West Seattle, Washington
27 Friday
With West Seattle Summer Fest approaching, the “no parking” signs are up in the heart of The Junction, so this afternoon we’re reminding you about the road-closure plan. First – note that the signs warn of parking restrictions on California SW starting as soon as Wednesday. The first street closure starts Thursday morning – that’ll be California north of SW Oregon and south of SW Genesee, the block where the main stage and beer garden will be set up Friday and Saturday (and the Farmers’ Market on Sunday). Then at 4 pm Thursday, the rest of the festival zone will close to traffic – California from Oregon to Edmunds and SW Alaska from 44th to 42nd. Metro will publish bus reroutes later this week. On Thursday evening, as setup proceeds, the streets will be open to foot traffic as usual for Summer Fest Eve – then the festival is officially on 1 pm-8 pm Friday, 10 am-8 pm Saturday, and 10 am-5 pm Sunday, with music running later on Friday and Saturday. WSB is a community co-sponsor of Summer Fest – see you there!
6:03 AM: Good morning. Welcome to Monday, July 10th.

Thanks to the neighbor who’s been keeping us informed with photos and updates from the scene of last night’s crash that took out a pole and power lines, cutting electricity to thousands. (Here’s our overnight/morning coverage.) Admiral Way has now reopened after a 14-hour closure to clean up the crash site – the pickup truck ended up at Aegis Living’s entrance – and replace the pole and lines. No serious injuries were reported. We don’t know the status of the driver, who was under investigation for DUI, but will follow up with police tomorrow. As readers have noticed, this is almost identical to an incident last September.

Those lane closures that were supposed to happen last night for West Seattle Bridge maintenance work didn’t happen after all, SDOT says, due to crew availability. So all the work is supposed to be done tonight. It’s scheduled to start as early as 9 pm and be completed no later than 5 am, with one lane open each way in the work zone

10:17 PM: A motorcycle rider will be taken to the hospital after a crash at 21st/Delridge. We don’t know any other details except that police and fire are on scene, and the injured rider is a man around 50. Avoid the area for a while.
11:19 PM: No further information on circumstances,, but police are reopening the roads at the scene. We’re checking with SFD on the rider’s condition.
ADDED WEDNESDAY: SFD says the rider was in critical condition when transported. We don’t have his name so can’t check for a condition update.
10:26 AM: I-5 southbound south of the West Seattle Bridge is still down two lanes because of emergency expansion-joint repairs, so if you’re headed to southbound I-5, catching it via Georgetown might be smarter, or wait a while to travel if you can. (Thanks to David for the tip.)

Nine months after the West Seattle Bridge reopened following its 2 1/2-year closure, no new problems, says SDOT. But it’s maintenance time, and some work postponed last month is now set to start at 9 pm tomorrow night. Here’s the SDOT announcement:
We are planning overnight lane closures on the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge to perform routine preventative maintenance this Tuesday and Wednesday. There are no problems with the bridge, and crews will be working to protect the interior of the bridge by applying waterproof sealant to access hatches along the surface of the bridge deck.
The closure will begin at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27 and end by 5 a.m. the following morning. If necessary, the closure will be repeated the following night (Wednesday, June 28). This work requires dry weather and is subject to change. The bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction overnight between State Route 99 and Delridge Way SW. All on- and off-ramps will remain open as normal.

Max sent that photo after spotting city workers today along Delridge between Dakota and Genesee, where multiple readers have noticed a section of southbound bus lane long blocked off. Will it finally be fixed? Yes, says SDOT, whose spokesperson Ethan Bergerson explained that what Max saw “was an SDOT crew meeting on location in preparation for upcoming repairs.” He added these details:
We expect to begin construction to repair the southbound bus lane of Delridge Way SW between SW Dakota St and SW Genesee within the next three weeks and complete the repairs by the end of August.
Vehicles will be rerouted to the eastern side of the street with at least one lane of travel in each direction when work is occurring. This detour will typically be in effect 24 hours a day from Thursdays through Sundays on the weeks when construction is occurring (there may be weeks when construction does not occur if crews are responding to other projects throughout the city). The sidewalks will remain open at all times.
This project will replace about 460 feet of concrete in the southbound bus lane and also repair a small number of damaged areas in the southbound general purpose lanes. Crews will demolish and remove the existing concrete panels, and repave them with full-depth concrete thick enough to withstand the anticipated bus traffic. This solution will last much longer than temporary asphalt patchwork, but also takes several weeks to complete.
We are also considering a small number of additional repairs in the northbound lanes. Any repairs in the northbound lanes would be completed sometime after the southbound repairs are completed (this has not been scheduled yet).
SDOT is partnering with King County Metro to fund this project. This block was not repaved as part of the recent RapidRide H project because at the time that project was being designed it was anticipated that Sound Transit would most likely rebuild this block as a part of their West Seattle light rail extension. However, we are performing these repairs now due to the deteriorated pavement conditions and because it now appears most likely that Sound Transit’s West Seattle light rail alignment would shift to another location.

Several readers have mentioned it’s slow going on the westbound West Seattle Bridge, east of 99 – and this is why: One of those periodic backups of port-bound trucks. So if you’re headed this way from off-peninsula, you might consider an alternate route.
