clayealsParticipantFor the public record, I wish to state that contrary to a TV ad that apparently is using a photo of me without my permission, I have not endorsed Phil Tavel candidate for Seattle City Council District 1. Below is a clarifying statement issued by Tavel:
Independent Expenditure Distracting Voters
I was notified this past Friday morning by West Seattle resident Clay Eals, former executive director of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, that a photo of him and me was used in a TV ad that supports my candidacy and that aired on television last week.
Clay contacted me because he was concerned that the use of the photo incorrectly implies an endorsement of my District 1 City Council campaign, and so am I. “I have strictly stayed away from endorsing any candidates for public office because of my longtime association with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, which, as a nonprofit organization cannot endorse candidates for public office,” says Clay.
This was in no way an endorsement by Clay of either me or my campaign. The photo was taken after Clay made a presentation on May 15, 2019, to the Rotary Club of West Seattle about “Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred,” a recent book by Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard for which Clay served as an editor. I posted the photo to my campaign Facebook page and it appeared with a caption that was approved by Clay.
I myself did not use the photo in a TV ad for my campaign. A Political Action Committee supporting my campaign apparently pulled the photo from my campaign’s Facebook page and used it in a TV ad that aired last week. I have no control over such ads, as these things are done independently from the campaign. I want to make sure that anybody who sees the ad knows that it was not an endorsement by Clay.

clayealsParticipantI just heard from Markham McIntyre — executive director of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce’s political action committee, Civic Alliance for a Sound Economy (CASE) — that he has removed the photo of me from the Phil Tavel TV ad. For this much I am grateful. –Clay
