06 Friday

The first-ever White Center Pumpkin Carving Contest is in the judging phase till about 8 pm; drop by and pick your fave! Five pumpkins were on display when we dropped by just after 7 – including John Tarrant‘s “Angry Birds” entry, above. You’ll find the pumpkins under a canopy right in front of Mac’s Triangle Pub on the north side of Delridge/16th/Roxbury – and the entries will be on display during White Center business-district trick-or-treating (5-8 pm) tomorrow night, too. (See a few more photos on our partner site White Center Now.)
(Added 12:53 pm: Video of some of the seized drugs, guns)
Our partner site White Center Now had first word yesterday of the big raids focused on two WC sites described as “hubs” for crime – and contributor Deanie Schwarz is covering the new information today, with federal, state, county, and other authorities briefing the media at Steve Cox Memorial Park.

Here’s the latest, with word of dozens of people arrested, dozens of guns seized, and confiscated drugs. We’ll be adding more details there throughout the afternoon.
From our partner site White Center Now – King County Sheriff’s Office has made the decision about who will fill the newly restored position of storefront deputy. It’s not the deputy who used to have the job, though he was reported to be a candidate for the position. Details here.
From partner site White Center Now: After talking about it at literally every meeting for the past few months, the Burien City Council has finally taken a vote on whether to proceed with potential annexation of White Center, Boulevard Park, and most of the rest of what it didn’t vote to annex two years ago – and that vote was “yes.” The annexation process still has a long way to go, though; if it does go all the way, instead of Roxbury being the city/county border (in most spots), it would be the Seattle/Burien border. Here’s the full story on WCN.
From partner site White Center Now: Downtown WC is about to get its third medical-marijuana business. This one will be a “farmers-market-style” operation, Northwest Cannabis Market, at 9640 16th SW, open only on weekends for starters. Full details on WCN.

Tonight, a new, properly illuminated flag flies over a small, decades-old tribute to veterans, re-dedicated today in the Delridge Triangle, where White Center and West Seattle meet. It’s the result of efforts by the White Center Chamber of Commerce. A full report on this afternoon’s re-dedication ceremony is on our partner site White Center Now.

Today’s the big kickoff drive for WestSide Baby‘s expanded car-seat-recycling effort – and to get ready for that, an army of volunteers descended on their HQ on Friday, according to executive director Nancy Woodland:
WestSide Baby had an amazing crew from Microsoft Office Product Marketing Group here through the United Way Day of Caring. Twenty men and women showed up (Friday) morning and worked like crazy to sort clothes, match bottle pieces, bundle diapers and dismantle car seats for recycling. This is just in time for our big Re-Ride Car Seat Reuse and Recycling event (today), 10 am-2 pm in WestSide Baby’s back yard @ 10032 15th Ave. SW. The “wrecking crew” separated all the car seat parts so that out of about 100 seats, we will send only 1 garbage bag to the landfill. Amazing impact from a great group of people. We can use more volunteers (today) Saturday from 10-2 for all kinds of similar projects if folks have extra time.
Or at least, bring your car seat – no matter what condition – to be recycled. (Here’s our preview from earlier this week.)
WestSide Baby has accepted car seats for recycling before – but usually, just the ones in good enough shape to reuse. Starting this Saturday, they will accept ALL used car seats – 10 am-2 pm on Saturday, bring yours to their donation HQ in White Center, 10032 15th SW (map) – so if you have one, in any condition, in the basement, the attic, the closet, the garage, bring it over! For the new campaign Re-Ride: Car Seat Reuse and Recycling for Local Children in Need, WS Baby is now partnering with recyclers Total Reclaim to enable acceptance of any and all car seats (if yours can’t be reused, they request a $5 minimum donation to help cover the cost of recycling its materials). WS Baby says they are only able to fill about HALF the requests they currently get for car seats, so widening the recycling program will hopefully help them fill more. P.S. If you can help them dismantle car seats in preparation for recycling, please contact Shana Allen at shana@westsidebaby.org or 206-767-1662.

As he did while helping search the 9/11 rubble in New York a decade ago, retired fire captain Rudy Alvarado wore a red/white/blue bandanna this morning, leading the day’s first formal 9/11 tribute in the West Seattle/White Center area. As the Holy Family Community Street Fair began for the day, he read the Firefighters’ Prayer:
Alvarado’s memories were featured in this Redmond Reporter story last week. Our longer version of this story on partner site White Center Now includes another video clip, with Alvarado leading the Pledge of Allegiance today, and Holy Family School (WSB sponsor) assistant principal Anca Wilson singing the national anthem. The Holy Family fair continues until 4 pm, at 20th/Roxbury, on the south side of the school/church campus; meantime, our list of other 9/11 tributes today/tonight is here.

(Thanks to Brenda C for Thursday photo of the “Spring Hill” demolition site – here’s our Wed. story)

We’re at the King County Courthouse, where Anthony Haroldlee Smith has just appeared for arraignment in the August 16th murder of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautusi, shot early that morning at 15th/Roxbury (original White Center Now coverage here). Our video above (shot through the glass that separates the gallery from the judge/lawyer areas of this particular courtroom) shows the brief hearing in its entirety, after Judge Ronald Kessler denied Smith’s lawyer’s request to keep the media from photographing his face, ending before witness names were mentioned in terms of a no-contact order. Smith only spoke to acknowledge his identity; his lawyer formally entered the plea of “not guilty.” Media reps (TV and radio were also here) were asked by an advocate not to photograph the two members of Sweetheart’s family who came to watch the hearing. Smith remains in jail in lieu of one million dollars bail.

3:12 PM: Looks like tonight’s support rally may turn into a victory party. Just received from Bank of America, and confirmed by someone who answered the phone at Village Green Perennial Nursery (Vera was not available):
I wanted to make you aware of a final decision in regards to Vera Johnson’s mortgage modification.
As soon as we learned of Vera Johnson’s concerns, Bank of America employees at our Seattle Customer Assistance Center began working closely with her to understand her financial situation and collect the necessary paperwork. Based on the financial documents she provided and some last minute issues we identified and were able to help her resolve, Fannie Mae extended to Ms. Johnson a permanent modification.
We are pleased to be able to offer her this permanent modification that should allow her to stay in her home and keep her business.

JAPANESE ARTISTS PERFORM ON ALKI: Word of this came in late last night – note the weather caveat:
4 very talented artists and entertainers will be performing at Alki Beach, August 31 6:00pm near the Statue of Liberty.
They said they would like as many people to view their performances since they are here for only a short period of time.
1. Bosshiko is a high-profile artist in Asia winning various awards. He will be performing a live painting using black sumi ink on Japanese washi paper. The painting will be enourmous and will be done in 30 minutes.
2. Sayoko Hirano is an artist from Kyoto learning under Bosshiko. She will also be performing a live painting.
3. Chiaki is a professional dancer and will perform a powerful martial arts inspired contemporary dance.
4. Gon is one of the few traditional Japanese storytellers left even in Japan. His storytelling always gets the crowd laughing even if you don’t understand Japanese.
They will cancel the performance if it rains.

Tonight’s the night for the benefit rally/party/auction on behalf of Village Green Perennial Nursery owner Vera Johnson‘s foreclosure fight (first reported here last month). Organizers from Friends of Village Green and White Center Business Owners of Sustainable Support have put together quite the lineup for the event, 5-9 pm at Big Al Brewing (9832 14th SW). WC-BOSS founder Aileen Sison describes it as “a fun-filled evening of community solidarity with live music, ice cream and refreshments provided by Full Tilt Ice Cream and more for your enjoyment. We will also be showing a entertaining and informative short film as well as having guest speakers addressing the housing crisis to raise foreclosure prevention awareness. Stick around for the super silent auction for killer local items and cool out to tunes by Del Rey and WC’s home grown musical talents like Rats in the Grass, Graves 33, and The GNU Deal! … Come show your support and toast to homeowner advocacy, local businesses, and be seen wearing the night’s color of support and go GREEN!” Sison shared the list of silent-auction items – read on to see the list (and a few photos):Read More
If you haven’t already seen the news over on partner site White Center Now: The community’s been begging for the county to restore its “storefront deputy,” a WC-dedicated sheriff’s deputy who works the community from a home base in the Sheriff’s Office storefront right in the heart of the business district. A petition has been in circulation for weeks – the deputy’s been gone for months – and was going to be presented to Sheriff Sue Rahr this Thursday. But now – its goal is in sight: As part of an anti-gang-violence plan just announced by King County Executive Dow Constantine and County Council members, a special criminal-justice fund will be tapped for programs including restoring the deputy, pending official council approval. More at WCN.
Just a little more than two weeks till the 10th anniversary of 9/11 – and two three tributes are now planned in our area:

(Photos by Alki photographer David Hutchinson from September 2001 and September 2009)
STATUE OF LIBERTY COMMEMORATION: The Statue of Liberty on Alki became an unofficial touchstone/gathering place for mourners in the nights and days following the 2001 attacks. The date held significance in later years, including the unveiling of the recast statue on 9/11/07. And this year, a tribute is planned at Liberty Plaza, according to word just in from the Southwest Seattle Historical Society:
Please join the community to memorialize the fallen as well as survivors and families of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York. On Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 7 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil at the Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza
(pending permission from the Seattle Parks Department).A 9/11 memorial exhibit can be viewed from 12-7 p.m. at the Log House Museum, 3003 61st Ave. SW on Sunday, September 11.
Added note: Parks permission is now granted, as of 8/30/11.
WHITE CENTER OBSERVANCE: Once again this year, the Holy Family Church and School Street Fair will coincide with the 9/11 anniversary, and there will be a remembrance program. The street fair is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 10th-11th, just west of the school and church at 20th/Roxbury (more information here), and the remembrance will be on Sunday (we’ll update when we know the exact time).
(added) CONCERT AT HOLY ROSARY: After reading our original mention of two events, Michael sent information on another one: Cantaré Vocal Ensemble and other groups plus the “Voices of 9/11” in a memorial concert at Holy Rosary, 3 pm on September 11th, with a portion of ticket proceeds benefiting the Twin Towers Memorial Fund. Full details here.

(WSB photo of deputies at the murder scene, early Tuesday)
Just in from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office:
A charge of Murder Second Degree (11-1-07472-9) was filed today against Anthony H. Smith, 25, who is accused in the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman in White Center on August 16. The charge includes a firearm enhancement. If convicted as charged, the sentence range is 16 to 24½ years in prison. Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on September 1 at 8:30 a.m. at the King County Courthouse, courtroom 1201. He remains in jail with bail set at $1 million.
The documents contain additional details of what preceded the shooting, including an allegation that Smith and two other as-yet-unidentified suspects approached victim Sweetheart Marie Failautusi and her friends, asked for a cigarette, and were told “no”; an argument and fistfight ensued, following a short while later by the shooting.
ADDED 3:10 PM: Transcription of the charging document’s narrative – the story of what law enforcers say happened – ahead:Read More

The mini-park where Delridge, 16th SW, and SW Roxbury meet holds not only the public art that was decorated at Christmastime last year, but also a Veterans’ Memorial. Now, improvements and a rededication are in the works for the memorial in the South Delridge Triangle, and you can contribute tomorrow by going to a benefit breakfast at Holy Family. The memorial has long needed TLC, and community members are working to make it happen, but fundraising is needed, and this is a major step. The pancake breakfast is planned for 8-11 am Saturday, 9615 20th SW, with the menu also including eggs, sausage, coffee, and juice, for $6 suggested donation adults/$3 kids under 12. The rededication and flag-raising ceremony, meantime, is planned for 4 pm September 18th, with veterans from West Seattle and White Center participating.
2:55 PM: A bail hearing for the 25-year-old man arrested on Wednesday in Highland Park in connection with Tuesday’s White Center murder has just ended in a King County Jail courtroom. WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports from KCJ that bail was set at $1 million; the suspect waived his right to appear in person, so was not there. Next step in the case will be a King County Prosecuting Attorney decision on filing charges (Monday’s the deadline), and of course two suspects remain at large – as the King County Sheriff’s Office noted in its official confirmation of the arrest (added today to our story from last night that first reported the suspect had been booked into jail).
3:22 PM UPDATE: A few more details have arrived in the probable-cause documents from prosecutors. Among them: Gang rivalry is believed to have caused the fight that led to the shooting of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautusi. And this suspect (whom we won’t identify until he is charged) is alleged to have fired the deadly shots; we’ve transcribed the probable-cause allegation in our report on White Center Now.

8:09 PM: The Seattle Times (WSB news partner), quoting KING 5, reports one arrest in connection with yesterday morning’s murder of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautusi at 15th/Roxbury in White Center. We’ve been working to confirm this, since getting reports of police activity in Highland Park, about half a mile north of the shooting scene, but haven’t heard back yet from SPD (who would have jurisdiction in that area) or King County Sheriff’s Office (who are handling the murder case). More information as we get it; earlier today, surveillance video was released showing what investigators described as 3 suspects in the case.
9:15 PM: People who live in the Highland Park neighborhood where police activity was reported earlier tell WSB/WCN contributor Deanie Schwarz that one man was arrested – but there is no official information yet linking that arrest to this case, so we’re not going into any further specifics, nor has KCSO yet officially announced an arrest.
10:16 PM UPDATE: A homicide suspect has been booked into King County Jail within the past hour – and his first name is the same one that was mentioned to us at the aforementioned arrest scene in Highland Park. The homicide suspect’s online court records include 30 incidents, including theft and drug cases.
11:23 PM UPDATE: The suspect was most recently in jail for four days in March after an arrest for DUI and driving with a suspended license, according to the jail register. The online court-records site that provides most detailed information is shut down for the night, so there’s some research we won’t be able to do till morning. We also will find out tomorrow how soon a bail hearing will be scheduled.
11 AM THURSDAY: KCSO has finally sent a news release confirming the arrest:
Yesterday afternoon at around 4:30 PM, a 25-year-old man was arrested for his role in the White Center homicide that occurred early Tuesday morning.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, along with members of the TAC-30 SWAT team and the Gang Unit all assisted in the peaceful apprehension of this suspect at his home, which was not far from the shooting scene. The identification of the suspect was made through deputies and detectives that work the White Center area, along with tips generated through the release of the surveillance footage.
“The citizens and business owners of White Center were upset to hear of this tragedy in their area,” according to Major James Graddon, Commander of the Sheriff’s Office West precinct. “They have been working hard with us for many years to improve public safety in their neighborhoods. This incident will ultimately be resolved through the continued support of the community and the efforts of the deputies and detectives.”
There are still two suspects outstanding in this incident. Any information that the public may have on any of the three suspects is still needed. Tips may be phoned in to (206) 296-3311 or 9-1-1.
That’s a video file just provided by the King County Sheriff’s Office (we uploaded it to YouTube for playback), which detectives hope might help solve yesterday morning’s shooting death of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautusi. KCSO spokesperson Deputy Travis DeFries explains the video as follows:
There are still 3 suspects at-large and all are described as being black males in their early-to-mid 20’s.
Video surveillance footage from nearby businesses has been reviewed by detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit. All three suspects are captured on video and we are now asking for the public’s help in identifying them. Portions of the video have been blurred out to protect the identities of the witnesses and victim.
As it says at the start and finish of the clip – call 911 if you have any information about the suspects. (Meantime, memorials for the victim continue growing, both online and at the scene.)

(Photo by WSB/White Center Now contributor Deanie Schwarz)
Another update on this morning’s deadly shooting at 15th/Roxbury in White Center: The 23-year-old victim is from High Point, according to a woman who told WSB/WCN contributor Deanie Schwarz that she’s her cousin. She says the victim’s name is “Sweetheart“; no formal identification is expected any sooner than mid-afternoon. More details on White Center Now. Still no word of arrests; the latest on the investigation is in our morning report.

3:38 AM: A 22-year-old woman is dead and a block of 15th SW is closed off just south of Roxbury (map) after a shooting in White Center early this morning. So far, no arrests, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the case. We have ongoing coverage on partner site White Center Now.
8:38 AM: Still no arrest(s) reported; we expect a more formal update from KCSO later this morning. 15th SW has reopened, though.
11:39 AM UPDATE: Official news release in from Deputy DeFries, who briefed us and TV crews at the scene early today – note that it changes the victim’s age:
A 23-year-old female is dead and detectives are working leads in a shooting incident that occurred overnight in the White Center area of King County.
This morning, at about 12:20 AM, deputies were called to the area of SW Roxbury St. and 15th Ave. SW by a passing witness for a fight disturbance. When deputies arrived they met with a small group of females, including the now-deceased victim of the shooting. Deputies were told that the disturbance was minor and that the other group, which consisted of 3 black males, had left the area. The group of women declined to speak further about the incident.
Deputies stayed in the general area and began to walk on foot to increase their visibility and to try to prevent further violence from erupting. Just before 1:00 AM these deputies heard several gun shots coming from the area of the original disturbance. When the returned they found the victim lying in the middle of 15th Ave. SW with at least one gunshot wound. Witnesses said that at least 2 of the original 3 black males had returned and one then fired on the victim. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.
At this point, no suspects are in custody and no weapon has been recovered. Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are investigating. We have not been able to rule out if this was gang-related or not. Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit will be assisting, as needed.
2:08 PM: We’ve just published a new update, with what a relative has told us about the victim.
