West Seattle, Washington
22 Sunday
One more reminder – SDOT is about to start work on the Admiral Way Bridge earthquake-safety project. Crews will start that work under the bridge, in Fairmount Ravine, so Fairmount Avenue will be closed to all traffic beneath the bridge for the duration of the project – expected to be about eight months. As we reported last week, here’s roughly where the road will be blocked:
As explained by project spokesperson Dr. Matthew Howard, “There will be barricades at the bottom of the hill at SW Prince, at the top at SW Forest, and then another set farther down at the actual work area, with fencing. There will be no thru traffic as the work will be taking place on the bridge structure with cranes and equipment blocking the road.” Later in the summer – not likely before August – the top of the bridge (which is really two bridges) will see lane closures, plus two weekend-long full closures. If you have any questions about the project, comment below or email us – we’ll be talking with Dr. Howard tomorrow morning for more details.
6:04 PM: SFD and SPD are on scene at Myers Way and 1st Avenue South, after a motorcycle rider was reported seriously hurt; in early radio exchanges, no other vehicle was reported to be involved. SFD is preparing to take the rider to a hospital.
6:12 PM: In a radio exchange with emergency doctors, medic described the rider as in his late 30s and said he collided with a barrier. He’s being taken to Harborview Medical Center.
10:54 AM: Thanks for the texted tips. “Police activity” that’s been under way most of the morning now has the 1st Avenue South Bridge blocked both ways, so you’ll need to use either the South Park Bridge (or West Seattle bridges) to get across the river. (added) Archived radio exchanges indicate it’s a person-in-crisis situation.
11:10 AM: The northbound direction has been reopened to traffic but the southbound side is still closed.
2:41 PM: As commenters have noted, and as traffic cameras show, the southbound side is still closed.
4:20 PM: They’re still dealing with the person in crisis, after 7+ hours.
5:15 PM: The WSDOT camera focused on the police standing by is no longer showing them – so we’re waiting for official word that this is over. (Added: That official word csme at 5:39 pm. We are checking with SFD re: the person’s condition.)
9:31 PM: Here’s the summary we received from SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty: “At around 9:00 a.m. crews were dispatched to be on standby for a possible rescue response at the 1st Ave bridge. The call was for a person in crisis on the bridge. At Around 4:30 p.m. the patient agreed to come down on an aerial ladder. The patient, an approx. 32-year-old male, refused treatment by medics. The incident was turned over to SPD.”
3:53 PM: At Delridge/Trenton, SFD is evaluating one person reported injured in what was described over the air as a collision between a vehicle driver and “moped” rider. Buses are being rerouted. Avoid the area for a while.
4:18 PM: Thanks to B for the photos.
Per SFD radio, two people are being taken to the hospital, one via medic unit, one via private ambulance. B says both were from the “moped.” The scene is clearing and Metro says buses are returning to regular routing; we’ll be following up with SFD.
5:13 PM: SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty confirms that both people taken to the hospital were on the two-wheeled vehicle – “~23-year-old male in stable condition, ~24-year-old male in serious condition.”
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, July 5. Not an official four-day holiday weekend, but we’re guessing it will feel a lot like one anyway.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
The heat-advisory alert takes effect at noon; today’s forecast is for sunshine, high in the mid-80s. Today’s sunrise was at 5:18 am, while sunset will be at 9:09 pm.

We have some answers today to questions that readers had after we reported two days ago that SDOT would start the Fairmount Avenue closure next Monday, as the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project gets going. The main question was where exactly Fairmount will be blocked off, so that area residents can get to and from their homes, and so that would-be through traffic isn’t turning around halfway up/down the hill. Dr. Matthew Howard from SDOT’s project team says:
The contractor confirmed with me that there will be barricades at the bottom of the hill at SW Prince, at the top at SW Forest, and then another set farther down at the actual work area, with fencing. There will be no thru traffic as the work will be taking place on the bridge structure with cranes and equipment blocking the road. See the below image to see a rough view of where barricades will be:
He says they’re hoping that will be enough to dissuade would-be cut-through traffic. This is a full closure – not just for drivers, but also for people walking, running, riding, and rolling. On the bridge deck itself, SDOT says the lane closures – between Walnut and 39th – aren’t expected to start until August, and dates aren’t yet set for the two full weekend closures that will be needed for that part of the project.
4:38 PM: A texter says traffic is blocked at 26th/Roxbury right now. According to radio exchanges, a teenager was hit by a bus but not seriously injured; they proceeded to board the bus, on the eastbound side of Roxbury, and reportedly said they were OK, but Metro wanted them checked out, so SFD was called. The one engine that responded has already closed out their response.
10:39 PM: SFD tells us the teenager is 18 years old and suffered only minor injuries, declining to be taken to a hospital.
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Wednesday, July 3.

Thanks for the tips! SDOT has placed signage at both ends of Fairmount Ravine – Fairmount and Harbor, and Fairmount and Forest – with the dates that Fairmount Avenue will be fully closed as part of the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project: Starting next Monday (July 8) and potentially continuing into late February. (When SDOT announced last week that work would start “as soon as” today, they told us they still didn’t have detour plans ready to announce but that “traffic control” wouldn’t be needed immediately.) The project will also include some lane closures and two full weekend closures of the bridge itself, but we checked after verifying the Fairmount signage tonight, and there’s no signage up top – on or near the bridge – yet. We’ll circle back with SDOT tomorrow.
6:00 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, July 1.

(Slide from SDOT presentation at May 2024 Admiral Neighborhood Association meeting)
One month after the Admiral Neighborhood Association got an update on the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project (WSB coverage here), SDOT has just announced that work will start as soon as Monday (July 1). The bridge over Fairmount Ravine is actually two bridges; they’ll have some closures during the project, but, as explained in the ANA meeting, the biggest impact will be under those bridges, with a months-long around-the-clock closure of Fairmount Avenue. Here’s the SDOT announcement:
As early as Monday, July 1, SDOT is set to begin seismic retrofits on the Admiral Way North and South Bridges. These essential improvements will enhance the bridges’ ability to withstand earthquakes. The construction is expected to last approximately 7-8 months, but schedules may change due to factors such as weather and availability of crews and materials.
To ensure the work is completed safely and efficiently, there will be lane closures on SW Admiral Way at the bridge throughout the construction period. Additionally, there will be full 24/7 closures of the bridge on two weekends, with specific dates to be determined. Fairmount Avenue beneath the bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, for the duration of the construction.
We understand these closures will impact those who regularly use the bridge and Fairmount Avenue, and we will strive to minimize these disruptions.
This update didn’t mention the specific detour plans for the closures, nor did last month’s briefing, so we’re following up about those.
ADDED FRIDAY: SDOT says they haven’t finalized those plans but that the work potentially starting Monday won’t require “traffic control.”
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Wednesday, June 26.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Cloudy this morning, then clearing, breezy, high near 70. Today’s sunrise was at 5:13 am, while sunset will be at 9:11 pm (and will stay there until Saturday).

6:48 PM: Thanks for the tip. The low bridge is out of service right now. Gates won’t open, says a stuck bike rider.
7:06 PM: Gates still down. Watching the live camera, we’ve seen some westbound riders turn around and head back eastbound. Some westbound vehicles are still waiting. We’re trying to reach SDOT to ask if they have any ETA on repairs.
7:41 PM: SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson tells WSB, “The bridge is currently stuck due to a technical issue with the tail locking mechanism preventing us from opening or closing the bridge. A maintenance crew is currently en route to diagnose and fix the problem according to our standard response procedures.”
8:29 PM: Reopened, after 2+ hours. SDOT promises an update when they get the details on what went wrong.

4:40 PM: SPD and SFD are on the scene of a crash at Harbor Avenue SW and Fairmount Avenue, and police are asking for traffic-control help. Officers have described it to dispatch as three cars, two of them parked, and a driver under investigation for possible DUI. No serious injuries reported.
5:05 PM: That driver has been taken into custody. Meantime, at least two cars are being towed, so the scene might clear before too much longer.
(Reader photo added, sent by Barbara)
11:58 PM: Police investigating a pickup truck missing a wheel in the 1200 block of Alki Avenue SW discovered it was on fire. SFD is arriving and they’ve now told dispatch it’s “fully involved,” so they’re blocking traffic on Alki Avenue. The person in the pickup is reported to have gotten out. Police said the truck apparently lost its wheel in the 1900 block of Harbor Avenue.
12:27 AM: Thanks to everyone who’s sent images. This short clip is from Tom:
We don’t know the status of the fire but the engine sent by SFD is logged as still being on scene.
12:33 AM: This photo is from Jim:
And according to a related text, the fire’s out.
12:53 AM: Police told dispatch they’re reopening Alki Avenue to traffic.
8:34 PM: Thanks for the photo! Police and SDOT were just dispatched to this – a large tree limb falling on a car in the 4700 block of 40th SW, reportedly also blocking the road. No injuries reported.
9:52 PM: Just went through the area; crews are there now.
10:52 AM: Police are closing westbound SW Roxbury in the 28th SW vicinity and eastbound at 30th. They’ve been trying to stop a man who reportedly has been in multiple areas of West Seattle this morning swinging a shovel at people and signs. Officers have also told dispatch he appears to be armed with at least one knife. No injuries reported but avoid the area for a while.
11:09 AM: Our crew reports this is all centered around the service station on the south side of 30th/Roxbury right now (that’s the county side, but this all started in the city, so it’s SPD’s case). Officers are in a standoff with the man, who is by the propane area (right side of the photo above).
11:27 AM: The former Roxhill Elementary building, now home to several Seattle Public Schools programs, is in shelter-in-place, per police radio. (This is the last day of the school year, with one-hour early dismissal scheduled districtwide.)
11:33 AM: Officers just told dispatch that they’ve taken the man into custody. An ambulance that was standing by (for possible [corrected] “involuntary treatment”) is being sent in. An SFD engine too.
11:40 AM: Dispatch has been told that the school building can be told it’s OK to lift shelter-in-place, and that the other area containment will be broken down, which means SW Roxbury should reopen soon.
11:51 AM: Our crew reports the man has been loaded into the ambulance for transport. Meantime, Metro says its buses have resumed travel on Roxbury.
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, June 21.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
First full day of summer! Sunny, high in the mid-80s (as it was Thursday – 84). Today’s sunrise was at 5:11 am again – earliest of the year, and tomorrow it starts going back the other way – while sunset will be at 9:11 pm and will stay there until June 29.
