Another youth sports league is signing up players for 2024. This time it’s Southwest Little League. Rob emailed us to say that SWLL “is now open for baseball, softball and Challenger programs, ages 4-14.” Here’s the link. Rob notes that SWLL is one of the local youth sports leagues that has a geographic jurisdiction, including “a large portion of West Seattle including High Point, Highland Park, Arbor Heights, and South Delridge, in addition to White Center, South Park, and Highline.” Registration is open until February, so you have time to decide; the season starts in March.

It wasn’t all fireworks

The fireworks some set off after the Seahawks‘ Monday Night Football victory over Philadelphia (20-17) less than half an hour ago spawned some “possible gunfire” calls to 911. However, in one case, it was actual gunfire. Dispatch sent officers to a home in the Westwood area where a resident reported a bullet piercing a wall; police have reported back to dispatch that it was “confirmed bullet damage.”

VIDEO: Perfect night for West Seattle Runner’s 2023 Christmas Light Run

No rain, no snow, no sub-freezing temperatures – perfect weather as the group above headed out on the annual Christmas Light Run coordinated by West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor):

WSR proprietors Lori and Tim McConnell mapped the run along a route they said would take runners past everything from a yard with more than a dozen inflatable Santas to the Gai Family‘s Madonna.

The shop offers multiple free events every month, including group runs every week. (Last one of the year will be an early New Year’s celebration, 8 am Saturday, December 30th, with champagne and sparkling cider toasts afterward.) In the New Year, WSR also will start another free Get Fit “couch to half-marathon” training series, beginning with an info night at 6:30 pm January 3rd – email lori@westseattlerunner.com with questions.

SPORTS: New soccer club West Seattle Junction FC to debut next year. Here’s one simple way to assist

Love soccer? Get ready to support the newly formed West Seattle Junction FC. Here’s the announcement about the team, which starts play next spring, but needs a show of community support right now:

West Seattle Junction FC, a pre-pro U-23 soccer club, is forming in our community and will debut in a series of 14 home/away matches and friendlies starting in mid-May 2024. Formed by a team of soccer enthusiasts that have supported our youth soccer community for over 25 years, this venture will bring a much needed platform for our most talented athletes to showcase their skills. The Club’s men’s team is planned for 2024 and the women’s team in 2025, competing in the USL W league.

The club aims to foster a strong connection to a hyper-local fanbase and create a memorable experience for fans, players, and everyone involved. They also intend to have a positive impact both on and off the field. Ticket sales will begin in early February with their schedule announcements and will be priced between $13.00 – $15.00 per ticket with a block of tickets set aside at no cost to provide accessibility to the entire fan base.

The team has already begun preparations for the upcoming season and will announce early January tryouts at Delridge Playfield within the next week through their social media pages. The coaching staff is currently being assembled, and they promise to bring a wealth of experience and expertise, ensuring that West Seattle Junction FC is well-prepared for the challenges and triumphs of USL2 competition. Competitors will include Ballard FC, the 2023 National Champions, OlyTown FC, PDX FC, and many more Northwest Division teams.

West Seattle Junction FC invites the community to join them on this exciting journey. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements, events, and opportunities to get involved. Follow the team on social media for the latest updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses as they prepare to make their mark in USL2.

Special note: Formation is not without its challenges. Their desired home field, Southwest Athletic Complex, a perfect location to host the West Seattle community and a soccer match, requires an application process through Parks and SPS.

Questions and concerns related to the Club’s use of the field persist and they have been unable to properly secure the 7 field reservations needed to host their home matches. The club would greatly appreciate a community show of support by providing written support in the Blog comments and/or an email that can be forwarded by the Club to the parties reviewing their application with your vote of support. Highline Soccer Association and its board members have all rendered full letters of support to the decision makers and now it’s time for the community to weigh in.

Email address is info@junctionfc.org – website (as linked above) is junctionfc.org.

West Seattle Little League Spring 2024 registration is now open for all youth ages 4-14.

Each year, we want to make sure all kids have the opportunity to write the next chapter in the Little League story, regardless of their situation. Little League and T-Mobile share the belief that every kid should have the chance to play ball.

The WSLL baseball and softball spring season will run from March – June and features fun activities like the jamboree, sandlot days, and end-of-the-year bash. Interested to know more details? Check out westseattlelittleleague.com to find information about boundaries and divisions of play.

We look forward to seeing you on the field!

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle schools | WS & Sports

High-school basketball season has just begun. But no game tonight for the West Seattle High School boys’ team – they’re at Easy Street Records (4559 California SW) for the Slam Dunk Social benefit event. It’s on until 9 pm with food, fun, and a silent auction. Meet the coaches, too:

From left in our photo are Rick Ticeson, Jeff Auter, head coach Dan Kriley, Jeff Dabbs, and Nick Crespinel. Supporters raise money for expenses that the basic sports budgets just don’t cover – and that’s what tonight’s event is all about. A silent auction is part of it too, including a highlight item – a Pearl Jam Christmas record autographed by Eddie Vedder! Meantime, the boys are 1-1 on the season so far – next game Tuesday night, varsity at 7:30 pm, at home vs. Garfield.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Kids’ basketball contest in West Seattle on Saturday

So many holiday events in West Seattle this weekend – but a few non-holiday events too! Like this one for kids:

It’s happening 9 am-noon Saturday (December 2) in the gym at Lafayette Elementary (2645 California SW). The Burien Elks – whose wide service area includes West Seattle – will be holding a “hoop shoot” contest. The Elks’ Missy Wheat says it’s part of a national competition for kids 8 through 13. The top scorers on Saturday will move on to district competition, followed by state and nationals. There’s a chance to win scholarships through the Elks National Foundation. No preregistration required – just show up Saturday morning! If you have questions, squareknot85@gmail.com is how to reach local tournament director Mark Komac.

WEST SEATTLE SCHOOLS: Highland Park Elementary PE program scores gift from Storm

(WSB photo)

What a team! From left are Seattle Storm entertainment emcee Shellie Hart, forwqrd Jordan Horston, and mascot Doppler, with Seattle Public Schools superintendent Dr. Brent Jones, during a visit this afternoon to Highland Park Elementary. There, in partnership with WaFd Bank, the Storm donated $5,000 to HPES’s PE program, led by educator Chellie LaFayette. In Q&A, player Horston – named this year to the WNBA’s All-Rookie Team – was asked why she felt it’s important for kids to work out; she replied that not only do you feel good about exercising, it’s a good way to release energy and aggression you might feel. She played just about “every sport” possible as a kid, and currently, besides basketball, also runs, does yoga, and hikes. And she stressed that academic achievement is important even if you want a future in sports – for college, for example, a good academic record can vault you over other contenders for a spot in a program. The Storm visitors also told the students they were all invited to come see a Storm game next spring.

THANKSGIVING SCENE: West Seattle Runner’s Gobble Gobble Group Run (and food drive)

Another West Seattle Thanksgiving tradition started the day on Alki – Tim McConnell of West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) sent the report and photos from this year’s Gobble Gobble Group Run:

Had a great turnout of runners and walkers for this morning’s blustery group run. They brought around 25 pounds of food to donate for the West Seattle Food Bank and then headed down Alki for a few miles.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Lori and I would like to say thank you to everyone who supports West Seattle Runner; we are so lucky to have such a great group of runners/walkers who value what small business does for the community.

VOLLEYBALL: West Seattle High School’s stellar season ends at state tournament

The season that took the West Seattle High School volleyball team all the way to the state tournament ended there tonight. The Wildcats lost two matches, one in the morning against Shorewood High School (3-0) and one in the evening against Peninsula High School (3-2). The scoreboard shows the last one was a heartbreaker – first WSHS was down 2-0, then took the next two sets to tie at 2-2, but lost the fifth and final set by the barest of margins. Head coach Scott Behrbaum‘s team took second place in the Metro League and third in the district tournament on the way to the state 3A championships in Yakima.

READER REPORT: Delridge Skatepark safety alert

Received from Joel:

Just wanted to let West Seattleites know that a disgruntled neighbor threw garbage, including glass bottles, into the Delridge skatepark this evening. He was upset about the refuse being left behind on a daily basis.

I cleaned up what glass I could, and notified the police, but I’m sure there are small shards left that could hurt someone if they were to fall.

We suggested also calling the Seattle Parks after-hours maintenance number (206-684-7250).

CONGRATULATIONS! More local volleyball success

Thanks to “Coach Steve” Fredrickson for the report and photos:

Congratulations to the Delridge “Da Pickles,” who won 1st place in Saturday’s City Wide Volleyball Jamboree 12-13 age group, and the Delridge “Devils,” who won 2nd place in the 10-11 group … making this coach extremely proud!!

The Jamboree was held at Rainier Community Center and was a double-elimination tourney where each team played just one set – very similar to pre-pandemic Jamborees.

The 12-13 team finished first in the league with a 4-1 record – the one loss was due to a forfeit because of Club tryouts. At the Jamboree they beat Ravenna and Loyal Heights, then again played Ravenna in the championship match…losing their only set but then won the second to bring home the Gold.

The 10-11 team finished third in the league with a 3-2 record. At the Jamboree they started off with a tough loss to Green Lake but then rallied back to beat Ballard and Green Lake in the losers bracket, only to fall to High Point in the Final, bringing home the Silver.

West Seattle was definitely well represented with Delridge and High Point taking three of the four medal awards!

CONGRATULATIONS! Two girls from West Seattle are state-champion swimmers

Congratulations to two West Seattle-residing Kennedy Catholic High School students who have just won state 4A swimming championships! The report is from Casie:

West Seattle residents Kaitlyn Vu (top left) and Lucy LaBella (bottom right) are state champions! Sophomore Kaitlyn and freshman Lucy won the 4×100 Free relay for Kennedy Catholic High School at the WIAA 4A state championship this weekend. Kaitlyn was also the 100 Breaststroke state champion. Kennedy placed third as a team.

Full results from the championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way are here.

CONGRATULATIONS! West Seattle High School volleyball team off to state after finishing district tournament

That’s the West Seattle High School volleyball team, photographed today in the gym at Lake Washington High School, where they finished district-tournament play, starting with a 3-0 loss to the host team in the semifinals this morning, coming back with a 3-0 victory over Renton’s Liberty High School this afternoon. That won them third place in the district, following their second-place Metro League finish, and next they’re off to the state tournament. That’s happening in Yakima next Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats, under head coach Scott Behrbaum, are 16-6 on the year so far.

SPORTS: West Seattle High School’s volleyball victory at district tournament means trip to state

9:49 PM: Five nights after taking second place in the Metro League championships, the West Seattle High School volleyball team scored a shutout win in their first district-tournament match tonight. Playing at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, the Wildcats beat Bellevue 3-0. Lake Washington is also where WSHS will face the host team at 9 am Saturday (November 11th) in the district semifinals. If we’re reading the bracket correctly, tonight’s victory has already guaranteed them a berth at the state tournament.

9:58 PM: Head coach Scott Behrbaum confirms his team has earned a trip to state – that’ll be November 17-18 in Yakima.

Last night’s Metro League volleyball championship match was closer than the final score – Seattle Prep over West Seattle High School, three sets to none – would suggest.

During the faceoff in the Chief Sealth IHS gym, the first two sets’ scores were close – 25-23 and 26-24.

The third set was almost seesaw until a 10-10 tie – and Prep started pulling away after that, taking the set 25-16.

Next up for the Wildcats and head coach Scott Behrbaum, a district-tournament game at 7:30 pm Thursday (November 9) vs. either Bellevue HS or Eastside Catholic (who they beat 3-0 earlier on Saturday to get to the Metro final). They’ll be playing at Lake Washington High School (12033 NE 80th, [corrected] Kirkland).

A strong season for West Seattle High School ended tonight in Tacoma. WSHS played a postseason game at Mount Tahoma High School, with a state-tournament berth at stake, but lost 53-14. Head coach Anthony Stordahl‘s team finished the year 6-3.

SPORTS: West Seattle HS volleyball team plays for league championship tonight

We mentioned in today’s preview list that West Seattle High School would play Eastside Catholic in the Metro League volleyball semifinals this morning. The Wildcats won the match, 3-0, and that means they will play for the league championship tonight – 7:15 pm in the Chief Sealth IHS gym (2600 SW Thistle). If you want to go cheer them on, ticket info is here.
