West Seattle, Washington
19 Thursday
6:00 AM: Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 4th. This is the second full day of closure for the ramp from the eastbound West Seattle Bridge to northbound Highway 99:

WSDOT said on Wednesday (as we reported here) that it expects repairs to take 10 days. Here’s the 5′ x 4′ hole that led to the shutdown Tuesday night:
Meantime, you can get to NB 99 via the 1st Avenue South Bridge, or by taking the WS Bridge’s 1st Avenue South exit and getting onto 99 in SODO.
TRANSIT
Metro – Downtown-bound buses that usually take the high bridge to NB 99 are detouring while the ramp is closed. Otherwise, regular schedule, but trip cancellations are still happening.
Water Taxi – Continuing the spring/summer schedule.
Washington State Ferries‘ Triangle Route continues on the 2-boat schedule but with the chance of sailing cancellations, so check here for alerts/updates and see Vessel Watch for boats’ locations.
OTHER SPOTLIGHT TRAFFIC CAMERAS
Delridge cameras: Besides the one below (Delridge/Henderson), cameras are also up at Delridge/Genesee, Delridge/Juneau, Delridge/Orchard, and Delridge/Oregon.

High Bridge – the view from its southwest end (when SDOT points the 35th/Avalon/Fauntleroy camera that way):

Low Bridge – east-end vicinity:

1st Ave. S. Bridge – another route across the river:

Highway 99: – the northbound side at Lander.

MORE TRAFFIC CAMS: See all working traffic cams citywide here, most with video options; West Seattle and vicinity-relevant cameras are on this WSB page.
BRIDGE INFO: Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed to see if the city’s movable bridges are opening for vessel traffic.
WEATHER & SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Clouds and a chance of pm rain, high in the low 60, breezy tonight. Sunrise was at 5:48 am; sunset will be at 8:26 pm.
If you see trouble on the bridges/streets/paths/bay, please text or call us (when you can do it safely, and after you’ve reported to authorities). Thank you!
1:29 PM: Thanks to Eddie for the photo. That stalled semitruck is still blocking the westbound low bridge, which is down to one lane as a result. It’s been there more than an hour.
2:59 PM: Police have just told dispatch “the bridge is open both ways.”
6:00 AM: Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 3rd. We start with a continuing closure that started Tuesday evening:

The ramp from the eastbound West Seattle Bridge to northbound Highway 99 is closed until WSDOT – which is accountable for the ramp, as it’s a state structure – can repair a large hole that started blowing out tires during Tuesday’s pm commute (WSB coverage here). WSDOT had hoped to fix it quickly but realized it was a bigger job than first believed. We will find out more later today about the timeframe. Meantime, if you have to get to NB 99, use the 1st Avenue South Bridge, or take the WS Bridge’s 1st Avenue South exit and get onto 99 in SODO.
9:22 AM UPDATE: Longer story later, but we just spoke with WSDOT again, and they say it’s closed “until further notice” as they evaluate how to repair it and whether the ramp itself is “structurally sound.” They also say the hole is not in the same spot as was fixed a year ago – it’s about 100 feet away.
11:59 AM: WSDOT expects the ramp to be closed for at least 10 days. We’ve just been over to the scene beneath the ramp. (added) Here’s a closer look at the underside of the 5′ x 4′ hole:

WEATHER & SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Clouds making way for sun, high in the upper 60s. Sunrise was at 5:49 am; sunset will be at 8:24 pm.
If you see trouble on the bridges/streets/paths/bay, please text or call us (when you can do it safely, and after you’ve reported to authorities). Thank you!
6:41 PM: The eastbound West Seattle Bridge ramp to northbound Highway 99 has some kind of “pothole that’s been blowing out tires,” police told dispatch, so they’re working to close the ramp. They’ve just reported a fifth vehicle with a blowout, in the meantime. Police describe the pothole as being “on the curve” of the ramp, before it merges onto 99.
7:03 PM: The ramp is closed, which means among other things that buses are diverted. Police have since described the problem on the ramp as a hole, not just a pothole.
7:09 PM: We don’t know if it’s in the same spot, but one year ago, a hole in the ramp was fixed. It’s a WSDOT – state – structure, not city, as noted then, and we’re hearing that they’re being summoned now to handle the situation.
8:23 PM: Photo above is from our pre-sunset drive eastbound on the bridge to at least get a look at the response. Since then, we’ve talked by phone with a WSDOT spokesperson who says crews are going to do an “epoxy fill” on the hole and that the ramp is expected to reopen in a matter of hours. He didn’t know (yet) if it was the same spot repaired in April of last year.
(Added: Photo from Tuesday morning, posted in comments by Wendell)
10:48 PM: Just talked to WSDOT again. The ramp will NOT be fixed in time for the morning commute – they say it requires a heftier repair than first thought – as summarized, first they thought asphalt would do it, then they thought epoxy, and now they’re thinking something beyond that. They’ll know more in the morning. Meantime, if you need to get to Highway 99, options would include taking the bridge to 1st Avenue South and getting onto 99 in SODO, or use the 1st Avenue South Bridge.
9:22 AM UPDATE: (Also noted in Wednesday morning traffic coverage) Longer story later, but we just spoke with WSDOT again, and they say it’s closed “until further notice” as they evaluate how to repair it and whether the ramp itself is “structurally sound.” They also say the hole is not in the same spot as was fixed a year ago – it’s about 100 feet away. (Added above, WSDOT’s photo of the hole, which is described now as 5′ x 4′.)
11:59 AM: We’ve just been to the scene beneath the ramp. WSDOT now expects it to be closed for at least 10 days.
6:02 AM: Good morning! It’s Tuesday, May 2nd.

1:55 PM: Thanks for the tip. SFD and SPD are in the 2400 block of Harbor Avenue SW, near the 7-11, for what was dispatched as a “rescue extrication” call. SPD says the street is closed in both directions. We’re on our way to find out more.
2:01 PM: SFD has already closed the call. They’re working to clear the road and letting the Water Taxi shuttle through, but not other traffic.
2:14 PM: Flipped-car crash, as our photo (and the one Angela has posted in a comment below) shows. We’re told at the scene that the driver hit a parked car and flipped.
2:21 PM: Harbor is open again, police just told dispatch.
4:55 PM: SFD tells WSB that the driver, a 53-year-old woman, was in stable condition when taken to Harborview by AMR ambulance.
6:01 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, May 1st.

8:55 PM: Big emergency response on the northbound 1st Avenue South Bridge right now – originally dispatched as a “rescue extrication” but now being downsized. The traffic alert says this involves a collision toward the north end of the bridge. If you were headed that way, wait a while or try another route across the river.
9:04 PM: WSDOT says traffic is being diverted off the northbound bridge at Michigan, as the collision is just north of that exit. This was initially dispatched as a two-vehicle collision, with one reported to have flipped.
9:19 PM: We’ll follow up with SFD later but so far at least one person is reported injured, a woman believed to be in her 20s.
UPDATE FROM SFD: Four people were treated for injuries, according to SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo: A 26-year-old man, 44-year-old man, 60-year-old man, 20-year-old woman (who asked to be taken to a hospital), all stable.
ADDED THURSDAY AFTERNOON: SPD says today that the 26-year-old man – driver of the vehicle that flipped – was booked into jail for unlawful gun possession, after one was found in his car and he turned out to be a convicted felon.

2:31 PM: Avoid the 2200 block of Alki Avenue SW for a while. According to police/fire/dispatch communication, a driver hit a hydrant and that’s sent water over the street, taking it down to one lane. SPD is also being asked to block drivers from using Bonair to go downhill for now.
(Added, WSB photo of knocked-over hydrant)
2:36 PM: Update – SFD has asked SPD to “completely shut down Alki,” from the 1700 block.
2:57 PM: SFD also says it’s asked people to evacuate a building in the 2100 block of Bonair “as a precaution.” Radio communication suggested there’s concern about “erosion” from the rushing water (SFD is reported to have reduced the flow). We’re on our way to the area to try to find out more.
3:12 PM: SFD has closed out of the call. Ongoing communication between SPD and dispatch focuses on who’s going to clean up what an officer described as a “foot of mud … on Bonair and Alki.”
3:18 PM: Our crew just arrived and talked with SPU. Alki Avenue has reopened but Bonair is closed at Alki.
6:35 PM: We went through the area a little while ago and noticed the cleanup is well under way, with several types of city vehicles on site.
6:01 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, April 21st.
WEATHER & SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
The forecast for today: Cloudy, chance of afternoon rain, high in the 50s. (Possibly the 60s by Tuesday!) Sunrise 6:10 am, sunset 8:07 pm.
WEEKEND
*Weather permitting, SDOT tentatively plans to install jersey barriers for the West Marginal Way protected bicycle lane this weekend.
*In the SODO stadium zone, Mariners host Cardinals all weekend – 7:10 pm tonight, 6:40 pm Saturday, 1:10 pm Sunday.
*Second cruise-ship stop of the year is Saturday at Pier 66 downtown, same one as the first, NCL Norwegian Bliss.

Thanks to the texter who sent that photo. The Seattle Fire response for what’s described as an “encampment fire” on that slope over northbound I-5 has been affecting the interchange with the West Seattle Bridge. WSDOT says fire crews are “blocking the Spokane Street on-ramp to NB I-5,” so if you need to get to I-5, you might try it from points further north or south for a while. The eastbound Spokane Street Viaduct is backed up, as this framegrab from the traffic cam shows.

10:27 AM: Thanks for the tips about a traffic backup in the heart of The Junction. We went down to check it out and found the reason – repaving work in the outside westbound lane of SW Alaska between 42nd and California. An officer is there directing traffic. We’re checking with SDOT about project details.
3:26 PM: SDOT tells WSB this one lane on one block was all they were doing, and that it should be finished this afternoon – indeed, the traffic cam shows (framegrab above) that it is.

6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, April 17th. back to school for Seattle Public Schools and others that were out on break last week.
WEATHER & SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
The forecast for today: Showers, chance of pm thunderstorms, breezy, high in the low 50s. Sunrise 6:17 am, sunset 8:02 pm.
NEW SIGNAL
As noted on Friday, the new pedestrian-activated signal at 12th/Holden is operational.
TRANSIT
Metro – Regular schedule, but trip cancellations are still happening, so watch for alerts (if you’re not signed up to get them, check channels like this).
Water Taxi – Service resumes today after weekend break, with spring/summer schedule including Friday/Saturday late-night runs.
Washington State Ferries‘ Triangle Route continues on the 2-boat schedule; check here for alerts/updates and see Vessel Watch for boats’ locations. The Seattle-Bremerton run has a smaller boat because of the weekend Walla Walla incident, so that might mean some spillover to the Fauntleroy-Southworth run.
SPOTLIGHT TRAFFIC CAMERAS
Delridge cameras: Besides the one below (Delridge/Henderson), cameras are also up at Delridge/Genesee, Delridge/Juneau, Delridge/Orchard, and Delridge/Oregon.

High Bridge – the camera at the top:

High Bridge – the view from its southwest end (when SDOT points the 35th/Avalon/Fauntleroy camera that way):

Low Bridge – looking southwestward toward it:

1st Ave.

If you see a problem on the bridges/streets/paths/bay, please text or call us (when you can do it safely, and after you’ve reported to authorities). Thank you!
11:02 AM: The photo and report are just in via text:
This massive tree just fell across 48th Ave SW between Beach Dr and and Holly. Totally blocking street. It fell on a car that was driving up 48th but they survived because the top of the tree hit their car. They were lucky to have survived!
To report a road hazard/blockage on weekends/evenings, SDOT’s 24-hour line is 206-386-1218 (or call 911).
12:15 PM: As of 10 minutes ago, when we went by the west end of 48th, the street was still closed and work crews were in view.
4:50 PM: We finally got a chance to go back over to look; the street is open.
2:42 PM: SFD is asking for SPD traffic assistance in connection with what the dispatcher described as an “RV fire” in the 2200 block of SW Holden, which is just west of Delridge. We’re on our way to check it out; avoid the area in the meantime.
3:02 PM: Thanks to Shane for the photo above – our crew has had trouble finding the scene because it’s actually a block south of Holden. Our crew has since arrived and reports no one was hurt; police have asked dispatch to call for a tow truck. Here’s our photo of the aftermath:
3:16 PM: We’ll be checking with SFD regarding the cause; apparently not suspicious, as they did not send their investigator, and the call is completely closed. Here’s video Laurel recorded from a nearby apartment before SFD arrived.
4:36 PM: We asked Laurel if the RV had been in that spot a while; she said no, it wasn’t there even as of 1 pm today.
