WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Some vendors didn’t make it out last week because of the snowstorm’s aftermath, but the Farmers’ Market is expected to be back to full strength today, 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska. Here’s today’s fresh sheet; among other things, it says tulips are back (we photographed them this time last year).

ONE MORE SHOW FOR “AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS”: Last chance to get your delayed-holiday entertainment on! (Or, to simply see a good show.) Twelfth Night Productions (WSB sponsor) has one more performance of “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” 3 pm today at Youngstown Arts Center; tickets are available online or at the door. (To see what else is happening today/tonight, see the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.)

Two things that were supposed to happen in West Seattle last Sunday but didn’t, because of the snow, ARE happening today:
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET – Back after an extremely rare cancellation. 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska. Here’s the link to the latest Ripe ‘n’ Ready Fresh Sheet.
ADMIRAL SINGS CHRISTMAS – Feel like you missed out on the usual dose of Christmas music because of being snowbound? This West Seattle holiday-singalong tradition was postponed a week – and you’re welcome to join in at 4 pm today at Admiral Congregational Church, California/Hill (here’s a map). Read more about it here.
#1 – If you still suspect snow is swamping a storm drain near you, Seattle Public Utilities‘ Andy Ryan offers one more tidbit for finding it:
In general, most drains are located at natural low points along roadways or at the curb around intersections. Also, if someone is walking along a road, they might be able to get a sense of where the lowest area might be (at the bottom of a hill, at a dip in the road, next to a curb in a parking lot that collects water.
#2 – Yes, the West Seattle Farmers’ Market will resume tomorrow (after missing last week), 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska. WSFM management notes it was the first time in FIFTEEN YEARS they decided to cancel a market for “scary weather.” (If you are a WSB newcomer, note that we always publish the link to the latest “Ripe and Ready” Farmers’ Market list early Sunday morning, for WSFM shoppers’ convenience.)
#3 – Guess what – Tamsen in Morgan Junction sent this follow-up on the garden gnome (here’s yesterday’s look): “My garden gnome is telling me it’s safe to go out ‘there’ now. I’m off to deliver some cookie and fudge trays, two days late and shop for some deals”:

We’re leaving WSB Cave (er, HQ) for a while ourselves.
No winter break for the West Seattle Farmers’ Market – it’s continuing year-round, and new additions pop up each week throughout the year. Here’s today’s list of what’s new and what’s fresh; the Farmers’ Market is open 10 am-2 pm, and those first couple hours are just the prelude to the first Hometown Holidays Sunday fun, Santa photos and all.
Time for the weekly Ripe ‘n’ Ready list from the West Seattle Farmers’ Market — and the “wild mushroom” category includes black truffles. WSFM is open 10 am-2 pm. 44th/Alaska (same place where we hope to see you at the West Seattle Tree Lighting at 5 pm next Saturday!).
Four days till Thanksgiving; unique ingredients await you at today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm. Click ahead to see the list of what’s new today, and what else is fresh:Read More
Brussels sprouts on the stalk! That’s one of the newest items you might find at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market today, according to the “ripe ‘n’ ready” fresh sheet (see the whole list here) – 10 am-2 pm, southeast corner of 44th/Alaska in The Junction.
Sunday morning’s here, so it’s time for the link to the latest “ripe and ready” list of what you’ll find at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market – 10 am-2 pm, SE corner of 44th/Alaska.
The pic at left is a hint … kiwis are part of what’s on this week’s fresh list; see the entire list here. Remember, West Seattle Farmers’ Market is year-round now, so today and every Sunday, you’ll see it 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska in The Junction.
NIA CLASS TO BENEFIT NORTHWEST HOPE AND HEALING: At 10 this morning at Youngstown Arts Center, you can multitask by working out while helping breast-cancer patients: The NiaDivas are presenting their second annual Nia breast-cancer-benefit class: Proceeds go to West Seattle-based Northwest Hope and Healing. The class will be led by Lesley Tinker; the fee is $15, with $5 raffle tickets offered (raffle items include lingerie and a tote bag). Read more about it here.
FARMERS’ MARKET TODAY: Starting right when the West Seattle Farmers’ Market opens at 10, and continuing till the pumpkins run out, WSFM managers say: “Folks are encouraged to use paint, glitter, feathers, glue, leaves and all types of accessories to make the scariest and most beautiful pumpkins on the planet. All pumpkins and supplies will be provided.” The market’s open 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska; also, as always, here’s your Sunday morning link to the weekly “fresh sheet” of what’ll be on sale there.
FARMERS’ MARKET: Goat chops and “fried chicken” wild mushrooms – just two of the items on the long list of what’s fresh at West Seattle Farmers’ Market today (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska) – see the list here.
FAUNTLEROY FALL FESTIVAL: One of the biggest events of the year, in the neighborhood that’s got a lot more going on than a ferry dock and megapark. As the FFF page on fauntleroy.net puts it, “free activities, cheap eats, and beautiful fall weather – guaranteed!” Pony rides and a dance performance are among the activities. It’s all happening in three close-together venues – Fauntleroy Church and YMCA (WSB sponsors) and the schoolhouse across the street. 2-6 pm; here’s a map.
That’s not all that’s going on today – more West Seattle events (including the AfterGlow shopping extravaganza and West Side Presbyterian‘s open house), in the Weekend Lineup.
Wild mushrooms are among the new items on the Ripe ‘n’ Ready “fresh sheet” for today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm 44th/Juneau; you can see the full list here.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Sunday morning means the weekly link to the Ripe ‘n’ Ready fresh sheet listing some of what you can expect to find at WSFM, 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska. Here’s the link.
ANIMAL BLESSING #2: First one happened Saturday at The Mount; today, a big outdoor event at the West Seattle High School parking lot, starting at noon, presented by neighboring St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, and featuring the Humane Society MaxMobile with adoptable pets.
MORE: Here’s the direct link to our West Seattle Weekend Lineup Sunday list – with info on today’s other highlights (including Holy Rosary’s annual Alumni Sunday, the Seattle CROP Walk, Ciderpress in Delridge, and a Music Northwest concert).
What’s an aprium? Find out at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market today (44th/Alaska, 10 am-2 pm); it’s one of the items on this week’s Ripe ‘n’ Ready “fresh sheet.”
The Neighborhood Farmers’ Market Alliance, which manages the West Seattle Farmers’ Market among others, says not only will WSFM be year-round again this year, it also will keep its regular hours throughout the year (winter hours last year were 11 am-2 pm, but this year, Janet Hurt just confirmed, it’ll keep the 10 am-2 pm schedule every Sunday, all seasons).
The car show‘s not the only event in The Junction today. Here are 2 more reminders:
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: As always, Sunday morning means we link to the latest “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” fresh sheet highlighting what to look for at the Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska): Check it out here.
CUPCAKES FOR CORA: We first told you about Cora (photo left) a few days ago: She’s a West Seattle 4-year-old who just started preschool — and is fighting a rare cancer called Wilms’ Tumor; she’s already been through surgery and is now receiving chemotherapy. This afternoon in the Seattle Lutheran High School gym (4141 41st SW; here’s a map) 2:30-5:30 pm, you’re invited to “Cupcakes for Cora,” a fundraising – and just plain fun – event to help Cora and her family, including a silent auction as well as those cupcakes. It’s a drop-in event, so stop by whenever you can make it.
Three notes about today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market: First, if you grow fruit and/or vegetables, bring some to the market today, to “Share the Bounty”> via Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle, which will donate it to the White Center Food Bank (which also serves part of West Seattle). Second – it’s tomato-tasting day, starting at 11 am (one hour after the market opens). Third – here’s our regular weekly link to the Ripe ‘n’ Ready “fresh sheet.”
ALKI “CAR-FREE DAY” TODAY: As per beaucoup previous mentions – noon-6 pm, no driving on Alki between California Way/Harbor and Alki/63rd except for the Water Taxi shuttle, the 56 bus (here’s one reroute alert), and a few exceptions spelled out in the official city advisory; parking restrictions (no parking between Maryland/Harbor and 63rd/Alki) kick in two hours earlier, so they’re in effect 10 am-6 pm. We will be posting frequent updates from Alki starting around 10, so you can check here for the latest report before you go. Lots of activities planned, and remember the Cones for Kids fundraiser at Alki Bathhouse (planned before the Car-Free Day was scheduled, so they’re really hoping it’ll be a fundraising boon and not a boondoggle), 1-4 pm.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Happening 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska as always. Here’s our weekly link to the latest “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” fresh sheet, listing what you can expect to find.
POOL FINALE: Today’s the last 2008 day for Colman Pool on the Lincoln Park shoreline. (Here’s our report on its first day; seems like minutes ago instead of months.) Today’s schedule, from the Colman brochure: Lap Swim noon-2:45 pm, Public Swim 3-4:45 pm, Lap Swim 5-7 pm.
More of today’s options are listed in the latest West Seattle Weekend Lineup.
There’s more tree fruit on the citywide “what’s new” list for farmers’ markets this week, including today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska). Check it out here (and let us know if you encounter any surprise finds!).
The organization that runs 7 farmers’ markets including ours says this week’s highlights include several varieties of tree fruit, plus cabbage, and more … here’s the link to the “ripe ‘n’ ready” list. The West Seattle Farmers’ Market is open 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska.
Sunday morning means of course we link you to the “ripe ‘n’ ready” list of what you will likely find at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market; remember it’s the citywide list, so some items are labeled as available only at other markets. But you never know when you’ll find a surprise, as did WSB contributor Christopher Boffoli last week (see comments here) – black locust honey. After reading his comment, we rushed out and got some too (our jar, shown at left); here’s where it’s from. Let us know if you find surprises; 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska.
It’s our Sunday morning tradition – this week’s “fresh sheet” for citywide farmers’ markets, including West Seattle (10 am-2 pm today, 44th/Alaska) – here’s what’s on it right now:Read More
