October’s West Seattle Art Walk: Driftwood, zombies, candy …

(First 6 photos in this story are by Ellen Cedergreen [Alki, ArtsWest, The Kenney])
Steps from the beach, Alki Bathhouse celebrated the exhibit “Beach Structures” last night during the October edition of the West Seattle Art Walk, 41 venues this time around, and we made it to eight of them last night. At the Bathhouse, David W. Simpson is the artist:

He’s also known for cyanotype prints (the image behind him is a print of the same structure), and he’s teaching a class in that medium at the Bathhouse Studio on October 30th, 10:30 am, call 206-684-7430 to register. Another of last night’s most unusual shows, WTF?! Guys and Dolls and Zombies at ArtsWest – here’s artist Kate Vrijmoet attacked by her zombie children tonight in front of her giant zombie paintings:

Two quick notes about spotlighted walking opportunities in the next two days:

Tomorrow night is the monthly West Seattle Art Walk, and since it’s the start of a new quarter, that means some new venues join the roster – the full list is on the walking map; you can also sample some of the participating artists by checking out the official West Seattle Art Walk website. Among the WSB sponsors who will be showing art tomorrow night are two with new locations – Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW in The Junction) and M3 Bodyworks (5236 California SW). Official Art Walk hours tomorrow (Thursday) night – in 41 venues from Alki Bathhouse in the north to Barton Street Lofts (WSB sponsor) in the south – are 6-9 pm.

On Friday afternoon, the Nature Consortium would love to have you join them on their monthly eco-hike (more like a walk – it’s not terribly challenging, so no worries if you’re not a full-fledged hiker) through the West Duwamish Greenbelt. 1 pm Friday, meet at 14th SW and SW Holly. It’s free but they ask that you RSVP – lisac@naturec.org.

West Seattle Art Walk: From Barton Street Lofts to The Junction

Outside Windermere Real Estate in The Junction, a young West Seattle Art Walk-goer pondered the sign. Much to see on a cool near-autumn night – not far away, Kristina Griffith painted on the sidewalk in front of the Junction boutique Carmilia’s:

Further south at ArtsWest (WSB sponsor), Eric Montoya was on hand to welcome visitors to the new show he’s part of (through October 2), Tenuous Truths, and across the street, Geoff Carter’s work – including Jessica Rabbit and Tinkerbell, here – graced the walls at knows perfume:

Then we ventured south to the biggest event of the night, more than a dozen artists showing at the Barton Street Lofts (WSB sponsor; here’s a map) – among them, Michelle Auer:

And James W. Sutherland:

Some of the Art Walk visitors mingled in the Barton Street Lofts courtyard, where you’ll find this water feature:

Next West Seattle Art Walk, October 14th, starts the fall quarter, and some participants rotate in and out each quarter, so watch for a new walking map when the date gets closer – as well as previews on the official Art Walk website (here) and Facebook page (here). Meantime, if you can’t wait that long for another artist reception – this Saturday night, Alena Hennessy will be on hand as her watercolor and ink works go on display at Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor), 5-8 pm in the Admiral District (next month, they move to The Junction).

Another big night at dozens of locations around West Seattle – 6-9 pm, it’s the West Seattle Art Walk (see the map here). And this time around, the Art Walk stretches even further southeast than it has before – Barton Street Lofts (WSB sponsors) have 13 artists on hand for a gala so exciting, they’ve been talking about it since before the last art walk! From metal robot sculptures to recycled-art dolls, the artists span many media – you can read about them on the official Art Walk website and on the Barton Street Lofts’ own website. Also among the WSB sponsors participating, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse features David Peacey‘s paintings (read about them here); ArtsWest – where “reasons to be pretty” just opened in the theater – is featuring the show “Tenuous Truths” (spotlighted here); also in The Junction, Bin 41 has West Seattle painter/sculptor Clayton Marsh, viticulturist Marco Ventrella from Graham Beck, and “Dining in Seattle: Past and Present” author Andrea Lott. WSB sponsors Cupcake Royale, Brunette Mix, and Click! Design That Fits (moving to The Junction soon!) are on the map too, along with the rest of the participant list (including The Building in Gatewood, featured here on Labor Day) – support your local businesses and go see them while enjoying art (and often treats, too) tonight! Here’s the map again.

West Seattle Art Walk this Thursday: Don’t miss ‘The Building’

This Thursday night, dozens of West Seattle venues from Alki to Westwood are open again for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Some of them are a bit off the proverbial beaten path – but well worth your time – like “The Building” in Gatewood.

Story and photos by Keri DeTore
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

“The Building” is a deceptively simple name, given the amount of creativity and art that comes out of this former day-care and school building at 4316 SW Othello (map) in Gatewood. The Building houses a dozen artist studios where the artists produce work from sculpture and oil painting to ceramics and custom guitar-making.

Owner Randy McCoy, who has developed other affordable artist studios in the Seattle area, recalls walking into the building back in 2000 when his daughter attended day care there: “I thought, ‘Man, this would make killer studios!’” The building has soundproof walls, plus a restroom and janitor’s sink on each floor — perfect for artists’ needs. Randy, a West Seattle resident who is an artist specializing in abstract painting and sculpture, recognizes the need for affordable spaces for artists to work; he bought the building in 2008. He says: “Other buildings get converted, but this will be art studios forever.” (The photo above shows Randy getting a drink from an original day-care water fountain.)

The Building is open to the public every second Thursday of the month for the West Seattle Art Walk, providing the community with the opportunity to visit with the artists who work in the studios and to see works of artists featured in the monthly rotating displays. In August, photos by David Blank adorned the walls of the ground floor gallery.

Shaun Doll, owner of Northwest Encaustic, which operates on the ground floor of The Building (photo above), is the curator of the rotating shows. If you’re an artist who would like to have work displayed at The Building, contact Shaun at: shaun@nwencaustic.com.

Touring through the building, you come to appreciate the spaces that have been provided for the artists who create here. They all have high ceilings and natural light, and the upper floors have amazing views of the sound. Oil painter Craig Kosak – shown above with his dog Tucker – paints in one of the upper floor studios. He notes: “Randy’s been a blessing for us all. He makes studios available for a good price.”

Among the painters and sculptors in The Building you also find David Myka, who builds custom guitars. Asked about the market for custom guitars, he notes that not only is this the busiest he’s been in 3-4 years, he’s got a year-long backlog and will be taking on an apprentice at the end of this year. He says: “People are investing in things that will last. In the depression, people started investing in hand-made furniture.” His clients include students in music conservatory and “Weekend Warrior” musicians.

While most of the studios are private, the ceramic studio is available to rent for day use and Shaun’s encaustic painting studio offers classes to the public as well as daily rentals. To learn more about the encaustic studio, visit: nwencaustic.com.

Further, studio space opportunities are coming up for ceramic artists in the Mutablefire Studio. Ceramicist Steve Knipp, pictured above with his kiln, says that they are reorganizing the studio to make room for two other artists. For more information, contact Steve at steve@knippart.com.

There’s a strong sense of community among the artists who work in The Building, including the occasional sharing of materials. Sculptor Shawn McLean, who has rented space here for two years notes that he’s used beeswax with the help of Shaun Doll, and David Myka has provided wood to use as sculpture bases. Randy McCoy adds: “There’s strength in numbers, we’re all supportive and we push each other. It’s really healthy to be around other artists.”

For the full list of participating venues in this Thursday night’s West Seattle Art Walk – and details on who’s showing what, where – check out the official site at wsartwalk.com; you can also find the official map by going here.

With 13 Seattle communities having regular art walks, including West Seattle, even devoted art lovers might have trouble keeping track. That’s why City Councilmember Nick Licata‘s office just launched a new website spotlighting them all – click the neighborhood name and you’ll get more information on its art walk. See the new site here. (The next West Seattle Art Walk, by the way, is just two weeks from tonight, on Sept. 9th.)

West Seattle Art Walk, August edition: 3 stops in The Junction

Her store opened on West Seattle Art Walk night 3 months ago, and tonight Christen Cottam hosted yet another artist at her store “knows perfume” in The Junction – Geoff Garza. Also in The Junction, South African artist Carina Booyens showed her work at Liberty Bell Printing:

Even the layout of treats at Liberty Bell was a work of art:

And another Junction stop – Bin 41, “your Junction wine shop” (WSB sponsor), where they were thrilled to host Washington winemaker Brian Carter tonight – he took a quick break from pouring, to pose with Bin 41 proprietors T. Frick and Jon McNamara:

Speaking of The Junction, two huge events are coming up within the next month-plus: On August 21, it’s the multi-store Big Bonanza sale, all day long (participants listed here), with not only deals, but fun, like a water-squirting showdown at high noon. Then September 19th is the third annual West Seattle Junction Car Show (co-sponsored by WSB) – the posters are hot off the presses at Liberty Bell, so you’ll be seeing them around soon. And mark your calendar for the next West Seattle Art Walk, second Thursday in September, 9/9 (if you want more info about any of the artists whose work you saw tonight, there are plenty of highlights on the official WSAW website).

Tonight, 6-9 pm, it’s the next West Seattle Art Walk, and the event really is all over the peninsula – ranging as far south as Westwood, where Bird on a Wire Espresso features birdfeeder art tonight. Heading northwest into Fauntleroy/Morgan Junction, there’s always a big Art Walk night party at The Kenney – tonight, three artists including fly-tying demonstrations! Plus bluegrass music and “light appetizers” by the in-house catering team. In The Junction, where the Art Walk began, you can enjoy the photography of Frank Spear in his exhibition “Used Parts” at Wallflower Custom Framing and Shooting Gallery (ground floor of Mural [WSB sponsor]). Also in The Junction, photography by Graham Clark is in the spotlight at Bin 41 (WSB sponsor) while Washington winemaker Brian Carter pours “hand-crafted European-style blends.” Heading to the northernmost point of the West Seattle Art Walk, you’ll find the photography and collage work of Chancy Grace at the Alki Bathhouse. Here’s the map of all 40-plus locations – which also include WSB sponsors Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, Cupcake Royale, and Brunette Mix in The Junction, Click! Design That Fits in Admiral, and West Side Yoga/Doga in Morgan Junction. Now that the sun’s out, seems like a surefire bet for a great night to wander, 6-9 pm.

Happening now: West Seattle Art Walk, Summer Fest eve & more

(Scroll down for updates as tonight’s Art Walk continues till 9 pm)

It’s officially West Seattle Summer Fest eve – streets are closed in The Junction as setup begins for the Friday-Saturday-Sunday festival. But it also enables extra fun for the Junction leg of the West Seattle Art Walk route tonight – with live performers in the street and in many of the venues. Here’s the list/map showing where you can go all over the peninsula. We’re covering it live – first official stop, though, is in Morgan Junction, where WSB sponsor West Side Yoga/Doga (NE corner of Fauntleroy/42nd) has art and live music:

The artist at WS Yoga/Doga is Emily Rieman from bestfriendphoto.com; they’re raising money tonight for Dogs Deserve Better. From Morgan Junction, we headed north to Admiral, where Art Walk night is opening night for The Cask (2350 California SW):

That’s The Cask proprietor Shon MacDughlas with some of what’s on hand at his “Old World ale/wine house.” (More in our preview from earlier this week.)

ADDED 7:07 PM: In The Junction – music! Here’s the band setting up outside West 5:

(added) And in action – the Yadda Yadda Blues Band!

Musicians already in action outside Twilight Artist Collective [video substituted later for originally published photo] – Musick Ward:

(There’s art inside too – here’s the preview, from the Art Walk website.) Outside Elliott Bay Brewery, Bubbleman was setting up – a Summer Fest eve fave:

At Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor), folks from West Seattle See Dogs are hanging out – with two of the guide-dogs-in-training – that’s Lucca in front, Mattie in back:

Also along California north of Oregon (which remains open as a through street, with California closed south of Oregon continuously to Edmunds, and closed for about a block north of Oregon) – you can get a jump on Summer Fest shopping, with JF Henry already in sidewalk-sale mode:

Next photos up will be from Bin 41, “your Junction wine shop” (WSB sponsor) – they’ve got music (including, in photo, a cappella singers Dave and the Dalmatians) AND guest winemakers.

Two doors south of Bin 41 is ArtsWest, which opens a new exhibition tonight, “Perennial Passages“:

The artists are there – from left, Susan K. Miller, Suze Woolf, Jacqui Beck, and Yuko Ishii. As with many of the exhibits/displays that are up for Art Walk night, theirs continues for the rest of the month (ending dates may vary, so always check with the venue, or just go and see what you see!). 8:41 PM UPDATE: Two more photos (and we have more for later, but we’re adding these before wandering back through the closed Junction streets) – the first buskers we spotted:

And Bubbleman, as he performed:

ADDED EARLY FRIDAY: A few more scenes – here’s video of Jeremy Serwer performing at TILA Real Estate:

Inside TILA, Northwest Hope and Healing was the beneficiary of an auction of glass floats from Shannon Felix‘s Avalon Glassworks:

Also in The Junction, Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) proprietor BJ prepared for her Summer Fest sidewalk sale, with some help:

Inside Brunette Mix, artist Akiko Masker:

Next Art Walk: August 12th. But as we mentioned, many of the venues display art inbetween Art Walks too – just take a look around next time you visit anyone on the list!

Tonight: West Seattle Art Walk; streets closed pre-Summer Fest

Though the 43 venues (list/map) participating in West Seattle Art Walk tonight (as well as the August and September editions) stretch far beyond The Junction (Alki to Endolyne, as the Art Walk poster/postcard puts it), the Summer Fest eve street closure in “Downtown West Seattle” plays an integral role. As mentioned here earlier this week, street performers – “buskers” – are invited to play in the shutdown streets; by late this afternoon, California will be closed from Edmunds to Oregon, and Alaska between 42nd and 44th, and they’ll remain closed until after the Summer Fest booths, stages, etc., are taken down Sunday night. (One of the headliners will be back – Bubbleman is expected outside Elliott Bay Brewery tonight.) The closed Junction streets are not the only reason this is usually the biggest West Seattle Art Walk of the year – the great weather usually brings everybody out, and tonight, it’s the perfect reason to get out of your probably-not-air-conditioned house (here’s the newest forecast). Many venues have beverages and snacks, free to Art Walk visitors, and tonight, with the theme “Art Walk Live!”, there’s lots of live music, not just in The Junction.

Many venues’ highlights are now posted on the official Art Walk website. Just a few – the grand opening for The Cask in Admiral (reported here Tuesday); Alki Bathhouse has a guitarist playing live (beach breezes!); WSB sponsor Bin 41 has tastings with popular Oregon winemakers Athena and Stewart Boedecker plus TWO live musical groups (details here) ; at newly returned WSB sponsor West Side Yoga/Doga in Morgan Junction, stop in for the Dogs Deserve Better benefit featuring artist Emily Rieman and “live surf music”! Other WSB sponsors participating in tonight’s Art Walk are Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (artist info here), Brunette Mix (artist info here), Cupcake Royale, 8 Limbs Yoga (artist info here) – all in The Junction – and Click! Design That Fits in Admiral (artist info here). Again, you can browse artist info for many of the venues on the official Art Walk website; here’s the venue list and walking map. Stay cool, spend tonight at the Art Walk! We’ll see you there – and we’ll be reporting “live” here and via Twitter – 6-9 pm tonight.

West Seattle Art Walk Thursday: The Cask opening; buskers wanted

Before we get to West Seattle Summer Fest this Friday-Saturday-Sunday, there’s one more Big Event – the next West Seattle Art Walk on Thursday night, “from Alki to Endolyne,” as the official postcard art proclaims – 43 venues (here’s the list/map). We mentioned one venue’s big plans last week. Today, two more highlights – First, as noted on the official Art Walk website, The Cask in Admiral plans its grand opening that night. (We brought you first word of this “Old World ale and wine house,” 2350 California SW, in this story last April.) (added 1:15 pm – we just dropped by The Cask and got these indoor/outdoor pix)

(back to original 11:02 am story) Second, for the venues in The Junction, the streets will already be closed for Summer Fest, and the theme is “Art Walk ‘Alive'” – with street performers (“buskers”) welcome to be part of it – Art Walk organizer Lora Lewis from Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) has even put out a citywide call. So if you know a busker, let them know they’re welcome to be in The Junction this Thursday night, 6-9 pm – as is everybody – we know the weather will be summery, the art will be awesome, so here’s another look at the map (again, not just The Junction, there are venues all over the peninsula) – as well as venue highlights on the WSAW site (many offer free refreshments too). See you there (and of course, at West Seattle Summer Fest the following three days).

1 week till pre-Summer Fest Art Walk: Practice ‘Minute to Win It’

One week from tonight, it’s the biggest West Seattle Art Walk of the year – the night before West Seattle Summer Fest, which means that when you visit the venues in The Junction, the streets already will be shut down for the three-day street festival. At right is Anné Burke of TILA Real Estate, which is presenting a $10,000 “West Seattle Minute to Win It” contest during Summer Fest, with a chance to practice on Art Walk night – the game includes balancing 3 golf balls (which Anné is demonstrating in the photo), “ping-tac-toe,” and bobble-head, plus, she says, “the final game of a dice roll to spell out T-I-L-A.” You can practice during West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm next Thursday (July 8th) at TILA offices, 4727 44th SW. P.S. The $10,000 prize competition is for 18+ only. (Watch the Art Walk website for more info soon on what else you’ll find – around the peninsula, not just in The Junction – next Thursday night.) P.S. Besides game practice, TILA has some other Art Walk highlights planned, including music, a magician, wine and chocolate, and 12 glass pieces donated by Avalon Glassworks, to be auctioned as a fundraiser for Northwest Hope and Healing.

The monthly West Seattle Art Walk is more than a night for admiring art. At Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in North Delridge last night, it was also an occasion for borrowing it, as the Art Lending Library opened for the night. It’s been a year since the ALL made its debut – in this June 2009 story, artist Seth Damm explained it on video, and last night he was busy explaining it to prospective borrowers:

The Art Walk is also often a night for music. At wine shop Bin 41 (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, along with watercolors by Lee Copeland, we found Red Dog:

They played Appalachian music, while the Bin 41 team poured wine from South Africa:

Also in The Junction, another WSB sponsor, Mural Apartments, also featured live music – here’s video of the Velveteen Lotharios:

(Video by Patrick Sand)
In keeping with the building’s name, Mural’s lobby is meant as gallery space – you can even see art through the windows as you walk by on 42nd SW. Heading back west through The Junction, at CAPERS, featured artist Jennifer Ament has chosen to help wildlife through her imagery of it:

CAPERS’ Lisa Myers explains that Jennifer “is donating 20% of her art sales to the National Wildlife Federation for sealife rescue in the Gulf [of Mexico] through June 24th. … She has just released a heron, nautilus, sea fan and whale as part of her growing collection of linoleum cut prints.”

Tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk is only half over – you’ve still got lots of time to go visit at least a few venues (here’s the printable map). At Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in the Admiral District, for one, new paintings are in from featured artist Rachel Austin, like the one shown above – which, if you look very closely, actually incorporates an Alki Point map! It’s a cozy 5″ x 5″. There’s music, food and more, from Alki to Delridge to Fauntleroy and many points inbetween. Here’s our earlier preview; wsartwalk.com has even more highlights. We’ll have more photos to share later tonight.

That’s the new promotional video for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk – and tonight’s the June edition, 6-9 pm, dozens of venues all over our peninsula (here’s the printable map). Baked goods figure prominently in tonight’s plan – new Heavenly Pastry in the Admiral District makes its Art Walk debut, and Baked in Seattle marks its “grand opening” in part of the Blue Willow space in The Junction … Or if you want something to wash down the baked treats, Bin 41 wine shop (WSB sponsor) is having a wine tasting for those who stop in during Art Walk – live music too. And at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, the Art Lending Library is open tonight – a rare occasion! Check wsartwalk.com for Art Walk venue previews. Also tonight, the 1st official meeting of the new Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council, 7 pm at West Side Presbyterian Church (more here) … The city Parks Board will hear a briefing, with time for public comment, on the possibility that King County might seek to place a Combined Sewer Overflow-reduction facility at Lowman Beach Park – the briefing paper’s here; the meeting’s at 7 pm at Woodland Park Zoo, in the Activity Center near the west entrance … More, on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar page.

West Seattle Art Walk, including opening night for knows perfume

The Junction’s newest store, knows perfume (originally previewed here in February), opened its doors tonight for the first time – just in time for the May edition of the West Seattle Art Walk. That’s proprietor Christen Cottam, beaming in her brand-new space at 4536 California SW. Also seen along the Art Walk path tonight:

That scene was from about a block away at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor; 4306 SW Oregon): Jessica Dolens had a multimedia presentation in the corner – film on the back wall, art on the screen in the salon. Elsewhere in The Junction:

From left, at Twilight Artist Collective (4306 SW Alaska), that’s Eva Funderburgh, Justin Hillgrove, and Mike Capp – Eva created the art they’re standing next to.

Next West Seattle Art Walk is the second Thursday, as always – June 10th, 6-9 pm – watch wsartwalk.com for updates, as well as the WS Art Walk page on Facebook.

Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction is putting out the call for local artists to send in art to use on posters, flyers, etc., in future quarters. If you’re chosen, your work will be seen on more than 2,000 pieces of promotional material – not to mention myriad places online. The Body Bar on the north end of The Junction was the most sizzling venue during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – because it was all about bacon. At right, with her muse, that’s artist KathyJ, who can be best appreciated through her website what do bacon do?see it here. Next, Max Humphres was at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) with his mirror art:

And if you had wandered into Mural (WSB sponsor), you would have heard the sounds of guitarist/singer Rod Moody mingled with cheery conversation:

His performance was presented by Mural’s future sister building, Link, under construction in The Triangle. These were three of the 41 venues on tonight’s list; next West Seattle Art Walk is Thursday, May 13th.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: The spring lineup for the West Seattle Art Walk makes its debut tonight – more than 40 venues around West Seattle. In addition to what we mentioned in our Tuesday preview, you can mix art and wine, with photographers showing at both the newly opened Bin 41 and at West Seattle Cellars (tastings at both shops). There’s student art at The Kenney, hand-screened poster art at Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor), and a free photo for your Facebook profile if you visit Gail Ann Photography in Fauntleroy. The Art Walk runs 6-9 pm; venues are listed (with many more previews, including samples of the artists’ work!) at wsartwalk.com.

OPEN HOUSE AT M3 BODYWORKS: While you’re out for Art Walk, you can also stop by the Open House and meet the massage therapists of longtime WSB sponsor M3 Bodyworks. The M3 Open House also includes art, in keeping with the night’s theme – paintings by Desirae Hester. M3 is at 5410 California SW (upstairs), and welcomes you to stop by between 6-9 pm (open house details are here; also note, M3 has a coupon on the WSB Coupons page).

PARKS BOARD: The meeting’s downtown as usual, but we track the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners because there’s so much Seattle Parks property in West Seattle. Last meeting included a dire budget briefing (WSB coverage here), but there’s no formal budget update on tonight’s agenda – scheduled items include a briefing on park/open space acquisition and an update on encroachment on Parks land. 7 pm at Denny Park.

WEATHER NOTE: As mentioned last night, there’s an ongoing chance of some “wet snow” in showers tonight/tomorrow (Scott C, who commutes north, tells us he encountered some “leaving West Seattle” this morning). We’ll keep close watch on the forecast updates at midday, midafternoon and midevening.

Only got the chance to drop by one West Seattle Art Walk venue tonight, in part because we were driving around for quite a while trying to sort out the low-bridge woes (all over now). But The Junction’s own Twilight Artist Collective is always a sure bet on the big night (not to mention other times) – in our photo, artists Michelle Anderst and Chris Sheridan, two of the 10 artists whose work is in Twilight’s new show “10 and Change,” curated by Kate Protage (read more about it here). You can see the show at Twilight (Easy Street Records‘ western neighbor) through April 5th; next West Seattle Art Walk will be April 8.
