Jessica Creager understands that a lot of people are these days — for jobs, for money, or for food.
Her show “Craving,” featured during Thursday night’s West Seattle Art Walk and continuing on display at Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor), 4735 42nd Ave SW, is a response to that reality: her paintings are focused on the “little things in life that cause her to spontaneously smile,” like a pink-frosted cupcake or a pair of Swedish Fish. Some of the paintings themselves are tiny, too, and that’s intentional, to make them more affordable to people who are feeling an economic pinch.
In fact, Creager is one of those people, but she’s not a starving artist. Instead, she’s an artist who’s looking for a job in law.

Steve Peer shared the photo and explains they’re Holy Rosary 7th graders who’ve been going door to door seeking donated baked goods and distributing flyers for tomorrow night’s bake sale at The Kenney during the West Seattle Art Walk. Proceeds will go to Haiti quake relief. And there’s still time for you to help – you can bake something tomorrow (or, for our fellow night owls, tonight!) and drop it off at The Kenney (7125 Fauntleroy Way; map) right up until sale time (6-9 pm Thursday). This, by the way, fits in perfectly with something new that’ll be offered during tomorrow night’s Art Walk to get more people to The Kenney and other southern stops – Ron Sterling of Sterling Images Gallery, one such stop, at Lowman Beach, has rustled up a shuttle between The Junction and his side of town – read the full details about where and how to catch it, in this WSB Forums post.
Every second Thursday, year-round, 6-9 pm, you can wander West Seattle, enjoying (and if you choose, often, buying) the work of great local artists, during the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. This Thursday is the big night for February, and Lora Lewis from Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) tells us artist highlights are now up at wsartwalk.com – plus you can see, and print, the walking map (get it here). Something new this time around – Sterling Images Gallery is offering a shuttle from The Junction to “Art Walk South” stops, including their gallery at Lowman Beach, The Kenney, West Seattle Cellars, and Gail Ann Photography.

If you’re in High Point, there’s still time to get to the HP Neighborhood Association meeting – they’ve started with informal dinner, but the business meeting won’t start till 6:20-6:30, scheduled to continue till about 8 (even if you can’t get here till after 7, that’s when they’ll be surveying attendees about healthy food options in the area and what would interest them). HPNA is meeting in the new High Point Neighborhood Center where SW Morgan becomes Sylvan Way. That’s one of the events we’re covering tonight; we’re also dropping by a few stops on the West Seattle Art Walk, which started at 6 and continues till 9. SMOKE-FREE CITY PARKS? Smoking is one of the “behaviors” that would be banned in Seattle city parks under a new proposed Code of Conduct that’ll be discussed at tonight’s Parks Board meeting, 7 pm, Parks HQ downtown; a public hearing is scheduled for two weeks from tonight. Smoking is one of the “newly prohibited behaviors” proposed for the code; also “newly prohibited” would be (from the briefing paper):
• Conduct that deprives others of their use or enjoyment of a park or facility or disrupts parks business
• Possession of glass containers at athletic fields, beaches and children’s playgrounds
• Improper use of restrooms
• [as noted] Smoking
• Spitting
• Leaving packages, backpacks, luggage, or other personal items unattended
• Blocking entrances, exits, walkways, etc. that interferes with provision of services or use of park property
• Conduct that creates an unreasonable and substantial risk of harm to a person or property
• Entering restrooms designated for people of the opposite sex
• Use of flammable liquids
• Abusive or harassing behavior, including obscene language or gestures; assault or fighting
• Possession of fireworks, firecrackers, explosives, acid, or other articles or materials capable of causing serious harm to others
• Sexual misconduct

Next month’s Art Walk on December 10th is a special holiday Art Walk, and a chance to do late-night, not-so-last-minute shopping.
Tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk rocks at the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) with the Seattle premiere of “Double Down Live,” West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin‘s two-disc production of tour footage from the band — 1980 for one disc, 2008 for the other. Screening’s at 7 (with another one post-Art Walk at 10). And that’s just one of many stops on the map – get it here – which ranges all over West Seattle:
Not far from the Feedback, it’s Harvest Time at The Kenney – one of the spots on this month’s Art Walk collecting nonperishable food donations for the two food banks that serve West Seattle – art includes watercolors, jewelry and live piano/vocals – Brock Mason Photography will also be there offering professional-quality family portraits in front of a decorated holiday tree – and you can nosh on “autumn comfort foods” provided by the catering team from The Kenney.
Heading north, Emerald Spiral (5910 California SW) features Iris Muranaka’s work and acoustic music by Why Ask Why; C and P Coffee‘s Wine Club tasting event coincides with Art Walk night – 6-8 pm, the theme is Thanksgiving wine, with Christy Hemovich from Grape Expectations offering suggestions for holiday meals. On to The Junction, Twilight Artist Collective opens a new show tonight, surveying contemporary Northwest ironwork by members of the NW Blacksmith Association, curated by Lisa Geertsen and Andy Blakney of Firelight Forge, with an opening reception during Art Walk 6-9 pm.
Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor) also has an artists’ reception, opening a group show of “Puny Pictures”:
The show includes 23 artists with 162 pieces, says Wallflower’s Kelly Rae Cunningham, who’s among the artists. Wallflower is across 42nd from Jefferson Square.
Continuing north, there’s also a reception at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor), with artist Todd Martin, who explains: “The show: ‘Head Shots, if animals were celebrities,’ is based on the idea of what it would be like if the paparazzi chased animals instead of celebrities.” Hotwire is one of the locations collecting food-bank donations, along with nearby Ginomai, Alki Bathhouse, ActivSpace, The Kenney, Sterling Images, and Bird on a Wire Espresso. You wouldn’t know unless you were told that the art on the walls of Shoofly Pie Co. (4444 California SW) are by an eight-year-old. The linoleum block prints by Schmitz Park Elementary third-grader Romy Ehrsam are surprisingly accomplished. But once you meet Romy, you’re not as surprised — the artist is quite self-possessed.
“I’m being interviewed!” she says proudly to a friend walking by, and then strikes a perfect pose for a photo with her work.
The truth is, Romy’s already an old hand at this.
First of two reports from the September West Seattle Art Walk, which – unlike last month’s thundering, torrential-downpour night — was graced with clear skies: We walked into a full house at Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), where artists included Bayou and Kelly showing off their bag creations (online at Rat City Rags). Moving north to The Junction, the featured artist at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) was Gatewood’s Pam Mandel:
We know Pam best for her travel writing at Nerd’s Eye View, but she revealed she was creating art, including the collages she showed tonight, long before she wandered into technology and writing. More collage was on display at Twilight Artist Collective, where there’s always a party on Art Walk night – here’s work from Shaw Osha, part of Twilight’s featured The Ontology of the Image show, curated by Chris Crites:
And the night’s boldest show involved art that hadn’t even been created yet when tonight’s Art Walk began: Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) hosted the Paint Ball, giving four artists each a blank canvas and the mandate to transform it. We dropped in around two-thirds of the way through the evening:

Remember West Seattle Art Walk night last month? Thunder, lightning, downpours? Looks like tomorrow’s expected weather will be much more conducive to wandering. And the offerings keep getting more and more creative. Sampling from among the ranks of WSB sponsors who are participating, for example, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction is presenting The Paint Ball – billed as “Four artists, 120 minutes, public scrutiny, suffering” (more here). At Brunette Mix in The Junction, Gatewood artist/writer Pam Mandel (also known for Nerd’s Eye View) is showing collages. Ventana Construction, between Alaska and Morgan Junctions, is having an “artist blowout.” Back in The Junction, Wallflower Custom Framing will show the work of Kelly Rae Cunningham, whose creations adorn walls in Mural Apartments (where Wallflower’s in the ground-level-retail area). Across the street at Dream Dinners in Jefferson Square, Betty Olson Vacca‘s oils, pastels and watercolors. Other WSB sponsors participating: Click! Last night at Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction, during the August edition of the monthly West Seattle Art Walk, art literally happened inside and out – despite the thunder-and-lightning cloudbursts in the hour before WSAW kicked off. What you see above was created on the sidewalk outside Twilight – a surprise, its proprietors told us, by “traveling artist” friends Christopher and Erica, who dropped by. (Those are crabapples in the center of the piece.) Inside, DJ Joel was at the turntables for the promised dance party:

While Twilight’s home turf, The Junction, remains the epicenter of the ever-growing Art Walk, it’s now passed 50 venues, and the map reaches far and wide to all corners of the peninsula, like Fauntleroy:

The rain’s back – and thunder too – but tonight’s two big events are still on, and we wanted to remind you that BOTH are now indoors: West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm, with locations all over the peninsula (here’s the printable map) — including the Nature Consortium‘s art exhibit at Youngstown Arts Center, 4408 Delridge (map) – NC’s Lisa Corbin sent the photo at right and says, “This painting titled MLK was done by one of our teaching artists, Agazit Ocbazgi. HELEN SUTTON MEMORIAL: This afternoon at 2 pm, longtime West Seattle entrepreneur and community advocate Helen Sutton will be remembered and celebrated at the South Seattle Community College Arboretum, which she helped create. Here’s a map to the college; here’s a campus map showing where the Arboretum is located. Ms. Sutton was 95 when she died in June (here’s our original report); she was the longtime owner of La Grace in The Junction, and was the first woman president of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Everyone’s invited to the memorial.
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: More than 50 venues all over West Seattle welcome your visit 6-9 pm to enjoy art (and treats at many stops). Not only is it an opportunity to see the artwork, but it’s also an open-house atmosphere where you can visit local businesses you might not just drop into otherwise. Many of tonight’s participating artists are listed on the official West Seattle Art Walk site. One unique event on tonight’s docket is STOP! COLLABORATE! at Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction (west of Easy Street), promising a DJ’ed dance party as well as a show curated by local artist Todd Karam. Here’s how Twilight describes it:
This is one-of-a-kind opportunity where 16 artists from Washington and California collaborated with each other. Of course there’s a twist. Each participating artist contributed one of their own “completed” pieces. After drawing names from a hat, another artist from the group then took the once completed piece to expand on it. You ask “..but, but will they respect the work of the other artist? Is this normal?” The answer is, “who knows.”

SUMMER CONCERTS AT HIAWATHA, UPDATE – INDOORS TONIGHT! (this item updated at 9:34 am with new information) The fourth in the popular-from-night-one new, FREE concert series presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association is tonight at 6:30 at Hiawatha Community Center – and organizer Katy Walum says that because of the potentially showery weather, it WILL be held indoors at the Hiawatha gym. The jazzy Elizabeth Carpenter Trio headlines tonight; sample their music here.
