In the heart of The Junction tonight, bassist/vocalist Marina Christopher brought The Art of Music back to the West Seattle Art Walk. (In our clip, she’s performing Warren Zevon‘s “Carmelita” with Andy Short.) The pop-up performances coordinated by John Redenbaugh returned to the WS Art Walk starting tonight, also featuring harpist Alyvia Miller at Welcome Road Winery in South Admiral. We have one more story to tell from tonight’s Art Walk, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. The Art Walk happens on the second Thursday, every month year-round, so the next one will be October 14th.
Tomorrow night, the last West Seattle Art Walk of summer offers live music as well as art displays. Above is this quarter’s list of participating venues, some with artists, some with food/drink specials for Art Walk visitors, some with both. Venues span the peninsula from Arbor Heights (Brace Point Pottery & Gallery, C.A. Pierce show and sale, 4208 SW 100th, 5-8 pm) to Admiral (West Seattle Grounds, Priyanka Parmanand painting live, 2141 California SW, 5-8 pm). Some venues are showing multiple artists’ work, like Fogue Gallery (WSB sponsor), 4130 California SW, open “until late” on Art Walk night, with a group show featuring guest artist Reeve Washburn (who also happens to be the WSAW’s coordinator). This month’s highlight is the return of live music to accompany your Art Walk wanderings. The Art of Music is happening in two locations – Welcome Road Winery, 3804 California SW, hosts harpist Alyvia Miller, and bassist/vocalist Marina Christopher is at KeyBank Plaza in The Junction, both performing 6-7:40 pm. September’s West Seattle Art Walk is coming up a week from Thursday – on September 9th – and it marks the return of “Art of Music”:
Many of you may remember the delight of live music paired with Second Thursday Art Walk in the last half of 2019. Art of Music brought family-friendly instrumental and vocal music to outdoor and indoor venues in the Alaska Junction, thanks to the passion and drive of project originator and coordinator John Redenbaugh.
We are thrilled to announce that, after the hiatus of 2020, John is bringing Art of Music back – and now to Admiral as well as the Alaska Junction! Mark your calendars for these Second Thursday West Seattle Art Walks:
September 9 • October 14 • November 11 • December 9
The September 9 event will feature award-winning bassist and jazz vocalist Marina Christopher at the KeyBank Plaza in Alaska Junction and harpist Alyvia Miller at the Welcome Road Winery in Admiral Junction. Venues for October, November and December are being finalized as we write. Verity Credit Union will host in October. Each venue will have two sets of music from 6pm to 7:40pm, with a 10 minute break in-between.

It’ll be a warm evening Thursday as the August West Seattle Art Walk takes center stage from Alki to Arbor Heights, starting at 5 pm.
Some venues have air conditioning, like Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW), open until 8 pm with the opening reception for Abstracts in the Key of Flamingo, participants in the Seattle Deconstructed Art Fair.
Also participating in the Deconstructed Art Fair, multidisciplinary artist Shima Star will be at Virago Gallery (4537 California SW) 5-9 pm on Art Walk night.
Nearby at 4525 California SW, Capers Home will be hosting West Seattle artist/photographer Chandra Sandoval, also 5 pm-8 pm.
Those are also the hours you can visit the southernmost stop on the August Art Walk, Brace Point Pottery (4208 SW 100th) in Arbor Heights, this month featuring paintings by Lynn Davis-Smith and Bruce Howard as well as the fabric and concrete constructions of Su Cummings.

As previewed last night, this quarter’s Art Walk poster artist, Jacquie Stock, is there tonight too. Fogue is one of The Junction’s newest businesses, and tonight it’s one of the liveliest.

Three big events ahead in the West Seattle Junction:
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: This one is not just in The Junction but also beyond, from Alki to Arbor Heights! Thursday, starting at 5 pm, it’s the next Second Thursday Art Walk. No closed streets again this year (usually this would be Summer Fest Eve), but lots of fun to be had. SIDEWALK SALE: Long before there was Summer Fest (which WILL return next year!), there was the midsummer Sidewalk Sale – and this year it’s back, Friday and Saturday (July 9-10) – more than two dozen businesses are participating (and we’re told there’ll be some pop-ups too). MAYORAL CANDIDATES’ FORUM: As previewed last night – Saturday at noon, WSB and the Junction Association are co-sponsoring the only pre-primary forum devoted entirely to West Seattle issues. We invited all 15 candidates to the forum at the Senior Center of West Seattle; nine have RSVP’d. Best way to watch is online, as we’ll be streaming to YouTube and social-media channels as well as here on WSB; limited in-person seating will be available for a few vaccinated spectators, first-come first-served (doors open at 11:30 and will close at 11:50).

She’s showing her quilts, which are on display all month long, plus having an 8 pm drawing for a free quilt and offering this game:
Participants will find a long table marked with blue tape outlining a 5×3 grid and a pile of 10” sewn quilt squares in various textures and colors and patterns. People will lay out the squares in their own designs, take a photo; voilà – an e-quilt! Then you’ll join the drawing for a real quilt on the same design, in the “WIN YOUR QUILT” drawing. (The winner will receive the very quilt they’ve designed, in 6-8 weeks.) A creative, fun time guaranteed.

Three nights until the next West Seattle Art Walk, which happens on second Thursdays every month, all year long. Art Walk organizers say more venues are hosting in-person artist receptions this time, so you have more places to explore. Those include Zelda Zonk in Admiral and Flying Apron in The Junction, both of which spotlighted “during business hours” displays during the pandemic but are now returning to welcoming visitors during Art Walk hours. Plus, Art Walk coordinator Reeve Washburn says, “We have an Art Walk ‘first’: Warren Pope, local 3-D artist, is doing an artist open house in the Fauntleroy neighborhood.” Along with visiting venues showing art, you can also stop by restaurants and bars supporting the Art Walk with food and drink specials – they’re listed in Thursday’s official preview , too! The Art Walk officially starts at 5 pm Thursday but as you’ll see in the preview, some events start earlier, some later. Wide variety of art, too – from painting to photography to quilting.

Another highlight of the week ahead: This month’s West Seattle Art Walk on Thursday night. And the early outlook is for a rainless night, so you might as well just go ahead and plan to check it out. While The Junction remains the heart of the Art Walk, other participating businesses cover the peninsula north to south – from Admiral to Arbor Heights. That’s the first West Seattle Art Walk map in a while, now that in-person artist receptions are starting to make a comeback! It’s a beautiful night for the peninsula’s second-Thursday Art Walk, and you still have time to get out and do some art viewing. Here’s this month’s preview – not just showing who’s having an event tonight, but also venues where you can see the featured artists’ work all month. And in some cases, both:
Naomi Amber Dawn is this month’s featured artist at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor). Her collection (read about it here) debuted at the shop tonight. They’ve closed for the evening now, but drop by tomorrow, or the day after, or any time in April.
Some other receptions continue all the way until 8 tonight – like Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor), showing the work of Jenna Roby (above) and pouring wine in its first Art Walk opening since last year. Or head to the southernmost Art Walk stop, Brace Point Pottery (4208 SW 100th), where Warren Pope‘s sculpture is featured. As previewed this morning, this year’s first West Seattle Art Walk is happening now! Above is one of the artists you can meet, Edimbo Lekea, the painter who founded Natty Dread Illustration to tell the “Untold TRUstory of the Afro-Diaspora.” You can meet him and see his art at Snip-Its (4506 California SW) until 8:30 tonight. Some other artists are having receptions elsewhere, while some have work you can enjoy online, and others are showing work you can enjoy at local businesses throughout the month – go here for the full lineup.
Tonight is the first second Thursday of the new year, and that means it’s West Seattle Art Walk night! The monthly Art Walk has continued during the pandemic as a mix of in-person and online showcases. Three highlights from this month’s preview:

That’s Brittany Philbin, who’s at West Seattle Grounds in North Admiral (2141 California SW) as part of tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. The photo she posed with is one you might remember seeing here on WSB back in October, when that pregnant Southern Resident orca – J46 Star – was part of a group that passed West Seattle. Brittany is a conservation advocate and health-care worker as well as a photographer; she’s at WSG tonight until 8 pm, one of several artists having indoor receptions this month. In The Junction, you can drop in on a few – among them, Erika Bell is at Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor) until 8 pm, and a group show is at Wild Rose’s (4529 California SW). Some businesses are just showing art during regular hours, but you can preview it all here – and for holiday shopping, remember that most artists are selling their work too.
All that glitters is … jewelry art! The annual Jewelry Invitational at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor) is part of what’s in the spotlight during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. Click! says the “Invitational features work from new artists Twyla Dill + Heather Kraft, new work from Jennifer Graves, and expanded collections from Ann Chikahisa and Adia Mei Jun Bobo.”
The shop is open until 7 tonight, but if you miss it, the jewelry will be featured all month and into December – some of it will be available for online shopping too. ‘Words, Writers, & SouthWest Stories,’ a historically based speaker series from the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, is excited to announce that it is hosting James Gregory for a live Zoom presentation on Thursday, October 8 at 6:00 PM. Gregory will deliver a presentation titled “The Seattle General Strike.”
