Just as the city encourages more businesses to use outdoor space to make things safer for customers and staff – one West Seattle restaurant’s outdoor area has been hit by theft. The photo is from Itto’s Tapas (California/Genesee), which texted the photo and reports, “Someone stolen a couple outdoor tables and chairs last night after midnight.” A police report has been filed (tracking # T20018446)..
Back in March 2019, we brought you first word that MOD Pizza planned a second West Seattle location, in Westwood Village. Tonight, we were driving through the shopping center and noticed people dining inside; stopped to inquire and learned it’s a “friends and family” test run, with the restaurant planning to officially open next Tuesday (June 30th). MOD’s first West Seattle location, at The Whittaker (4755 Fauntleroy Way SW), opened in February 2018. The Westwood location combines the spaces on the center’s west side that formerly held Giannoni’s Pizza and Baja Taco.

First, many have asked about Maharaja, which has been remodeled during its closure – here’s the news emailed to us today by Don Bogie:
The Maharaja will be open for delivery and takeout starting Saturday 6/13. The kitchen has been remodeled and is ready to go!! We could be open (today) but we are closed along with a large number of other WA restaurants in observance of the statewide #blacklivesmatter silent march and general strike.
Through our remodel we are having a tough time getting our phone lines working, please order through a service (DoorDash, Grubhub, Caviar etc…) or you can come to the front door and place your order!!! We look forward to feeding you and seeing you soon!!!!
Maharaja is at 4542 California SW. Hours will be 11 am-11 pm.

The café is at the now-busier-than-ever 5-way intersection, 3527 Chelan SW.
As reported here this morning, King County is now in “modified Phase 1” and that means some businesses can reopen if they choose to – including restaurants, who can have some indoor and outdoor table service. Here’s who we’ve heard from/about so far:
LUNA PARK CAFE: Open! (2918 SW Avalon Way)
SEATTLE FISH COMPANY: Open! (4435 California SW)
BOX BAR: Planning to open Saturday: “The Box Bar will be open for indoor dining at 25% capacity (15 guests) starting tomorrow Sat 6/6 from 4 PM-10 PM. Hours moving forward are subject to change so please check the website boxbarseattle.com” (California/Brandon)
OUNCES: “We’ve reopened our outdoor. We are following phase 1.5 guidelines from the state: no indoor seating, operating at 50% outdoor capacity, wearing a mask requested when inside the taproom, seating is spaced 6ft apart, no more than 5 people per table…etc. We are also asking customers to practice social distancing and help us by sanitizing their space before and after use (spray bottle supplied). We will continue our pickup and delivery options, expanded hours, and our food truck schedule can be found on our website www.ounceswestseattle.com.” (3809 Delridge Way SW)

LOCOL BARLEY AND VINE: Now “open 7 days a week from 4-8 now. Our patio is open, dine-in seating is available, and we still offer everything to go as well.” (35th/Kenyon)

REBELLYOUS NUGGETS AVAILABLE IN WEST SEATTLE: We noted last month that the “plant-based ‘chicken’ nuggets” startup in The Triangle was starting to sell retail, but at the time, no West Seattle outlet. That’s just changed – Rebellyous tells WSB that Wildwood Market in Fauntleroy (9214 45th Ave SW) is now carrying their nuggets.

OH’S SANDWICHES REOPENS: The proprietor of Oh’s Sandwiches (3217 California SW), Oanh Nguyen, emailed us over the weekend to say the shop is reopening today. Oh’s will be open 10 am-6 pm daily Mondays-Saturdays, closed Sundays. So many people have been asking about this restaurant, we wanted to get the news out as soon as possible – Lee’s Asian Restaurant (4510 California SW) emailed us this afternoon to say they’re reopening on Monday (June 1st)! Amy says they’re reopening “with our full menu and regular business hours, with takeout only. We look forward to serving our neighborhood again.” Hours will be 11 am-9:30 pm Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays; 11 am-10 pm Fridays and Saturdays; noon-9:30 pm Sundays; closed Tuesdays.
Thanks for the tips and pic! One month after we reported that The Original Bakery in Fauntleroy was gearing up to reopen, it’s happened. Today was the first day back for the beloved bakery, now equipped with a take-out window. The announcement:
This week we will be open for takeout with a limited menu of donuts and pastries. We will not be serving coffee or espresso yet. Our hours are from 9 am-3 pm Thursday through Saturday. Sorry, no telephone or online orders. We will operate similarly to a food truck to start, first come, first serve. When we sell out of items, we will be out for the day. We appreciate your patience as this process will move a bit slower than our regular service. We will take orders and contactless payment (credit card only) at the walk-up window. There will be a pick-up table at the far end door when your name is called.

The latest standalone Starbucks store to reopen in the area is the Admiral shop (41st SW/Admiral Way), which has been remodeled during its closure. “We are remodeled and brand new!! MATADOR REOPENING … for takeout and delivery, starting this Wednesday (May 27th). Hours will be Sunday – Thursday 4 pm – 10 pm, Friday 4 pm – 11 pm, Saturday 2 pm – 11 pm. Again this week, KBM Seattle and some of its chefs are making free meals available to anyone in need. Keith Mathewson sent the update for this afternoon/evening:
This week’s donation is headed up by The Roll Pod Indian Food Trucks and Bellevue restaurant. The menu is curried chicken with vegetables and spiced rice. Meals will be handed out between 4 pm and 6 pm Saturday.
By (tonight) the members of the kitchen will have made and donated over 4,500 meals. It appears that the number of people coming for meals is dropping from a high of 1200 meals per donation to between 500 to 600; however, the people who do come appear to be in greater need. The line now begins about one hour before we open. I am assuming that some people have been able to return to work but for the ones who haven’t, things are getting worse. We intend to continue for as long as I can finance the program; our costs are about $1.50 to $2/person. If you are not impacted and wish to help, I would like to encourage you to consider donating to the fund, no matter the amount.
Anyone who is impacted is welcome to come; no questions will be asked.

This week’s update from Keith Mathewson of KBM Seattle Commissary, whose resident chefs have been rotating in preparing weekly free meals for whoever shows up:
We will be giving away meals this week on Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm. Last week saw a low turnout with Mother’s Day. As a result we had extra food, therefore this week the menu will remain the same. We presently have meals planned for 500 people.
The aforementioned menu, from last week’s announcement, is “baked vegetarian Ziti with rosemary focaccia … made by West Of Chicago Pizza and Los Panes Bakery with the help of the staff at KBM,” which is at 5604 Delridge Way SW.
Talarico’s Pizza in The Junction – whose fans were alarmed by the papered-over windows during its current closure – is reopening. Ami at Talarico’s confirms that this Thursday (May 14th) is the day, and thereafter it will be open 7 days a week, noon-9 pm, offering beer, wine, and cocktails as well as food. You’ll be able to order online at talaricospizza.com or via the Heartland Guest app. Ami adds, “We look forward to seeing our community.”

Another West Seattle food-and-beverage business has launched in defiance of the coronavirus crunch.
Philip Sudore has opened The Spot West Seattle at 2920 SW Avalon Way, where Shack Coffeehouse closed six months ago.
You might know him already for his music, with the band Mercy Parker. Eventually, he hopes you’ll know him for a restaurant with a full bar, once COVID-19 is past – a tapas-style menu with craft cocktails and craft beer. But for now, “We have an amazing, dynamic, and fun waffle menu, plus great coffee and espresso.” (Scroll down this page to see that menu.)
The coffee is from K&F Roasters out of Portland – the award-winning Café Jondo, an organic fair-trade blend of African and South American coffees.
Current hours at The Spot are 6:30 am-4 pm weekdays, 7 am-4 pm Saturdays, 8 am-4 pm Sundays. (Post-pandemic, they’ll have evening hours too.)

This past Monday, C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) reopened, and today we heard from two more coffee shops – Olympia Coffee (3840 California SW) also reopened on Monday, we learned today, 7 am-5 pm daily. And we got word that Uptown Espresso in The Junction (California/Edmunds) plans to reopen next Monday (May 11th), with hours 8 am-3 pm.
Also, if your favorite restaurant has a full liquor license, you might soon be able to get a takeout pre-mixed cocktail with your food, if they choose to take advantage of this newly announced state rule change.

The main course options are crab benedict, pulled pork benedict, baked french toast, steak and eggs, or crab cakes. With each benedict we have the components and recipe for making hollandaise at home so that it doesn’t get salmonella in transit.
