Two months after we first told you about the Cascade Bicycle Club‘s ride across the westbound West Seattle Bridge and around the peninsula, tomorrow is the day for the Emerald City Ride. It starts and finishes in SODO, 7 am until about 11 am, heading onto southbound 99 to get to the westbound West Seattle Bridge – the westbound lanes (NOT the eastbound lanes) will be closed approximately 5:30 am to 9:30 am Sunday. Then the riders head around the peninsula:

They’ll head back on the regular bike route across the low bridge. P.S. Registration has closed, so no last-minute signups. Cascade was expecting at least 2,000 riders.

2:58 PM: Thanks for the tips. A crash is blocking multiple lanes on the westbound bridge just west of 99.
3:44 PM: SDOT says the scene is clear.
4:25 PM: Listening back to archived radio exchanges, officers and firefighters at the scene reported the same thing as officers below – two people walked away from the crash. Police checked the plates and the car, registered to a West Seattle address, had not been reported stolen.

Two years ago, we told you about a natural-gas pipeline replacement project that was at the time scheduled to start soon along a mile-long stretch of Beach Drive and two connecting streets. After what Puget Sound Energy describes as permitting delays, it’s finally about to begin.
Thanks to the area resident who recently told us the project notice was being distributed. We’ve since obtained it from PSE (see it here) – here are the key points:
PSE and InfraSource crews will be replacing portions of the existing underground natural gas main. We’re committed to completing our work safely and efficiently, and our crews will do their best to reduce impacts to you and your neighbors.
Project details

What: Replacing a portion of the underground natural gas main
When: Expected to begin the week of May 13, and last for approximately six months.
Typical work hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Beach Drive Southwest, 48TH Avenue Southwest, and Lincoln Park Way SouthwestWhat you can expect
There will likely be noise from trucks and heavy machinery
Traffic control flaggers and signs will guide vehicles and pedestrians safely through the project area
o Beach Drive Southwest,48th Avenue Southwest,and Lincoln Park Way Southwest will be reduced down to one lane near the work area
o A portion of the sidewalk on Beach Drive Southwest,48th Avenue Southwest,and Lincoln Park Way Southwest will be closed. Detour signs will be posted
Some street parking will be impacted. “No parking” signs will be placed in the area prior to work beginning
We will work to maintain access to driveways whenever possible, in coordination with impacted neighbors
Some customers along the project route may experience a temporary interruption of natural gas. We’ll
notify impacted customers prior to beginning work requiring an interruption in service. For customers who will have their service interrupted, work inside customer homes may be required to re-light appliances after the service interruption. Please call 888-225-5773 for more information
After the construction is complete, you’ll notice temporary patches in the road and/or sidewalk. These temporary patches will remain until a restoration contractor crew returns to complete the final restoration. The restoration schedule is dependent upon weather, permitting and crew availability
We asked PSE about the work phasing; a spokesperson replied, “Crews will start on the north end and move south. PSE will be replacing an older section of infrastructure in order to continue to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to customers. The project will replace the gas main along Beach DR SW to SW Canada Dr.” Here’s another map sketching out what they’re doing and where. As noted above, the project is expected to last about six months (double the estimate given two years ago).

AFTERNOON NOTE: For clarity, as inspired by comments below – At 7 am, SDOT’s live camera showed the gates lifted and the lights green. However, not in view on the live camera were barricades not yet lifted on the west end. Thanks to Savannah for the heads-up on more than a month of work ahead at 30th/Holden – her neighborhood got notices about it, and she thought others who travel through the area should know too. We subsequently obtained the construction notice from Seattle Public Utilities. They tell us this work will replace a 15-foot section of 10-inch-wide sewer pipe, with some added accessibility features on the sidewalk:
For this work, SPU contractor crews will excavate, remove, and replace the section of pipe. New ADA curb ramps will also be installed in the work area. Crews will then restore the roadway. This work is part of a larger citywide sewer rehabilitation effort that enables SPU to provide reliable sewer service to you and your neighbors.
LOCATION
Work will occur near the intersection of 30th Ave SW and SW Holden St. View the map for approximate work location and equipment staging.SCHEDULE
Construction is scheduled to begin as soon as April 29 with work taking up to 5 weeks to complete. Construction activities will occur on weekdays, 7:30-3:30 pm. Please note that the start date, duration, and working hours are subject to change due to permitting, weather, crew availability, and other factors.ANTICIPATED IMPACTS
Residents and businesses will continue to receive normal sewer services during construction. However, you can also expect:• Lanes will be reduced on SW Holden St in the work area. Traffic control measures and signage will be in place to direct traffic.

10:20 PM: According to SPD radio, King County Sheriff’s Office deputies are closing Roxbury at 15th, after a collision reported as a driver hitting a pedestrian – reportedly a hit-run with life-threatening injuries. The driver was last seen heading eastbound on Roxbury. One officer says a witness believes the vehicle was a gray Mazda SUV.
10:38 PM: SFD medics are taking the victim to Harborview.
11 PM: Roxbury has reopened. We have followup inquiries out but may not hear back until tomorrow morning.
8:30 AM TUESDAY: SFD says the victim is an 81-year-old man who was in critical condition when transported.
10:56 AM: KCSO tells us the victim has died, and a spokesperson adds, “Preliminary investigation says the suspect vehicle was a silver SUV, possibly a Mazda. The vehicle would have front-end damage to the grill and hood area.” They are hoping to get more information about the suspect out later today in hopes of public help in tracking them down.
ORIGINAL MONDAY ANNOUNCEMENT: We received this Tuesday traffic alert from SDOT late today:
Tomorrow morning, the Seattle Department of Transportation’s urban forestry and signs and markings teams will be closing the westbound off-ramp to SW Admiral Way from the West Seattle High Bridge at around 9:30 a.m. This closure is necessary due to a broken limb that requires removal, although our team has already stabilized it earlier today.
Detour signage will be in place to guide drivers to SW Admiral Way. The designated detour route is as follows: continue on the West Seattle High Bridge onto Fauntleroy Way SW. Then, turn right onto SW Oregon St, followed by another right onto California Ave SW, which will lead you to SW Admiral Way.
They’re not sure yet how long the work will take.
TUESDAY MORNING UPDATE: SDOT says the ramp should reopen by 3 pm.
9:46 AM: Now a Seattle Fire “rescue extrication” response is on the way to the 4700 block of 45th SW for what’s reported as a car-on-side crash. Updates to come.

9:49 AM: SFD crews are arriving and report “all occupants are out” of what police tell dispatch is a “minivan.” The response is being downsized.

2:54 PM: Police confirm what a commenter below first reported – that the woman driving the minivan was arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless endangerment and booked into King County Jail. They also confirm that two children were in the minivan at the time of the crash and that both were taken to the Southwest Precinct, but had no information beyond that.
9:08 AM: As noted briefly in our morning traffic roundup, that flipped car is blocking Delridge Way SW near Elmgrove. Our photographer just arrived at the scene and reports a tow truck is arriving. Unlike many flipped-car crashes, this one did not initially draw a major “rescue”-type SFD response, and the one engine that was sent was dismissed quickly, which indicates no major injuries.
9:11 AM: We talked briefly with police, who told us the driver fled the scene, after hitting a parked car and flipping this one. They hope to have the street reopened within 20 minutes or so.
9:22 AM: Reopened.
9:40 AM: Listening back to the original dispatch audio, two people were in the car and both bolted. No initial description other than “black clothing.” When the officer checked on the status of its plates, it came back “clear” – no theft reported – but expired.

2:23 PM: Thanks for the tip. If you’re headed back this way from points north/east, be aware there’s a crash response blocking part of the westbound bridge just east of the Highway 99 overpass. Responders on scene are awaiting an SDOT crew to clean up debris and fluids. No major injuries reported so far.
2:29 PM: A dispatcher just told on-scene crews that the SDOT crew is delayed, “stuck in traffic” on I-5, waiting to get onto the bridge.
2:45 PM: SDOT has arrived, SFD has departed, westbound lanes are still partly blocked per police but traffic is getting by.

Thanks to Lorrie for the tip via a comment. SDOT has updated its plan for closing the West Seattle low bridge to enable its control-and-communications upgrade work. Now the closure is scheduled to start at 6 am Saturday (April 20) and end by 5 am Monday, April 29. SDOT explains, “The closure was originally scheduled to begin on April 19, but we realized we could accomplish the work planned that day without closing the bridge until April 20.”
