West Seattle, Washington
29 Sunday
That’s the walking map for tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm at more than two dozen local venues. You’ll find art previews at wsartwalk.com, and we’ve heard directly from some of the venues/artists too:
‘BRIDGING THE GAP’ AT HOTWIRE: As previewed here last night – the first of several summertime events in honor of the 30th anniversary of the high-level West Seattle Bridge.
It’s at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) in collaboration with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society/Log House Museum, whose Bob Carney, exhibit volunteer, and Sarah Baylinson, museum manager, were at Hotwire last night to put up the exhibit. (4410 California SW)
CUSTOM iPHONE AMPLIFIERS: Stylish and West Seattle-made, amply explained on the Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) website – this is just one of the one-of-a-kind creations:
Creator Fritz Rud will “make his worldwide debut,” Click! says, at the shop during Art Walk tonight.
WEST SEATTLE GARDEN TOUR POSTER ARTIST: Sue Madill, whose design won this year’s WSGT poster-art contest, is the featured artist at Windermere West Seattle. (4526 California SW)
WINE PARTY AND ART … at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor), with live music by Choro Tocando and art by Bill Reiswig, 7-9 pm. (5612 California SW)
ART WALK AT SHADOWLAND: Meet artist Bethany Alsin. (4458 California SW)
Also today/tonight:
LOW TIDE WITH BEACH NATURALISTS! Today, you’ll find Seattle Aquarium volunteer beach naturalists out right now, until 1:30 pm, at Constellation and Lincoln Parks. (Low tide, at 10:56 am, is -2.6 feet – that’s quite low, and the next three days will be lower still.)
FIREFIGHTER STORY TIME: 11 am, Southwest Library, one of the popular events with Seattle Fire Department members reading to little ones. (35th/Henderson)
WATCHING THE WORLD CUP: The international soccer championship series starts today, and West Seattle venues who’ve let us know they’re showing the games are The Bridge in Morgan Junction, Celtic Swell on Alki, and West Seattle Brewing in The Triangle. Anyone else? editor@wsb.blackfin.biz – let us know!
NORTHWEST WINE ACADEMY TURNS 10: It’s the 10th anniversary of the Northwest Wine Academy on the north end of the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) campus and the celebration coincides with the spring release of new wines, which you can taste and purchase during 2-7 pm events today, tomorrow, and Saturday. Details in our calendar listing. (6000 16th SW)
MORE FOR TODAY/TONIGHT … on the calendar.
6:42 PM: Thanks to the folks at CAPERS in The Junction for sending a photo of Lisa DeFaccio “showing her fabulous water forms – do not miss.” Don’t let the natural water forms falling from the sky keep you at home (it’s lighter than it was earlier!) during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – lots of places and artists to check out (see the list/map/previews on the official WSAW website) between now and 9 pm.
ADDED 9:57 PM: We stopped at HomeStreet Bank in The Junction, where 17-year-old artist Charles Lenny was featured tonight:
The Art Walk website preview notes that he’s a Chief Sealth International High School senior who works mostly in watercolor layered with ink – and has work on display elsewhere, too. Next Art Walk will be June 12th.
West Seattle Art Walk – under way until 9 pm – extends beyond The Junction:
Our two stops tonight are reminders of that – and they are steps away from each other, just north of Morgan Junction. First we visited West Seattle Cellars (6026 California SW), where co-proprietor Jan Martindale is the featured artist. Her photographs are from her travels to Myanmar (Burma), as explained on the WSAW website. Thursdays are also the weekly nights for free tastings at WSC, and tonight they’re focusing on wines from the south of France.
Just to the south, at 6040 California SW, West Seattle Office Junction (WSB sponsor) is officially celebrating its new, larger location:
WSOJ is West Seattle’s only coworking-space provider. Tonight they’re showing the work of Cherylin Andre and James Zetterberg, along with celebrating the new space’s grand opening. Still time to get out into the night and make some stops, whether these or others in The Junction or Admiral – see the official map/venue list in the right sidebar of the official WSAW website.
7:31 PM: Had dinner already? Interested in a walk? Head out and wander a few stops on this month’s West Seattle Art Walk, on until 9 pm – first month it’s lighter later, thanks to Daylight Saving Time. Stop by the new location of West Seattle Office Junction (WSB sponsor), our area’s only coworking space (what you see above is just a small part of it) – 6040 California SW, and two artists. (added) Here they are – Cherylin Andre:
And James Zetterberg:
See the venue list/map in our West Seattle Thursday preview.
10:30 PM: Adding photos from our stops in The Junction, where Merryweather Books featured watercolors by Rebecca Rain, wearing the coolest hair decoration we saw all night:
Right across California, Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) was the place to meet Megan Auman (whose entrepreneurial workshop Friday night is sold out!):
At Twilight Gallery and Boutique, the group show In This Place opened tonight – local artist Kelda Martensen is one of five artists whose work is showcased:
Read more about it on Twilight’s website. And right around the corner at Easy Street Records, Heidi Barack‘s show opened tonight:
Read about the show here. And remember that most participating businesses’ shows are up all month, so even if you didn’t get out to see the art tonight, be on the lookout throughout March.
Thanks to Alki photographer David Hutchinson for yet another wonderful West Seattle view – the colorful sunrise, through the recently installed Luna Girls on Alki. Speaking of art – it’s West Seattle Art Walk night!
That’s the list of Art Walk venues; click the image for a full-size view. You can preview artists and venues at the official WSAW website here – and here are a few we’ve received info about via e-mail (see the top of our calendar page for information on sending event info):

WINE CLUB AT C & P: Music, wine, appetizers at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor), 7-9 pm. (5612 California SW)
If you head out to West Seattle Art Walk venues tonight, you’ll see a whole lot of Valentine inspiration. That includes the Hope Lutheran Preschool student art show at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (4410 California SW; WSB sponsor). Above – the three-year-olds’ Valentine-related art project, explained on the official Art Walk website. Hotwire is one of 18 venues where it’s Art Walk night until 9 pm; the map and other previews are in our list of today’s highlights.
The holidays are peak season for people-watching, with more people hosting and mingling than any other time of the year. Above, Dinah Brein and Santa Claus in the lobby of the historic Admiral Theater, which Dinah manages, as people arrived for this afternoon’s free Christmas movie. Yes, as usual, The Admiral *WILL* be open on Christmas Day – movies and showtimes are listed on its website.
Next: From the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce holiday party at newly relocated The Bridge:
In our photo from last Thursday’s party – a full house! – West Seattle Food Bank executive director Fran Yeatts and Charles Morgan from Jackson, Morgan & Hunt PLLC (WSB sponsor). Chamber members can keep an eye on their e-mail for details of next month’s annual meeting, at which a new officer slate is up for election; Nancy Woodland of WestSide Baby is in the running for chair, succeeding Dave Montoure of West 5, who becomes past president.
And people we met during this month’s West Seattle Art Walk and peninsula-wide Holiday Bazaar:
The holiday party at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) was more than a celebration – it was a fun(draiser) too. Cleveland High School junior Diana Greenaway is working to get more life-saving LifeStraw portable filters to kids in Kenya. Diana’s project continues – read about it here (you can donate via that page, too).
At West 5 on Art Walk/Holiday Bazaar night, we found the HH Goods team:
If you didn’t catch them that night, you might have seen them at other bazaars this holiday season – their website lists other appearances including Highland Park and South Park.
And at Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor), we photographed Jessica Creager, one of the featured artists in this month’s Puny Picture Show:
Since many of the Art Walk displays are kept up throughout the month, that means lots of handmade local art is available as last-minute gifts – browse the official Art Walk website for some names, venues, and ideas. (Next Art Walk is January 9th, second Thursday as usual.)
(The meerkat is a “Puny Picture” you’ll see at Wallflower – info below)
Tonight’s the night! West Seattle Art Walk AND Shop Late Thursday AND multiple chances to do a good deed, all overlapping in some cases. Here are some of the highlights:
ART WALK EVERYWHERE: It’s the “Holiday Bazaar” expanded edition of Art Walk, 6-9 pm. And that makes it a gift shopper’s creative dream come true – with venues participating that aren’t even on the regular map, since it’s an all-out shopping event. Check wsartwalk.com for a sampling of artists/venues. And here are some of the previews we’ve received directly (and have been in our Holiday Guide):
BRUNETTE MIX HOLIDAY PARTY: It’s a party AND a benefit to ensure clean water for kids, at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, 6-9 pm. “It is specifically for LifeStraw, a very cool straw that cleans water before drinking, a very important thing to the kids in Kenya that will get them. Food, drinks and SWAG bags are part of the fun. We will also have chair massage and makeup applications.” (SW Oregon just west of California SW)
QUILT RAFFLE AT CAPERS: See the quilt at left? It’s a vintage Berl Baxter quilt, says Shari Sewell from Northwest Hope and Healing, which is raffling it tomorrow to raise money for NWHH’s breast-cancer-patient assistance fund. Tickets are $10, available on the NWHH website and 6-7 pm tonight at CAPERS, right before the winning ticket will be drawn at 7. CAPERS also has Cheryl Zahniser visiting for Art Walk. (4525 California SW)
PUNY PICTURE SHOW AND BENEFIT AT WALLFLOWER: 6-9 PM at Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor):
It’s NOT the little things… It’s the Puny Things! Our 5th Annual Puny Picture Show & Benefit is Here! The pictures are small, sure, but each are made with huge hearts. Supporting local artists, arts, community while enjoying Holiday Cheer with friends.

CLICK! TRUNK SHOW: At Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor), it’s trunk-show night “with Erica Gordon, a local blacksmith-turned-jeweler, and our own Frances Smersh, a jeweler-turned-painter” (work seen above) per co-proprietor John Smersh, 6-9 pm. (4540 California SW)
HABERDASHERY FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Fashion Event at Twilight Gallery, 6-9 pm. “Celebrate the holiday season with this preview and trunk show of the innovative designs of Jonquil & Mr. Black and Lovewell Couture, created by local designers Jordan Christianson and Brenda Bryan. Come join our holiday party and fashion show to find your holiday gifts by these local designers and our special guest jeweler Amy Clem of Dirty Pretty!” (4306 SW Alaska)
DENNY BOOK FAIR AT B&N: If you’ll be shopping tonight at Westwood Village, don’t miss the Denny International Middle School Book Fair at Barnes & Noble, 6-8 pm, a chance to have part of your book-purchase proceeds go to the school, and more: “Events include a scavenger hunt for students, student art displayed in the café, Denny orchestra ensemble playing music from 6:30-7, and open mic poetry, story reading in the café from 7-8pm. If you tell the clerk at check out, a portion of sales will go to Denny. Great way to get some holiday shopping done and support our school.”
BENEFIT EVENT AT OLA SALON: Thanks to Teri for this photo (added 7:51 pm) from the Transitional Resources benefit under way right now at Ola Salon in Luna Park:
That’s Emily from TR and Rachel from Ola. The event continues until 9 pm at the salon, with potential gift items including jewelry and fashion.
WEST SEATTLE THRIFTWAY TASTING: Can’t have a holiday party or big dinner for company without appetizers. Stop by 4-7 pm for ideas.
(Photo added 5 pm)
WS Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is at California/Fauntleroy/Morgan.
That’s just a sampling – get out and wander!
Pershing Hall – the new event venue created inside West Seattle’s historic American Legion Post 160 in The Triangle – is open right now for its first WS Art Walk night, featuring artist Jason Tang. Art Walk is on until 9 pm, and here’s the map/list showing who else is open:
Can’t decide where to go? Preview some of the artists via the official Art Walk website at wsartwalk.com.
We’re starting summer’s last West Seattle Art Walk – it’s year-round, but fall will arrive by the next one – on the north end of the map, at Alki Arts (2820 Alki SW). That’s co-proprietor Diane Venti in our photo with some of tonight’s featured work; also at her gallery, MoonGirl is making music tonight for a sunny evening.
This is also Alki Arts’ final West Seattle Art Walk, since its lease ends at month’s end, after what began as a “temporary” experiment turned into a three-year adventure.
Next, we’re heading south to the Admiral District. Tonight’s venue map/list is here, and Art Walk is on until 9 pm.
6:52 PM: At Mind Unwind (2206 California SW), you’ll meet Los Angeles artist Meagan Segal:
Her art tells a story, with flowers and with the inner workings of humans. Also featured tonight, Seattle artist Robroy Chalmers, and MU proprietor Krystal Kelley has booked live music too – classical guitarist Tim Scallon. Segal and Chalmers’ work together forms the show “Torn Inside,” and is explained in exhibition notes on the WSAW website: “Both look to the body as a source of visual beauty, physical pain, sexual pleasure and intellectual discovery. The images they make reflect a deep understanding of the human form, but both come to a far different end with their rendering of the form.”
Next – we continue southbound, to The Junction.
7:33 PM: Two Junction stops so far, and two more to go. Continuing the north-to-south trajectory, we dropped by Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (4410 California SW; WSB sponsor):
That’s photographer David Atkinson, showing work including incredible natural beauty.
At Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor), as reported here earlier this week, it’s the first book signing for Christopher Boffoli since his “Big Appetites” book hit the stores two days ago:
It’s a reception, too, and Click! also is featuring the realist paintings of Ann Duffy tonight.
8:41 PM: Our last two stops for the night, also in The Junction – Twilight Gallery (4306 SW Alaska), where Kristina Griffith was speaking about her “Iconic Women” work, an “illustrative portrait series celebrat(ing) Iconic Women and their diversity”:
Like many of the exhibits that are up on Art Walk night, you can visit the venue to see this one even afterward – it’ll be up all month. (By the way, you might recall that Griffith is one of the artists who did mural work on the vacant storefronts awaiting demolition on the other side of the California/Alaska intersection.)
Speaking of Mural – the lower floor of that building is home to Wallflower Custom Framing (4735 44th SW; WSB sponsor), where Sue Danielson‘s “Circularity Series” opened:
Next WS Art Walk is the second Thursday in October, so that’s October 10th – the venue list is only locked in one quarter at a time, so there’ll be some additions by then; keep an eye on wsartwalk.com.
Another big event tonight – and this one just happens once a month – West Seattle Art Walk! While WSAW official stops are all over the peninsula, and all on the map/list you can find here, you’ll find a few extras around The Junction – like Rose the Kale Lady, above, outside Shoofly Pie. She’s selling curly-leaf kale for $2, with proceeds to the West Seattle Food Bank, also the beneficiary of raffle tickets she’s selling. Rose’s watercolor paintings are on display too.
Further south on California, Easy Street Records is where you’ll find the wings mentioned in our headline – Happy Hour tonight in the café, per this photo tweeted earlier by ESR proprietor Matt Vaughan. Here’s the menu for this new Thursday night feature:
Around the corner at Twilight:
ADDED 8:19 PM: At Firefly Café and Creperie (California/Genesee; WSB sponsor), you’ll find Adriene Travis and his Kolorfusion photo/graphics art:
Next Art Walk: 6-9 pm September 12th.
We are continuing to count down to West Seattle Summer Fest (co-sponsored by WSB) next Friday/Saturday/Sunday (July 12-14) and to the night before, which is a street party all its own, once the central blocks of California and Alaska close for Summer Fest setup. Four things to note so far for Thursday night (and if you know of more, PLEASE let us know!):
–West Seattle Art Walk: 6-9 pm Thursday. See the summer venue list here, and artist previews on the official website
–Bubbleman outside Elliott Bay Brewery, a tradition (just confirmed today; checking on time)
–Yada Yada Blues Band outside West 5 around 7:30 pm (just confirmed today; p.s., AFTER Summer Fest, West 5 will be closed a few days for upgrades, so enjoy them extra in the week ahead)
–Bret Wiggins‘ Elvis stylings outside WSB sponsor La Romanza Bistro, first of 2 sets at 6:30 pm (as noted here last Wednesday)
The Junction streets close at 6 pm Thursday (July 11th). See you there on Thursday night AND for the ensuing three-day party (official Summer Fest website here; quick links in our Friday countdown report).
Thanks to CAPERS in The Junction for sharing that photo of work by their featured artist tonight during the West Seattle Art Walk, continuing till 9 pm: You might know Machel Spence best for her photography, but she also makes these beautiful boxes. CAPERS is at 4525 California SW, one of the many venues listed on the official WS Art Walk site. More to come!
It’s West Seattle Art Walk night till 9 pm – a beautiful night to traverse the peninsula and enjoy art at a variety of venues. One is Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, whose co-proprietor John Smersh shared the photo of their featured artist, Amy Huber, explaining:
Amy Huber is showing two bodies of work for this show: Organically Controlled. The images she’s posing in front of are her “sketchbook experiment”. Each pair of illustrations starts with an original drawing of something recognizable. The second drawing is an abstract started from where the ink bled through to the next page in her sketchbook.
She’s also showing her “Stress Paintings”. Amy works as a graphic designer at Nordstrom; when she’s trying to work out an idea at work she’ll often doodle absentmindedly on post-its. The patterns that emerged proved strong enough to be recreated as original paintings on canvases.
We’ve also made a stop in North Delridge – more on that in a moment. The map with all of this month’s venues can be found at wsartwalk.com.
ADDED 7:00 PM: Earlier today, we showed you around Youngstown Flats (see the photo tour here), a new WSB sponsor that’s leasing apartments in North Delridge. One big aspect of the project is its art – on every floor – and tonight the 14 artists and their work are being celebrated. One is Sara Everett, who also curated the work:
She posed for us in front of two of her pieces near the Dakota entry, both evoking greenery such as that you would find along nearby Longfellow Creek.
That’s Oval/Burst by Carla Grahn, which you’ll see right when you walk into the main entry. You can meet her and many of the other 13 artists, while touring the building and enjoying refreshments, till 9 tonight (26th and Dakota).
P.S. A note from Art Walk organizers:
This quarter the postcard/walking map and Art Walk Here posters feature the artwork of Emily Williamson. Emily was a West Seattle artist who passed away recently; her life touched the lives of many in our community. Her cheerful art is a reminder of her beautiful spirit and the brief time that we have to live and create!
Emily’s artwork was featured at Mind Unwind during March. Read remembrances of her life here.
Story and photos by Katie Meyer
Reporting for West Seattle Blog
Spring sunshine graced Thursday evening’s West Seattle Art Walk – above, at Firefly Café & Creperie (4160 California SW; WSB sponsor), featured artist Kimi J. Hansen-Chadwick (right) and proprietor Charell Estby. One of Hansen-Chadwick’s paintings, below:
Art appreciators at Firefly also enjoyed a sample of Zoka Coffee’s single origin Guatemalan “El Limonar” coffee, brewed with the “pour over” method by Zoka roaster Matreya:
Etsby was excited to take part in the West Seattle Art Walk — and to combine it with hosting a donation drive for WestSide Baby (packaged diapers, car seats). Per Etsby, two car seats were donated today. The bright red bin is ready and waiting in the cafe for the month of April:
Artists Judy Lane of Crooked Feather Girl Studio, and Rafael Caraballo also had their works on display at Firefly:
Meanwhile, more sunshine – and butterfly wings – glowed inside the newly opened West Seattle Office Junction (WSB’s coverage of opening day here). Entrepreneurs Stefan Hansmire and Christine Bartels welcomed visitors:
Featured artist Walter Scheirer (below) used off-tint house paint and salvaged/recycled doors in his work; this series is titled “Abstracts in Insects” with pieces depicting designs and patterns from butterfly wings. (Learn more about Scheirer’s artwork here.)
The West Seattle Art Walk is held every second Thursday, 6-9 pm, and you can preview venues and artists here.
Two scenes from The Junction during Thursday night’s West Seattle Art Walk – above, artist Michelle Salazar (left) at Wallflower Custom Framing (4735 42nd SW; WSB sponsor) with proprietor Courtney Sievertson. Wallflower is a fun stop on Art Walk night, not only because of the variety of artists showcased, but also because it’s a comfortable venue for the Art Walk reception-style experience, a sip, a snack, a chat with the artist … You can read about Michelle and her work here.
Not far away, at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor), metal/jewelry artist Sarah Loertscher was in the spotlight:
Click! shared the photo of Sarah, whose unique work is described here. It’ll be on display at Click! for two months, so if you missed Art Walk night, you can still view (and purchase!) the art – many of the participating venues keep the displays up all month.
Every second Thursday, it’s a celebration of art and community, at dozens of businesses, galleries, and other venues around the peninsula – the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. And there’s room for more, according to this WSAW announcement:
The West Seattle Art Walk committee is currently putting out a call to area businesses interested in participating in the monthly Art Walk for the second quarter of 2013. Art Walk is an evening community event on the second Thursday of each month, including locations across the West Seattle peninsula. Requirements for Art Walk hosts include procuring an artist, featuring their work, and committing to being open during Art Walk for the 3 months of the quarter they are signed up for. Interested? Click here for an application, or e-mail wsartwalk@gmail.com for more information. Deadline for participation is March 8.
Note that this is *not* a call for artists, but if you *are* an artist interested in participating, you are urged to contact participating businesses (listed at wsartwalk.com).
The next Art Walk is March 14th; if your venue signs up for second-quarter participation, that would start with the April 11th WSAW.
Alki Arts is always a hot spot on the West Seattle Art Walk map, and last night was no exception. Portraits by Cheryl Zahniser (photo above) and Jeremy Bell is now on display in honor of Black History Month. And singer/playwright Tina Vernon provided the music:
As gallery co-owner Diane Venti explained via Facebook, Vernon is in Seattle “to perform later in the month as part of Seattle’s Hansberry Project.” It’s one of Vernon’s three home bases, according to her bio; she is premiering her one-woman play (with music) “Wanted,” February 27-March 3 at Theatre Off Jackson.
P.S. Next West Seattle Art Walk is March 14 – but even if you didn’t get out last night, many of the exhibits continue for at least the next few weeks, so review the venues on the WSAW website, and check them out when you can.
Today’s list of calendar highlights is all about Valentine’s Day. Above, Sarah shares photos of the famous Duckies of Lowman Beach: “The Ducks are in full Valentine’s gear and sharing the ‘LOVE’ with their West Seattle neighbors who are loving the tunes, especially the children.” Find them at 7031 Beach Drive, on the south side of Lowman Beach Park. Lit up at night, too!
Tonight is also West Seattle Art Walk night:
From Alki to Morgan Junction and beyond, here’s the list/map of who’s participating in the winter Art Walk season. Tonight from 6-9 pm, stop by any of those venues to see what’s on display and, in many cases, meet the artist(s). Most of the venues/artists are also showcased on the official West Seattle Art Walk website – as you’ll see here.

Even more – on the calendar!
With this week’s news of a city-county gun buyback, our society’s use of and relationship to firearms returned to the headlines. That makes a new art exhibit in West Seattle all the more timely, and you can see it during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. We visited The Admiral District’s Mind Unwind gallery/event space for a preview last Friday night, first night of “Gun Show 2013” by Vancouver, B.C., artist Brent Ray Fraser (above), who describes his images of guns and flowers as examples of yin and yang:
Gallery owner Krystal Kelley told WSB the exhibit was booked months ago, long before the Connecticut school massacre and other incidents brought “the gun debate” back to centerstage in our country. She wondered whether to cancel it – but decided that it might play into the discussion, helping people consider their own beliefs and feelings about firearms. This is part of an ongoing series of work by Fraser, about 60 in all so far, he says. He is at Mind Unwind tonight, creating art live, till 9 pm; the show continues till the end of the month, and you can also see it while visiting MU’s Treehouse Lounge loft (2206 California SW). P.S. Some of Fraser’s work in the exhibit is complimented by arrangements from Admiral’s Flower Lab.

CHRISTOPHER BOFFOLI @ ARTSWEST: The “Food as Art” three-artist show featuring some of the internationally renowned photos by longtime WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli runs just a few more days at ArtsWest – where you can attend a talk with Christopher and the show’s other two artists TONIGHT, 6 pm.
SHOP LATE THURSDAY IN THE JUNCTION: While you’re out – check out the participating stores – also open till 9 (or so).
AND WHILE YOU’RE OUT – DONATE! Twilight Artist Collective, for example, has a bin for Treehouse – details in the “Giving Opportunities” section of the WSB Holiday Guide. Lots of other businesses, too.
‘SANTA AL’ ROAMING: Taking a break from his North Pole work, “Santa Al” (who shared the photo above) reports he’ll be “making random drop-bys tonight during the Art Walk and (Shop Late Thursday) at the Junction.”
ASK THE EXPERT: Second Thursday also means this monthly event at the legendary West Seattle Tool Library (northeast side of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, 4408 Delridge Way SW) – 6 to 8 pm, with experts on hand to talk with you about a variety of potential projects (among those you’ll find, WSB sponsor LD Arch Design) – full list on the Facebook event page.
ARBOR HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY BOOKFAIR BEGINS: 7 pm tonight, come to Barnes and Noble at Westwood Village to hear special guest readers from Arbor Heights Elementary, which is B&N’s Bookfair beneficiary – special code for purchases over the next week is part of the info you’ll find in our calendar listing.
MADISON CONCERT: Madison Middle School Music Department winter concert happens tonight in the Madison gym (45th/Spokane), 7 pm.
KING TIDES CONTINUE: We went out for a low-tide walk late last night, and we weren’t alone; others were out with flashlights, peeking at what was revealed on the beach. Per the chart, tonight’s the lowest low tide, -3.6 at 10:41 pm. The afternoon high tides are on the wane but tomorrow at 6:06 am, you’ll find a 12.8-foot high tide, almost as high as it’s going to get this time around.
More on the calendar – and ongoing seasonal events in the WSB Holiday Guide.

Just a quick reminder – 6-9 pm Thursday night is the nexus of West Seattle holiday shopping: Shop Late Thursday and West Seattle Art Walk, same night, many of the same places – plus Art Walk participants in The Admiral District, Alki, Morgan Junction, and other parts of the peninsula. You can preview many of the Art Walk’s featured artists right now by going to the official website – wsartwalk.com – and to see the list of who’s participating in Shop Late Thursday all season long, go to this page on The Junction’s website.
The West Seattle Art Walk really isn’t a one-night event – for most venues and artists, it’s part of a month-long exhibit. “A Feast for the Eyes: Food in Art” at ArtsWest – which includes some of longtime WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli’s internationally enjoyed “Big Appetites” work – opened the day before Halloween, but the reception highlighted last night’s Art Walk festivities. That’s Christopher above; also part of “A Feast for the Eyes,” Kristen Reitz-Green:
Jere Smith‘s work is featured as well. Along with ArtsWest, WSB’s Katie Meyer made two other Junction stops last night – photos ahead (and a reminder about the big holiday-season Art Walk!) … Read More
