“Strange doorknocker” story turns up on TV

blogontv.jpgThanks to Margaret for sending that shot of her TV screen showing WSB while the reporter credited this site for the original “strange doorknocker” story (first report here, second one here) — which channel 7 decided to follow up on tonight. Actually, credit goes to Larry Carpenter (Alki Community Councll, Log House Museum, and West Seattle Community Recognition Award winner) for the original report – he told us a couple hours ago that channel 7 had interviewed him; we missed the newscast but after Margaret’s screen-shot came in, we found this text version (no video so far) online. WSB is described in the online writeup only as “a West Seattle blog,” but 7 still deserves props for crediting the source — last week another station we won’t name lifted our coyote photos without permission or credit (we saw it and called, and they fixed it for a later run; this website’s contents are copyrighted so permission is required to republish our photos). 9:51 AM UPDATE: Re: the door-knocker story, KIRO updated the web version this morning (without us even having to ask) and it now credits us properly (with a link too). Thanks!

Welcoming our newest sponsor: M3 Bodyworks Massage Clinic

secondm3.jpg

(M3 Bodyworks staff: Clockwise from lower right, owner Michael Mandell, LMP; Gary Rhodes, LMP; Stephanie Ross, LMP; Josie Ives, LMP; Courtney Good, office assistant; M’Lissa Hayes. Not pictured: Jen Barth, LMP; Damon Vecci, LMP)
That’s the staff of M3 Bodyworks Massage Clinic, which became WSB’s newest sponsor this week. Here’s what M3 wants you to know about the business (read through to the special offer!): “M3 Bodyworks Massage Clinic is a massage boutique with multiple therapists, 3 treatment rooms and 400 square feet of wall space for local artists to display their work. M3 Bodyworks is located at 5410 California Ave SW, Suite 203, diagonally across from the West Seattle Nursery. The owner, Michael Mandell, has lived in Seattle since 1996 and survived through 3 failed internet startups during the high-tech boom. After the third startup, Michael went to massage school and took his career into his own hands. Michael has created a space where massage for the whole body is important to the healing process. M3 Bodyworks Massage Clinic’s philosophy is to provide massage for all at an affordable price with quality therapists. We promise an hour paid for a massage is a hour on the table. Prices are as low as $56.00 per hour through pre-paid packages. All therapists share clients, which make it easy for you to get comprehensive care. Michael brings his high-tech experience with him to the massage clinic with online scheduling, account review, e-mail receipts, therapist bios online and web-only specials. This allows all the therapists more time to spend with the individual clients. M3 Bodyworks has also joined organizations like AHAC (www.ahacseattle.org) to provide affordable massage to the homeless and people in need or in crisis where alternative healthcare is needed. M3 Bodyworks Massage Clinic has monthly specials and accepts most Health Insurance, car-accident insurance (PIP), on-the-job-injury insurance (L&I) and credit cards/cash/checks. Since you have taken the time to read our introduction, new clients can introduce themselves to us with $20 off any service when you mention West Seattle Blog.” Thanks to M3 Bodyworks for sponsoring WSB — and thanks to our other sponsors, all of whom you will find on this page, which also has info for anybody interested in joining them to grow their business and reach more customers while helping WSB be a sustainable source of 24/7 community news, information, and discussion for West Seattle.

Locksmith fundraiser: Forum Community members meet the media

komocrewandforum.jpg

Look for coverage from all four TV stations and the P-I – that’s who came to the arson-gutted Puget Sound Key and Lock site in Morgan Junction this morning for an interview availability with owner Michael Dein, updating what’s been happening with him and his business since last month’s still-unsolved firebombing, and looking ahead to Saturday night’s Admiral Pub fundraiser/raffle, organized by WSB Forum Community members. The Forum Community also organized this morning’s interview opportunity and was represented on-site by JoB and Kathy, seen in the second photo above, talking with the KOMO 4 News crew. Full WSB story, with video, to come in a separate post. 1:29 PM UPDATE: Here’s a link to the first TV story to appear online, the noon coverage from KING5’s Roberta Romero. 5:37 PM UPDATE: Here’s the P-I story.

THE GROUCHOS OF NORTHERN PIGEON POINT: Have been meaning to share West Seattle writer Mark Bourne‘s Grouchos writeup on Film.com, for anyone who didn’t catch it when it was aggregated on our More page.

WATER AND WALKING: Chas Redmond happened onto this city page re: the Westcrest Park reservoir’s history. He was doing research for this project; another public workshop’s coming up in South Seattle on April 30. Another project he’s involved in, West Seattle Walking Trails (originally reported here), is progressing — a grant application to fund some of the wayfinding kiosks has made it to the next stage of a process that has several more months to go; meantime, tomorrow he and Feet First reps will brief the Seattle Design Commission (agenda here) on the entire project.

WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE DAY UPDATE: 40+ sales signed up so far for the 4th annual version of the big all-over-West-Seattle selling and shopping day May 10th, from individual sales to school/block sales — if you don’t want to register a sale because you’d have only have a few things to sell, there’s a location offering you space – get the latest WSCGSD info (including of course how to register) by going here (we’re updating that site, westseattlegaragesale.com, daily; if you have any questions before or after registering, please e-mail garagesale@wsb.blackfin.biz).

Welcoming a new WSB sponsor: 4415 SW Stevens, for sale

Tonight, the traditional WSB welcome to another new sponsor – this time, it’s 4415 SW Stevens (map), greerbergehouse.jpga home that’s up for sale, with an open house 2-4 pm Sunday. The photo’s at left; here’s what its owners want you to know: “The house is a 1929 Tudor, located about a block west of the Admiral PCC. There are quite a few similar looking houses in West Seattle of approximately the same age, but what distinguishes this one is that it has been beautifully restored & completely updated. Our new ad in WSB references that we had the house earthquake-retrofitted, one of several things that make the house safer than many houses of its vintage. The house has new electrical wiring; all knob-and-tube wiring was removed or decommissioned & vintage light fixtures were rewired or are new. The plumbing is updated including new water lines. There is a new gas furnace & updated ductwork. The lower level is fully finished. In other words, this house has no creepy old wiring, plumbing or basement! On the aesthetic side, the house has many beautiful period details; mahogany woodwork, original glass doorknobs, fireplace tile, & hardwood floors have all been refurbished. A primary goal of our remodel was to restore and preserve Old World Charm. We replaced old aluminum windows in the living & dining rooms with period leaded glass windows including a beautiful antique transom window with hand-cut bevels. The house has beautiful tile work & many other charming details. The exterior of the house had yellow aluminum siding for many years. We had it removed & discovered the original cedar siding underneath. We had a master carpenter recreate the traditional doorway arch with hand-cut custom molding. The yard is beautifully landscaped thanks to the previous owner; we have been amazed at the variety of beautiful flowers & plants. We hope that people will stop in at one of our open houses! It’s a beautiful home in a great neighborhood. We’ve enjoyed the convenience of being able to walk to nearby shops, parks & schools.” Here’s the website the owners set up to share more info about their home and open houses, including the one this Sunday, 2-4 pm.

Just this week, we added a new area to the WSB Forums, for West Seattle-based businesses who are hiring. By request, we have retitled that section West Seattle Jobs Offered and added a West Seattle Jobs Wanted section (where we have moved 2 jobseekers who turned up in the original area). Please follow the rules posted on the main Forums page. Thanks!

Welcoming a new WSB sponsor: Garden coach Julie Hale

It’s a WSB tradition to tell you about new sponsors when their ads start running, so we want to introduce you tonight to West Seattle-based garden coach Julie Hale, who’s offering her services just in time for the kickoff of spring gardening season. Julie’s career in horticulture has spanned more than twenty years. For much of that time, she owned a successful garden management and container-design business, with a clientele located primarily on the Eastside. In recent years, her focus has shifted to working one-on-one with clients in their own gardens. She offers a range of horticultural services, including general consulting, plant selection and placement advice, hands-on lessons in pruning techniques, formulation of seasonal maintenance plans, and container design and installation. She’s an active member of PlantAmnesty, a local educational nonprofit group dedicated to proper pruning and better gardening practices. She lives and gardens in West Seattle, and enjoys the opportunity to work locally with her neighbors and fellow West Seattleites! You can reach her by calling 206/351-8098 or e-mailing juliehale@q.com. We thank Julie for becoming a WSB sponsor; if you’re thinking about joining her and our other sponsors, here’s the place to start.

Got a West Seattle job to offer? Post it in the WSB Forums

 |   West Seattle businesses | West Seattle online

OK, so the job news in general can be a little glum. We’ve been through layoffs ourselves. However, people ARE hiring, and some are right here in West Seattle. So we’re now offering a section of the WSB Forums as a spot for any business physically based in West Seattle to post a WS job. You must include name, address, phone, e-mail in the post; no mystery, please. (We reserve the right to delete/reject any posting.) Seems worth a try, to help be part of the solution in uncertain times. Find the new WSB Forum Jobs section here.

One more caucus note: Cameo by Clinton campaign chair

This factoid didn’t make it into our original caucus report (see it, and its dozens of followup comments, here) — it was mentioned to us briefly on Saturday that Terry McAuliffe, national Clinton campaign chair, had dropped by the West Seattle High School gathering between 9 and 10 am, before the meeting officially started. We didn’t arrive till just after 10, so missed him. But eagle-eyed Cami MacNamara (editor of the Alki News Beacon) spotted photographic proof in, of all places, this Baltimore Sun political blog post (which focuses on the fact McAuliffe was photographed posing with Obama fans). P.S. Additional caucus photos are also up at the 34th District Democrats’ site; much of the discussion about Saturday’s process has centered on the ability to affect it by getting involved with the group – its next meeting is 7 pm this Wednesday, The Hall at Fauntleroy.

City/county councils’ Viaduct meeting under way

Huge thanks to YOU! Another record month here at WSB

We were starting to put this together as something to send to West Seattle businesses as advertising info but realized we really should share it with everybody right here on the site – because WSB has become a place not only where we post West Seattle news, information, photos and video for you here on the main page and in our additional sections, but also, most excitingly, a place where you communicate directly with your West Seattle neighbors, in the ever-growing WSB Forums as well as in comments on main-page posts. So these numbers are about you, not just about us: In the month of March, WSB had another record month — 426,980 pageviews — that’s almost 14,000 per day (on pace for more than 5,000,000 this year). The number of households and businesses visiting WSB each day averages more than 4,600 — keep in mind, that’s not people, that’s IP addresses, so in some cases – big companies, government agencies, etc. — many visitors can only be counted as one (that’s one of the few weak points of Internet statistics-measuring). Over the course of each week, more than 11,000 households/businesses visit WSB at least once. There’s a lot of other stuff we’re excited about, such as the continued content growth (311 home-page news articles during the month of March, an average of 10 per day; the new “West Seattle 101” section, etc.) and best of all, the expanding community connection, with our sponsorship of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day coming up on May 10, the next West Seattle Community Recognition Awards coming up April 18, Disaster Readiness info that you will find here on WSB throughout this month, and most exciting of all – the WSB Forum Community members banding together to organize fundraisers, with the Handbags for Hunger success last month and plans well under way for the April 19 fundraiser to help the arson victims at Puget Sound Key and Lock get back on their feet. THANK YOU FOR CREATING SUCH A STRONG ONLINE COMMUNITY and for helping spread the word about WSB – and for continuing to send us news, events, info, photos, questions, ideas (e-mail, text or phone us any time). This type of community-news site is a concept that is just starting to catch on in cities across the country, and we are proud and energized to have you as a partner, helping build a trailblazing, independently owned local site to help enhance existing community connections and create new ones – whether you are a reader, a sponsor, or both. (Please support and thank our sponsors for helping make it possible for this site to keep growing as a place for you to share information and get the latest news; they’re all listed here.)

End of an era in The Junction: New owner for Quid’-nunc

quidnuncchange.jpg

Bill Hibler (right) has been synonymous with “West Seattle computer store” for more than a decade now, as proprietor of Quid’-nunc in The Junction. But that era’s ending, now that Mohamed Lahlou (left) has bought the store; the transition’s in progress and will continue over the next few weeks. You may already have seen the big banner up in the window for LaptopFix.com — that’s one of Lahlou’s businesses, along with A-1 Best Computer. Hibler’s not completely leaving the computer business — he’ll continue running his Internet service, Quidnunc.net (currently with more than 500 accounts), but he’ll manage it from his West Seattle home. And he notes that he’s an Excel expert with a background in accounting – so if anyone’s looking for that sort of expertise, look him up! (He’ll still be active with the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and ArtsWest.) But he’s also looking forward to having more free time now, and told us his wife is looking forward to having him around more often. Hibler says Lahlou’s expertise is in repair and service, which is what more and more Quid’-nunc customers have been seeking rather than retail purchases of software and equipment, so the sale was a perfect fit.

New site feature: West Seattle CL listings on WSB “More” page

computer.jpgWe hope you’re already well aware that several sections of WSB have continuously updated activity beyond our home-page updates: The busiest 3 sections are the ever-growing WSB Forums, of course; the Blogs page (with headlines and excerpts from the newest 50 entries on the 100-plus West Seattle-based blogs on our list); and the More page – which started with the latest 20 West Seattle- (or Viaduct-) related news headlines from citywide/regional/national sources, and now is newly expanded with the addition of one more continuously updated list: Right below the news headlines, you’ll find the newest 80 Craigslist listings that are tagged “West Seattle” (pulled from all CL categories except personals and resumes). Here’s a direct link.

Update: Newest details on community fundraiser for arson victim

uptown51.jpg

(left to right, as they’re known in the WSB Forums, JanS, NewResident [Molly], Beachdrivegirl [Megan])
Those are some of the WSB Forum Community members who gathered this morning at Uptown Espresso in The Junction for their second meeting to plan the April 19 fundraiser for Puget Sound Key and Lock, which lost everything in the still-unsolved arson attack that gutted the business eight days ago. The event will be at Admiral Pub, whose owner Eric joined the group this morning:

ericadmiralpub.jpg

There’s still lots you can do to help. The group’s meeting again at Admiral Pub next Saturday at noon. In the meantime, much of the brainstorming is happening on a mailing list the group has set up – they invite you to join by following the instructions on this page. Meantime, mark your calendar for 6 pm April 19 at Admiral Pub (latest details and forum discussion here)! And you can donate any time to the Puget Sound Key and Lock account, through any Wells Fargo branch.

(Also from this morning’s meeting: To the right of Beachdrivegirl [Megan] are Alkiguy [Steve L], Kathy, Steve Sindiong from the Morgan Community Association, and JoB.)

trophy.jpgThe second quarterly West Seattle Community Recognition Awards will be announced in three weeks, and you’ve got about one week to nominate people who are working to make this a better place! The first-ever awards — brainchild of Divina‘s Julie Mireille Anderson — were announced at a January get-together at Capers; we then profiled the recipients here on WSB — Cindi Barker from Morgan Junction, Larry Carpenter from Alki, and Paul Sureddin from Fairmount Springs. So who’s next? Up to you! Forms are available at Divina (California/Genesee) and other participating businesses, or you can download it here (it’s a Word doc so you can use “replace” and type the info “inline”), and e-mail the completed form to us at westseattleblog@yahoo.com; explanatory info is here. Then mark your calendar for the informal gathering April 18 at which we’ll announce the winners!

An even-better CL ad: West Seattle bomb shelter for rent

bombshelter.jpgWe have sent a message to try to find out more. Meantime, figured you’d want to know about it if you hadn’t seen it already: CL ad even better than the one we linked in the WS Weekend Lineup post below — West Seattle bomb shelter for rent; the photo at left is one of four accompanying the CL posting. (Thanks to Diane for the tip!) P.S. Ever since seeing the ad, we haven’t been able to get this song out of our head, since the video came immediately to mind:

6:41 PM P.S. The bomb shelter’s owner e-mailed us back. We speculated in our first e-mail to them that they’d probably be inundated with conventional-media requests too, and in fact, the owner says channel 5’s coming by tonight. We’d try to doubleteam it but we’re headed for the Dyan Cannon lookalike winner announcement before “Deathtrap” at Youngstown Arts Center.

New season, new site feature: “West Seattle 101” on WSB

bookcover1.jpgWe are celebrating the first full day of spring with a new addition to WSB — a new section (note the “tab” link on our header) with selections from the popular book “West Seattle 101” by Lori Hinton (right). lorimugshot.jpgWe’re committed to continually expanding the amount of West Seattle-related news, information, and discussion we can offer you, so when Lori contacted us to see if WSB might be an additional place for people to find her stories, it sounded like a no-brainer to us. “West Seattle 101” began as a series of columns Lori wrote for the West Seattle Herald and grew into a book. As we start this partnership by publishing three features from the book (they’re linked from the WS 101 on WSB “home page” here), we also have Q and A with Lori so you can get to know her better:Read More

WSB sponsor gets a national spotlight

She didn’t point this out to us – WSB’er JT did – but WSB sponsor Rhonda Porter, who writes The Mortgage Porter, is quoted in an article from tomorrow’s New York Times. As we had just explained to somebody earlier today, we don’t put up a lot of West Seattle-related newspaper links here on the home page unless there’s something extraordinary about them, since that’s what the More page is for, but getting quoted in the NYT is a big deal in our book!
