rswsParticipantWe just found out that our son will be losing his first grade class, and the students will be reassigned among the other 4 classrooms. This is the absolute last straw with SPS…just as the kids get adjusted, after a significant delay in starting, their horrible planning strikes again! Class sizes will jump up to almost 30 and a teacher will lose a job. Furious…

BonnieParticipantYes, this happens occasionally. So sorry that this happened to your class. Last year Gatewood had to basically *buy* their teacher back. Sad that it comes to that.

WSBKeymasterI’m working on this story today – half a dozen parents so far have forwarded the Schmitz Park note, sent relatively late last night. And there’s indirect word of at least one other West Seattle school. The district says, so far, that it doesn’t have a full list to share, so I’ll be reliant on other sources – anyone with info can contact us at editor@wsb.blackfin.biz – thanks.

HuindekmiParticipantThe Oct 1st counts are in and that’s what the state uses to fund the district. If a school is below the count that they expected, their budget gets cut and they have to consolidate.
The same thing is happening at Alki. We just heard last night that they were told to drop 1 gen ed staff and .5 arts/PE/whatever staff.

JanSParticipantthis happens every year…

rswsParticipantAnd now I know that it is much more than just Schmitz. I am surprised by the sense of resignation…I have always put a high value on education and this never happened to me as a child. What’s happening here is not normal and needs to change.
