Cougmania in West Seattle

redlinecrowd.jpg

The mysterious contributor “Rock Steele, Man About Town” sent photos (thank you!) from last night’s revelry at West Seattle’s official WSU-fan bar (we would say “Cougar bar” but that can have a different connotation), Redline Music and Sports (35th south of Avalon). Washington State has made it to the “Sweet 16” round of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament thanks to the victory these scarletcrimson-and-gray diehards were cheering — according to the official WSU Athletics website, first time the Cougs have gone this far since 1941! The Cougs’ next match is 4:30 pm Thursday vs. North Carolina.

West Seattle scenes: 1st Saturday morning of spring

Not even noon yet, and so much has happened already. First, check out the throng outside West Seattle Thriftway in Morgan Junction just before its 9 am egg hunt (so big, we needed two angles – first the group on the south side of the storefront, then the north side):

We hopped quickly over to Alki to catch the crowd gathering at the start of Walk for Water – Seattle is one of two cities nationwide to host this World Water Day event:

waterday.jpg

watercloser.jpg

Next stop, Delridge Community Center – one of West Seattle’s five city-run community centers, all of which had egg hunts at 10 am today – at Delridge, the crowd was broken into three age groups; here’s video of elementary-age kids on the run for their hunt:

Also at Delridge at 10 am, just yards away from the egg-hunt kids and their Easter baskets, older kids — a few dozen from Denny Middle School — were holding different types of collection containers: bright yellow bags for the Delridge Adopt-A-Street cleanup; the students joined North Delridge Neighborhood Council members in this morning’s effort:

West Seattle scenes: Tuesday night edition

Two from WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham: Above, a seal pup just south of Luna/Anchor Park (remember to keep your distance so that the mom will be more inclined to come back for baby); below, a cuddling couple at sunset at Lincoln Park. Top o’ the morning to you

mattstpatsday.jpg

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham sends this scene from a house you’ve probably seen if you visit Lowman Beach – its occupant(s) put out decorations for almost every holiday. Happening right now: Get your car washed, help a team

rainierscarwash.jpg

Not only is sale season (as noted earlier this morning) under way, so is fundraising-car-wash season. Above, you see a quick snap of the Seattle Rainiers 14U team‘s car wash that’s happening till 4 pm today at Complete Auto Repair on the west side of 35th at Holden (map here, but you can’t miss ’em; stretched out over about 2 blocks in both directions are some of the most enthusiastic sign-wavers we’ve ever seen). And the sun’s out just in time!

A peek into the pits

Perfect caption from WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli for these photos looking into the excavations for the two crane-equipped megaprojects under way right now in The Junction:

Coyote sighting & TV-crew sighting

smallercoyote.jpgIf you’re wondering what the TV live truck is doing at Lincoln Park, channel 4 is following up on our report Monday about the “Coyote Warning” flyers papered throughout the hillside neighborhood over the central part of the park. Haven’t seen their story yet but the reporter told us they found the family who says a coyote snatched their dog. Meantime, we got a coyote-sighting report this morning from Dean, who wrote: “I live on the hill above La Rustica along the Me-Kwa-Mooks greenbelt and about 1 am today i was awakened by a howling coyote nearby. Very cool!” (Reminder, info you should know about coexisting with coyotes is in this WSB report about the recent citywide info meeting.)

“Viaduct closed” lights: Just a test

Thanks to two WSB’ers who e-mailed us to report seeing those semi-new “VIADUCT CLOSED WHEN FLASHING” lights in action this morning — one report at 9 am on The Bridge, one report at 10 am on 35th. Marybeth Turner of SDOT confirms it was a planned test, not a malfunction, and is checking to see if any more testing is planned; good thing they’re checking now, since the next weekend-inspection closure for The Viaduct is just a few weeks away (March 22-23).

West Seattle photos: The latest seaside scenes

mattlpsunset.jpg

Tonight’s sunset at Lincoln Park, from WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham (prints of his WSB photos and other work are available at his site, mattdurhamphotography.com). We have three other seaside scenes to share, these taken by Mac Lerch south of Alki Point:

Any birders recognize that last group? The wings look ternlike but the only terns we’ve seen around here are white.

Clearing the way along Harbor Ave

Heavy-equipment cleanup under way this afternoon along Harbor Ave, just southeast of the complex in which Sleepless Coffee nestles:

landcleared.jpg

landcleared2.jpg

No development proposals in the work for this parcel so far as we can tell; however, we’re experiencing memory loss — wasn’t this the “other” parcel with one of the famous old boats? It’s not the one we showed here – that’s still intact (so to speak) a few blocks southeast.

Reader report: Road-raging on an otherwise lovely day

Crazy from the sun? We just noted a big white pickup nearly take out a small sedan in The Junction by turning right onto northbound California from the INSIDE lane on westbound Alaska. And upon our return, this was in the inbox from watchful Admiral resident Meredith:

Just called in to PD:

Two men pulled into the neighborhood to ‘discuss’ an incident of poor driving along Admiral Way. Driver of small silver passenger car stayed in car but brandished a box cutter, driver of black Lexus sedan (license ending in VKA) got out of car and, once he pulled his baggy pants up so he could walk, started threatening the other drivers. While pacing around the silver car, the angered man demanded to know if first driver had a gun, wanted to shoot him (’cause he ain’t afraid of that s**t’), and calling the silver-cared driver a p***y for driving ‘like that’ in a family neighborhood.

Some VERY FOUL language went down between the two, but most frigtening was the Lexus driver who got out of his car: about 6’2″ caucasian, dark brown hair and eyes, light skin, very big pants.

Witness called this and the license plate of silver car into 911 as the guys sped off, likely back onto Admiral Way.

No crime committed but you never know what someone that agitated might go on to do next (or might have done previously), so we note, in the spirit of watchfulness.

Eagle-eyed view in Highland Park

eaglepole.jpg

Thanks to Justin Fallstrom for sending that photo. He writes:

Generally there is not much exciting going on down here in Highland Park; however, this morning, while working outside on the second sunny day in a row, the local murder of crows caught my attention. Apparently crows and bald eagles do not get along very well, however, the fellow in the attached photos did not appear to be too bothered by the very noisy crows. Thought the readers might be interested. The high voltage pole the eagle is perched on is at the intersection of 13th Ave SW and SW Cambridge.

West Seattle Saturday scene: Final tribute to a firefighter

firefightermemorial.jpg

WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham reports: Saturday afternoon, ladder trucks could be seen crossing their “sticks” in memory of CDR Max Joseph Roushman Jr. in front of Forest Lawn Funeral Home in West Seattle. Max Joseph Roushman Jr. was born on August 29, 1919 and graduated from Cleveland High School. Roushman served 34 years in the Navy, primarily flying as a pilot. After retiring, Roushman became a volunteer for King County Fire District #2 in Burien. From 1993 to 2005, Max served as a Fire Commissioner for King County. His full biography is online here.
