WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Restaurant furniture stolen

Just as the city encourages more businesses to use outdoor space to make things safer for customers and staff – one West Seattle restaurant’s outdoor area has been hit by theft. The photo is from Itto’s Tapas (California/Genesee), which texted the photo and reports, “Someone stolen a couple outdoor tables and chairs last night after midnight.” A police report has been filed (tracking # T20018446)..

BIZNOTE: Westwood Village’s MOD Pizza ready to open

Back in March 2019, we brought you first word that MOD Pizza planned a second West Seattle location, in Westwood Village. Tonight, we were driving through the shopping center and noticed people dining inside; stopped to inquire and learned it’s a “friends and family” test run, with the restaurant planning to officially open next Tuesday (June 30th). MOD’s first West Seattle location, at The Whittaker (4755 Fauntleroy Way SW), opened in February 2018. The Westwood location combines the spaces on the center’s west side that formerly held Giannoni’s Pizza and Baja Taco.

As reported here this morning, King County is now in “modified Phase 1” and that means some businesses can reopen if they choose to – including restaurants, who can have some indoor and outdoor table service. Here’s who we’ve heard from/about so far:

LUNA PARK CAFE: Open! (2918 SW Avalon Way)

SEATTLE FISH COMPANY: Open! (4435 California SW)

BOX BAR: Planning to open Saturday: “The Box Bar will be open for indoor dining at 25% capacity (15 guests) starting tomorrow Sat 6/6 from 4 PM-10 PM. Hours moving forward are subject to change so please check the website boxbarseattle.com” (California/Brandon)

We are following phase 1.5 guidelines from the state: no indoor seating, operating at 50% outdoor capacity, wearing a mask requested when inside the taproom, seating is spaced 6ft apart, no more than 5 people per table…etc. We are also asking customers to practice social distancing and help us by sanitizing their space before and after use (spray bottle supplied). We will continue our pickup and delivery options, expanded hours, and our food truck schedule can be found on our website www.ounceswestseattle.com.” (3809 Delridge Way SW)

MIOPOSTO: Planning to open Wednesday (6/10), with this brand-new patio as well as indoor dining:

BUSINESS UPDATES: 3 food/beverage notes

First, two reopenings:

And a followup:

REBELLYOUS NUGGETS AVAILABLE IN WEST SEATTLE: We noted last month that the “plant-based ‘chicken’ nuggets” startup in The Triangle was starting to sell retail, but at the time, no West Seattle outlet. That’s just changed – Rebellyous tells WSB that Wildwood Market in Fauntleroy (9214 45th Ave SW) is now carrying their nuggets.

BIZNOTES: Oh’s Sandwiches; Pegasus Book Exchange

Two business notes this morning – a restaurant reopening and a retail update:

REOPENING: Lee’s Asian Restaurant in the West Seattle Junction

So many people have been asking about this restaurant, we wanted to get the news out as soon as possible – Lee’s Asian Restaurant (4510 California SW) emailed us this afternoon to say they’re reopening on Monday (June 1st)! Amy says they’re reopening “with our full menu and regular business hours, with takeout only. ALSO OPEN AGAIN: The Original Bakery

Thanks for the tips and pic! One month after we reported that The Original Bakery in Fauntleroy was gearing up to reopen, it’s happened. Today was the first day back for the beloved bakery, now equipped with a take-out window. The announcement:

This week we will be open for takeout with a limited menu of donuts and pastries. We will not be serving coffee or espresso yet. Our hours are from 9 am-3 pm Thursday through Saturday. Sorry, no telephone or online orders. We will operate similarly to a food truck to start, first come, first serve. When we sell out of items, we will be out for the day. We appreciate your patience as this process will move a bit slower than our regular service. We will take orders and contactless payment (credit card only) at the walk-up window. There will be a pick-up table at the far end door when your name is called.

The Original Bakery is at 9253 45th SW. (And of course we’re updating our ongoing restaurants/food/beverage-businesses list.)

NEED FOOD? Donated meals available today at KBM Seattle

Again this week, KBM Seattle and some of its chefs are making free meals available to anyone in need. Keith Mathewson sent the update for this afternoon/evening:

This week’s donation is headed up by The Roll Pod Indian Food Trucks and Bellevue restaurant. The menu is curried chicken with vegetables and spiced rice. Meals will be handed out between 4 pm and 6 pm Saturday.

By (tonight) the members of the kitchen will have made and donated over 4,500 meals. It appears that the number of people coming for meals is dropping from a high of 1200 meals per donation to between 500 to 600; however, the people who do come appear to be in greater need. The line now begins about one hour before we open. I am assuming that some people have been able to return to work but for the ones who haven’t, things are getting worse. We intend to continue for as long as I can finance the program; our costs are about $1.50 to $2/person. If you are not impacted and wish to help, I would like to encourage you to consider donating to the fund, no matter the amount.

Anyone who is impacted is welcome to come; no questions will be asked.

KBM is at 5604 Delridge Way SW. And a reminder, some of the KBM-based businesses are also selling from a streetfront window, listed on our ongoing West Seattle list.

FOOD/DRINK NOTES: Holiday weekend and beyond

3 food/drink notes for Memorial Day weekend and beyond (in addition to our ongoing food-and-beverage-businesses list):

GRILL-AT-HOME SPECIAL: Getaways might be out of the question, but – depending on the weather – you might mull grilling. Toward that end, Phoenecia in The Junction (4717 42nd SW) is offering a grill-at-home dinner for 2, available Sunday & Monday, $59 – four courses including warm pita with a trio of spreads, Lebanese Malfouf Salad, a trio of kabobs, and berry cheesecake. Text 206-250-5482 to pre-order. (Anybody else with Memorial Day specials? Let us know!)

TAT’S TRUCK ADDS A DAY: As reported back on Tuesday, Tat’s Truck will launch weekend visits at Hans VW Repair (35th/Graham) this weekend. Since that first report, they’ve decided to be there Sundays as well as Saturdays.

DONATION DAY AT OUNCES: Happening the day after Memorial Day, at Ounces (3809 Delridge Way SW):

Buy beer and food to-go and help those in need!

On Tuesday, May 26th from 4-7 pm, we ask you to bring your business to Ounces so we can all come together and support the West Seattle Food Bank.

On this day, both Ounces & Beanfish Food Truck will donate 10% of all sales back to the West Seattle Food Bank. Not only will you be supporting local business, but you can help feed others in our community as well!

Want to help more?! Bring your canned good donations to Ounces and we’ll deliver them to the food bank!

We understand not everyone is comfortable venturing out at this time, therefore we are also including any sales to our online website or digital gift card purchases made on this day.

NEED FOOD? KBM Commissary’s weekly free-meals plan for Saturday

This week’s update from Keith Mathewson of KBM Seattle Commissary, whose resident chefs have been rotating in preparing weekly free meals for whoever shows up:

We will be giving away meals this week on Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm. Last week saw a low turnout with Mother’s Day. As a result we had extra food, therefore this week the menu will remain the same. We presently have meals planned for 500 people.

The aforementioned menu, from last week’s announcement, is “baked vegetarian Ziti with rosemary focaccia … made by West Of Chicago Pizza and Los Panes Bakery with the help of the staff at KBM,” which is at 5604 Delridge Way SW.

RESTAURANTS: Talarico’s reopening

Talarico’s Pizza in The Junction – whose fans were alarmed by the papered-over windows during its current closure – is reopening. Ami at Talarico’s confirms that this Thursday (May 14th) is the day, and thereafter it will be open 7 days a week, noon-9 pm, offering beer, wine, and cocktails as well as food. You’ll be able to order online at talaricospizza.com or via the Heartland Guest app. Ami adds, “We look forward to seeing our community.”

P.S. We’ll be adding this to the 140+-venue “who’s open” list of restaurants/beverage businesses that we’ve been keeping for almost two months now. Got change(s)? westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!

YOU CAN HELP! Support local chef’s free-meal program by having him coach you through Saturday night dinner

Despite pandemic-related health and business challenges, many local restaurateurs are giving generously to the community – with your partnership, when possible. Here’s an upcoming opportunity to support one such effort – while you get a cooking lesson AND gourmet dinner. The announcement:

Brian Clevenger, owner of General Harvest Restaurants, is partnering with local startup Zeacon to welcome people into his home kitchen for a virtual cooking experience on Saturday, May 16th at 7 pm.

Participants will learn how to make one of his signature pasta dishes and get exclusive access to the tips and tricks that make his cooking exceptional. Proceeds go toward providing free meals served out of Brian Clevenger’s West Seattle restaurant, Haymaker. Anyone in need of a meal who’s been affected by the current crisis can call ahead at 206-946-6994 for pickup, no questions asked. Haymaker’s daily menu can be found (here).

Brian Clevenger’s Zeacon LIVE experience is available for purchase here:

As explained at that link, the price includes the ingredients for the pasta dish. Clevenger, who lives in West Seattle, also operates Raccolto on the north side of The Junction. (2019 photo courtesy Haymaker)

BIZNOTE: What was The Shack is now The Spot

Another West Seattle food-and-beverage business has launched in defiance of the coronavirus crunch.

Philip Sudore has opened The Spot West Seattle at 2920 SW Avalon Way, where Shack Coffeehouse closed six months ago.

You might know him already for his music, with the band Mercy Parker. Eventually, he hopes you’ll know him for a restaurant with a full bar, once COVID-19 is past – a tapas-style menu with craft cocktails and craft beer. But for now, “We have an amazing, dynamic, and fun waffle menu, plus great coffee and espresso.” (Scroll down this page to see that menu.)

The coffee is from K&F Roasters out of Portland – the award-winning Café Jondo, an organic fair-trade blend of African and South American coffees.

Current hours at The Spot are 6:30 am-4 pm weekdays, 7 am-4 pm Saturdays, 8 am-4 pm Sundays. (Post-pandemic, they’ll have evening hours too.)

Circa: Welcoming a new West Seattle Blog sponsor!

Today we welcome Admiral District restaurant Circa as a new WSB sponsor. When a local business joins the WSB sponsor team, they get the opportunity to let you know what they offer – here’s what Circa wants you to know:

Circa (2605 California SW) has been open for more than 20 years. They’re offering take-out breakfast, lunch, and dinner, 7 days a week – the first time in the restaurant’s history that they’ve offered breakfast! They explain that instead of offering a more-limited menu for this challenging time, they decided to just go for it – rolling up their sleeves and doing everything they can. And of course they’re offering the favorites that Circa has been serving for years.

Co-proprietors Gretchen and Bill Evans also want to thank everyone for the tremendous support!

If you see this before Mother’s Day, here’s what’s on the brunch menu:

*House-made bagels with lox, herbed cream cheese, capers, red onions, and 2 eggs – $17
*Dungeness crab cakes with dressed greens, fruit, and 2 eggs – $19
*Fruit and yogurt platter with mint and honey – $13
*Regular menu available as well, along with mimosa and Bloody Mary kits

And for dinner:

*Red wine and thyme-braised lamb shank with rainbow carrots and mashers – $40
*Fresh, wild-caught halibut poached with basil lemon butter sauce, rice and veggies – $32
*Regular menu available as well, along with wine, beer, and cocktail kits

For dessert –

*Lemon pudding cake
*Guittard chocolate double-layer cake

Calling ahead is suggested, but not required – 206-923-1102. Hours are on their website.

We thank Circa for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

RESTAURANTS/BEVERAGE BUSINESSES: 2 more West Seattle reopenings. Plus, a change in cocktail rules

More updates to our ongoing list of West Seattle restaurants and beverage businesses open for your food/drink pickup and/or delivery needs: Two more coffee shops. This past Monday, C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) reopened, and today we heard from two more coffee shops – Olympia Coffee (3840 California SW) also reopened on Monday, we learned today, 7 am-5 pm daily. And we got word that Uptown Espresso in The Junction (California/Edmunds) plans to reopen next Monday (May 11th), with hours 8 am-3 pm.

Also, if your favorite restaurant has a full liquor license, you might soon be able to get a takeout pre-mixed cocktail with your food, if they choose to take advantage of this newly announced state rule change.

Updates for our list? westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!

MOTHER’S DAY: West Seattle restaurant specials, updated

Readers have asked about special take-out meals for Mother’s Day this Sunday (May 10th). We in turn issued an open invitation to restaurants to tell us what they’re offering. (updated) Here’s what we have so far:

ITTO’S TAPAS: “We’re offering a Mother’s Day meal for 2 at $90. Lamb shank with seasonal roasted veggies, 3 jumbo prawns, Arugula salad with manchego, Flan for dessert, and a bottle of Spanish cava. Preorder via email. ittostapasws@gmail.com

ENDOLYNE JOE’S: Offering “a special ‘Mama’s Day Brunch Kit’ for families of four and up, ready-to-reheat at home for Mother’s Day brunch … choose from Three Little Pigs Strata with ham, sausage, bacon and cheddar cheese or Spring Vegetable Strata with asparagus, bell pepper, cauliflower, and brie cheese, plus Cherry Crumble Coffee-Cake, Fruit Cocktail with melons, pineapple, and berries and cream cheese yogurt dip and a Mixed Green Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette … add a ‘Mom-osa’ Kit featuring a Bottle of Bubbles and Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice for an additional $25.” Order by phone, 206.937.5637, by Friday at 3 pm. “Each Brunch Kit is $60 plus tax and will include reheating instructions. Pickup is on Saturday, May 9.”

(added 11 am) PHOENECIA: Thanks to commenter Erica for mentioning this; we’ve since heard directly from the restaurant, which sent this image of the special 4-course Mother’s Day dinner menu and how to order.

(added Thursday) ARTHUR’S: “We’ve got several meal kits as well as 3-course pre made meals that are finished at home. Kits are a 12 oz ribeye steak, lamb with cherry glaze, or salmon. Our 3-course meal includes a choice of appetizer with a salad, assorted fresh baked croissants and house-made jam with whipped butter, or our smoked trout crostini. The main course options are crab benedict, pulled pork benedict, baked french toast, steak and eggs, or crab cakes. With each benedict we have the components and recipe for making hollandaise at home so that it doesn’t get salmonella in transit. We’ve been hearing from everyone how much they love our benedicts so this will be the standard for weekend brunch during the closure and beyond! Lastly, we have kids meals of a classic brekkie, baked french toast, or mac & cheese. Kits and coursed-out meals are $32 and kids’ meals are $8. We ask that orders be placed by Saturday morning at noon so we can get everything prepared and scheduled for pickup by Sunday.” 206-829-8235

(added Thursday) JET CITY BEIGNET: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Chef Michael Poole of West Seattle’s Hot Chocolat to offer you these unique, locally-crafted gift boxes mom will adore! Just visit our web shop, select your desired beignet box and add the artisan chocolate option of your choice. You can also add a bag of JCB custom small-batch coffee blend by Middle Fork Roasters – specially priced for Mother’s Day! Gift Boxes will be available for pick-up on Sunday, May 10th @ 4611 36th Ave SW. In order to limit crowds, there will be designated pick-up times (ranging from 9am – noon) according to the first letter of the purchaser’s last name.”
