Spectacular Saturday sunset

Remember the wild lightning-storm shots last month from Joe LeBlanc? This time (thanks, Joe!), he is sharing incredible views — again from Alki Point — of last night’s sunset:

Think anyone will take THIS banner down?

We can’t zoom this taken-on-the-fly photo any closer — but this banner spotted on the Fauntleroy overpass about an hour ago says, “Help 7-year-old Dylan Fight Leukemia!” and gives the name Phil Remlinger and a phone number (206, didn’t catch the rest). Can’t find any obvious corroboration online for Dylan or Phil (closest we have found is a Tacoma first-grader named Dylan who’s fighting leukemia) — if anyone knows more about this, e-mail us. It’s the second one we’ve seen pop up on the much-policed overpass in the past few days (the other one was a birthday wish that was up in the morning, gone by evening):

Jampacked Junction trick-or-treating

(Hi! If you are finding this post because of a 2008 search for Junction Trick-or-Treat info: the event is Saturday, October 25, 1-3 pm; we have tons more Halloween – and winter holiday – event info here – thanks!)

(Original 2007 post follows) As you can see in this photo looking up the sidewalk along California, north from Easy Street — it was elbow-to-elbow, mask-to-mask for this afternoon’s Junction trick-or-treating:

Along that stretch, the treat scene outside Coffee to a Tea with Sugar:

coffeetoateahalloween.jpg

And it seems the Hi-Yu Parade is not the only time you can spot pirates in The Junction’s walk-all-ways intersection:

More business trick-or-treating coming up on Halloween — Admiral merchants 3-6 pm, Westwood Village 5-7 pm (these and other Halloween night events here).

The most unusual something-o-lantern we saw while out on a long walk today:

butternutolantern.jpg

If you’ve got a great something-o-lantern (traditional pumpkins are great, too), send us a photo, or if you see something awesomely Halloweenish but don’t have a camera, send us the location, since we’ll be out and about taking pix, too.

West Seattle gets mooned

Thank you so much to the WSB-land photographers who have just sent us photos of tonight’s amazing full moon, the biggest of the year. Seacrest seems to be the hotspot — first, that’s where Dawson took this shot:

dawsonmoon.jpg

Next, three photos by Christopher Boffoli, starting with another Seacrest view of downtown and Elliott Bay:

citymoonWSB.jpg

This one, Christopher notes, carries the actual color temperature of the moon as seen from The Junction around quarter past six tonight:

Bonus photo — moonless, but gorgeous view of Rainier, Salty’s, and the Water Taxi:

Short Stop sign is now a little less “adult”

Remember our August discussion about the Morgan Junction Short Stop sign adding “adult DVDs”? Until “West Seattle Dishes to Die For,” it was the talkiest WSB post ever. Now, a new chapter in this sign’s story — crash damage that even took off part of the word “adult.” Evan Baumgardner sent the photo (thank you!); the folks at the store told Evan this happened when a delivery truck hit the sign.

West Seattle morning moonset

Gorgeous nearly full moon in the western sky this morning. 1000 year headache (one of the dozens of sites on our Other Blogs in WS page) has two excellent pix.

More new signage at California/Oregon

Shadowland is not alone in exterior enhancement at The Junction’s northernmost major intersection: This morning, the Senior Center of West Seattle is getting new signage:

Wrapping up the weekend: West Seattle scenes

Some pix we wanted to share before the weekend ended … First, a rainbow over Westwood, sent on Friday by “The House”:

Rainbow over Westwood.jpg

The rest of these pix are ours — first one from Lowman Beach, eligible for the title “as the crow flies”:

crowflies.jpg

Not far away, on the northernmost end of the Lincoln Park shore, we found what looks from this perspective like The Spider That Ate Blake Island:

spiderateblakeisland.jpg

Up the hill from Lincoln Park, alongside the top of the Thistle staircase, a little house with a beautiful garden has this fall-colored plant almost a fluorescent shade of red:

houseatopstairs.jpg

And in a different garden, near the west side of The Kenney, a Halloween creature lurks among the trees:

halloweenlincolnpark.jpg

Now a reminder that weather can be beautiful, too

While we await the next update on the High Wind Watch that’s in effect for tomorrow for most of the region — we just got a beautiful photo of yesterday’s stunning sunrise, courtesy of Steve Fischer, who took pix while waiting for the Water Taxi.

This big bright banner on the side of the Corner Inn (Fauntleroy/Cali) says it all:

fauntleroyfestival.jpg

Events are planned at The Hall at Fauntleroy, Fauntleroy Church (full lineup in last Sunday’s bulletin), and Fauntleroy YMCA. Many great local performers are participating, including the West Seattle Big Band (4-6 pm @ The Hall).

But how does the driver REALLY feel about West Seattle?

That’s the question Mona from Hello Insomnia is asking after getting this bumper-sticker photo:

bumpersticker.jpg

P.S. One WSB team member suggests a FARK-style PhotoShop challenge to fill in the blank on this bumpersticker. If anybody has the inclination and software to play around with it that way, send us the result! EARLY SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE: Several people already have come up with possibilities — jump ahead to see them:Read More

They’re not just going after “House” after all

Earlier this week, we discussed the notice (however official or unofficial) that frequent WSB contributor “The House” got on the windshield of his parked-on-the-planting-strip car in Westwood. At the time, he suggested that police should be focusing instead on the seemingly abandoned RVs lining nearby streets. Tonight, good news for “House” and neighbors — we spotted Seattle Police enforcers in action (on Trenton west of the Westwood Village turn-in) along RV Row:

Sensational sunrise

We weren’t up to see it, but these photos sent in by Joe Murray (who also photographed the colorful clouds on Sunday night) are the next best thing – check that, maybe better:

Midday photo break

Three photos to share – the first two are from among several more that came in this morning from WSB readers who, like us, were wowed by the eerie sky late yesterday (big thanks to them for sending their pix; send yours along any time); the third is a real-estate-related sign we spotted over the weekend. First, a Sunday sky photo from Joe Murray:

joepinksky.jpg

This one’s from Amy:

amypinksky.jpg

And now, from the northeastern edge of Lincoln Park, at the corner of Lincoln Park Way and Fauntleroy. Reminded us a bit of this weekend post at The Mortgage Porter.

As Steve Winwood once sang …

“while you see a chance, take it.” (1981) Seen tonight, a stone’s throw from the now-closed ex-GEE/ex-Huling dealerships:

Wild signs of fall

Those colors on Harbor Ave keep brightening …

fallcolorsreserve.jpg

The migratory waterfowl are returning; here are scoters spotted off the Fauntleroy ferry dock, first swimming toward the ferry, then ducking when its engines revved…

Also from the dock (and from a distance), a loon!

The banner police must be on vacation

Saw this at 7 am today, resolved we wouldn’t mention it unless it was still there at 6:30 tonight. It was. Where are the banner police? On the campaign payroll, maybe? WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE: Still there …

With a hot hat tip to Pike/Pine …

… we debut a new WSB feature. Thanks to the cool folks at Clementine who agreed to help (after we explained this requires expertise which we don’t have, as the least fashionable people ever), and thanks to the readers who suggested WSB should feature fashion from the streets of West Seattle. (A la Pike/Pine, the city’s premier “fashion seen on the street” site.) First, the photo – then, the narrative, and a request for you:

dianafashion.jpg

Narrative from Clementine owner Linda Walsh: “Diana Mucci, seen on California Ave rockin’ polka dots socks and retro high-top sneakers. The contrast of pattern works well with simple black and white. I like how she mixed it up. Nice on the eyes.” (The Clementine blog, by the way, is here.)

Thanks again to Linda, and now our question for you: Got a snappy name for this feature? Leave a comment or e-mail us! Sorry we still don’t have WSB swag for prizes, but maybe we can post YOUR photo on the site … or something.

Seen outside the Watermarke @ 6970 Cali, the abruptly announced condo conversion south of Morgan Junction that we chronicled a month ago:

watermarke.jpg

Side note: A couple blocks south, the for-sale listing for the Shell-E Apartments @ 7130 Cali no longer touts conversion prospects, unlik the ad we first spotted (and screen-grabbed).

Chillin’ on the beach

Photographer par excellence Christopher Boffoli wants everyone to know he took these baby-seal pix on Alki with a long lens from the prescribed distance, with Seal Sitters standing guard. We’re envious, since we have been down to the beach several times in the past few days but haven’t managed any in-person seal sightings ourselves …

Christopher also shared some gorgeous shots of the water, the Olympics, the lifting fog … here’s one of them. Truly a lovely afternoon:
