West Seattle, Washington
01 Tuesday
In our spot checks within the past 12 hours, Delridge Arco (left) is now matching Admiral/Cali Chevron at $3.17, the lowest posted WS price for regular that we’ve seen. Several others are close – Charlestown/Cali 7-11 is down to $3.18, and the Fauntleroy/Alaska stations were below $3.20 when last we looked.
You are, if you expect the ravaged roadway of Sylvan/Orchard (east of High Point and home to the sign at left) to be all good as new once the upcoming closure is through. Nope, just a short stretch, reiterates the project spokesperson in today’s Herald.
New paving alert just out from the city for tomorrow and Friday, 9 am-4 pm each day, in the vicinity of West Marginal/Chelan.
At least two WS gas stations are down below $3.20 this morning: Admiral/Cali Chevron (left) at $3.17/regular, and Delridge Arco, which had a worker out changing the signs (all four of them; tough job to have to switch numbers on up to twelve displays every time there’s a price change!) to $3.19/regular as of about half an hour ago.
There is a problem with people making illegal U-turns on Harbor Island near the “low bridge,” according to the P-I traffic troubleshooting column. (We had trouble placing the location so here’s a better map.) If this is something you do regularly, you’ll want to know that the city says, in the P-I column, it’ll be changing the curbing again soon to try to stop the U-turners.
… so fast, we can barely keep up. Now the lowest posted price we’re seeing (but not by much) is Fauntleroy/Alaska Shell, $3.24/gallon.
As in, screams from drivers fed up with bumpy Sylvan Way/Orchard between Delridge & High Point. We just noticed this addition to the warning sign along the westbound lane:
For the first time in a long time, at least three WS gas stations have regular posted in the $3.20s. The 35th/Avalon 7-11 has taken a big dive to $3.28; not to be outdone, Delridge Arco is down tonight to $3.27 (left). (Admiral/Cali Chevron was at $3.29 when we last went by this morning; we trust our north end spotters will tell us if it’s fallen further!) Looks like this is in keeping with a national trend, though we’re still above the U.S. average.
The City Council just officially approved its $8 million plan (which will apparently take a year to draw up, so guess the viaduct’s not going anywhere any time soon) to try to figure out how we would all get around without a viaduct or a tunnel. Press release text after the click:Read More
First it’s up a bit, then it’s down a bit, then it’s up a bit: West Seattle’s lowest posted price for regular is back up two cents — Delridge Arco (near Home Depot), now back to $3.31/gallon. This is a dime below the daily statewide average as tracked by AAA, but 15 cents higher than this day last year.

The new nighttime “Click It or Ticket” patrols are supposed to be out on Alki tonight, according to a WS Herald story earlier this week.
There’s now a date set for a road closure that will mean months of detouring for people who use Sylvan Way/SW Morgan to get between 35th and Delridge: The closure starts June 18 and is expected to last through mid-September. It’s happening for underground utility work related to all the housing construction in the area; an open house is planned one week ahead of time to help make sure everyone has the info they need to get through the shutdown. This city press release has more info on the exact shutdown zone as well as detour plans.
Big City Light contingent, with flagger and traffic-directing officer, busy a mile or so from the south end of Beach Drive, not too far from where this happened during the windstorm.
Lincoln Park 76 still has West Seattle’s highest posted price for regular, but now that’s down a bit, with a two-cent drop today, bringing it to $3.47/gallon. Perhaps this scared somebody somewhere.
As a followup to our discussion last week, a WSB reader sent this more heartening tale:
I caught the 21 bus today after waiting about ten minutes. At the last minute a young man appeared, pushed ahead of me in line and took one of the last seats.
Immediately another young man, tattoos up and down both arms, stood and offered me his.
I’m going silver haired. I’m also disabled, although not in any way that shows. You may be sure I thanked the young gentleman warmly.
Like so many other things, bus etiquette depends on the luck of the draw.
No new info in today’s P-I article on the Water Taxi — the year-round possibility hit the headlines 3 weeks ago — but it’s nice to see it get more time in the spotlight. Gives us an excuse to put up a photo left over from our weekend peek under the Seacrest pier – here’s how steep the walkway from the WT dock gets during a -3′ tide!

As the Cali paving work enters a new phase (the blacktop’s all done up to just north of Charlestown; now the focus is on the stretch up to Admiral), we’ve received a reader’s troubling tale of late-night hijinks that could threaten safety. We’re passing along because at the very least, if you live in that area, you can help watch for this; if you drive in that area, be very careful. Full e-mail after the click:Read More
Yes, price-drop fever seems to be breaking out almost all over. As a comment on last night’s post pointed out, Admiral/Cali Chevron (left) has dropped too (so the highest gas price in WS, Admiral/Cali’s price for premium, is now down to $3.79); and while driving along Delridge, we noticed the Arco near Home Depot has reclaimed the title of lowest posted gas price in WS — now $3.31/regular.
The latest phase of the Cali repaving continues to march north; while two-thirds of the blacktop is now replaced on the south end of the work zone, removal work is heating up from PCC northward, and now the area is on alert that Cali’s intersections with three more streets will be blocked off at various times over the next week or so: Hanford, Lander, Stevens.
From the WS Herald Letters to the Editor page: A sorry saga of human unkindness.
For those who use Morgan/Sylvan to get between east and west WS, there’s word from the city’s Neighborhood District Coordinator that the construction company is now targeting mid-June for the upcoming summertime road closure — two weeks later than the most recent plan.
