Donate: You can donate directly to our event, or help boost our cause by setting up your own fundraising page. The top fundraiser wins a cocktail kit and a $50 gift card to The Westy. Raising $100 or more earns you a free 5K registration (note: must register for the 5K prior to setting up fundraising page.) Donations will be accepted through October 31st.
Though this year’s West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival is again scaled down from the full pre-pandemic in-the-street celebration, one activity will be back this year – business-district trick-or-treating.
While the West Seattle Farmers’ Market continues in its usual spot on Sunday, October 31st, 10 am-2 pm, participating businesses will offer trick-or-treating along the sidewalks during that same time period. The West Seattle Junction Association plans additional candy stations, too.
While the ore-pandemic tradition of Harvest Festival activities and games on a bonus block of open street will NOT be back this year, WSJA is again offering you a chance to support local businesses by ordering tote bags – kid and adult versions are available here until they sell out. WSJA thanks tote-bag buyers from previous pandemic-era festivals – so far those sales have “infused $95,000 back into the local Junction businesses in 2020-21,” the organization says.

Learn! Build! Compete! If you have an 8th- through 12th-grader in the family who is interested in robotics, SkunkWorks Robotics invites you to an open house Saturday afternoon.
Skunk Works Robotics is a team for 8-12 graders who want to work hard, have fun and build competitive robots. We are having an open house on October 2nd at 1 pm at the former Beverly Park Elementary at 11427 3rd Ave S. in north Burien.
Skunk Works has been competing for 16 seasons and has won multiple awards including 3 last season: Excellence in Engineering Award, Designer’s Award and the Skills Competition Award.
The organization draws from all over the region and usually has participants from several school district. Here’s the open-house flyer.
The Kindie West family-music concert series is returning to the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, two Sundays a month, October through March. The artists are part of Kindiependent, “a collective of like-minded musicians who are passionate about cultivating a vibrant kids and family music scene in the Pacific Northwest.” Here’s the lineup:

Doors open at 10 am, shows are at 10:30, lasting about an hour. These are ticketed shows, with an admission charge for everyone 6 months and up, but they’re offering discounted family passes too. Free parking behind the schoolhouse; COVID guidelines will be followed.
From today’s preview list – the Dream Dinners West Seattle (WSB sponsor) outdoor open house is happening until 8 pm at 4701 41st SW! The free bites available when we stopped by included arroz con pollo and M&M cookies. If you get there before 7 pm, you can enter a prize drawing. Sunday, the four-events-in-one Loop the ‘Lupe – an obstacle course, 5K run/walk, youth dash, and Senior Saunter – is back, and it’s not too late to be part of it. We asked race director Brian Callanan for updates – he had four:
REGISTRATION STILL OPEN! But – “There’s a $5 price increase that kicks in on Saturday, so get signed up soon – here. People aged 3 to 83 have registered this year, along with several top finishers from the Alki Beach Sunset Run. So, plenty of fun for people of all ages and elite athletes, too! School of Rock is providing live music, food and drinks are available, and we’re featuring a beer garden courtesy of Georgetown Brewing.”

GET VACCINATED, GET A DISCOUNT! Brian says, “Through a partnership with Bird’s Eye Medical and the WA Dept. of Health, we’re offering COVID vaccinations onsite. bit.ly/Loop_Vaccination is the link for people to register (though we’re taking walkups, too). Pfizer and Moderna shots will be offered. Immunocompromised people can get their booster, but boosters are not available to the general public, as of yet. OLG is working on a second clinic within the next few weeks to make sure everyone who gets the vaccine gets their second shot. MASK REMINDERS: “The state recommends that fully vaccinated individuals wear a mask in crowded outdoor public places if 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained. In case you haven’t seen this in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar – tomorrow night you have the chance to help a local nonprofit school while enjoying an outdoor family-music concert. Dani & the Bee are performing as a fundraiser Thursday night (August 19th) for the Community School of West Seattle. The concert is at 6 pm in White Center Heights Park (7th SW and SW 102nd). It’s free to attend but “donations are greatly appreciated,” says CSWS board president Whitney Young. You can donate/RSVP by going here..
What a day for pup-watching as well as people-watching at the beach. Just after 1 pm, the second major parade of Alki Beach Pride 2021 took off eastbound from Statue of Liberty Plaza – this one, people-powered:

This is the seventh year for ABP – usually a giant beach party until the pandemic forced some changes last year and this year (here’s the full schedule).
Not too late to be part of it – the outdoor movie “But I’m a Cheerleader” screens at Alki Playground starting at 8:15 pm. (Our coverage of some of yesterday’s events is here.)
Smiles, waves, billowing flags, and honking horns kicked off this year’s Alki Beach Pride weekend – celebrating the LGBTQ+ community – with a car/motorcycle parade that left Jack Block Park shortly after noon. Even a classic fire truck!

Day 1 festivities continue with parties at West Seattle Brewing and Alki Beach Pub; tomorrow includes a rolling/biking parade from Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza at 1 pm and an outdoor movie at 8:15 pm at Alki Playground – see the full schedule here. This is the 7th year for ABP, but as explained here, its roots go back much further.

Another way to show West Seattle pride – Highland Park Improvement Club merch! It’s part of what you’ll find outside HPIC (1116 SW Holden) today during the summer’s second Giant Garage Sale – happening outdoors, less than two months after the big fire that ravaged the historic building.

The portable bar survived the fire and is set up again today for thirsty Giant Garage Sale’rs. As for the post-fire recovery, HPIC’s Kay Kirkpatrick tells us they’re still dealing with the insurance company. Fencing is the newest addition around the century-old building:
But as is evidenced again today, HPIC isn’t letting the fire damage push it out of its community-centered role – watch for other outdoor events while the summer/fall weather allows. (P.S. As a nonprofit, they’re also continuing to accept donations, here.)

This weekend’s biggest event is a collection of events – Alki Beach Pride, which Stacy Bass-Walden and her team have kept going through the pandemic – and this year, ABP’s 7th year, there’s a big lineup of events! Highlights will include:
CAR PARADE: Start arriving 10:30 am Saturday at Jack Block Park (drive into the entrance at 2130 Harbor Avenue SW), decorate your car, and roll out at noon to head toward the beach.
RAINBOW CITY BAND: Performing at noon Saturday in The Admiral District (2300 block California SW) and then “in several spots on the Alki boardwalk.”
VOLLEYBALL TRAINING: Join the West Seattle Reign on the beach volleyball courts 11 am-7 pm on Saturday, all ages.
COVID-19 VACCINE POP-UPS: Two chances to get vaccinated – noon-7 pm Saturday at Alki Bathhouse (60th/Alki), 3-9 pm Sunday at Statue of Liberty Plaza (61st/Alki).

The return of Loop the ‘Lupe – four events in one! – is a little over three weeks away. You can choose between Seattle’s only obstacle-course event, the 5K fun run, the Senior Saunter, and/or the Kids’ Dash, all at Walt Hundley Playfield on Sunday, August 29th. The obstacle course features seven obstacles on a distance-certified 1K “loop.”
If you’re not already registered, there are five good reasons to do it today: Registration fees for the obstacle course and 5K are discounted $5 through tonight – then tomorrow the fee goes up. Loop the ‘Lupe, with community co-sponsors including WSB, raises money, explains race director Brian Callanan, for “the social outreach work at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, which operates a safe parking lot for homeless neighbors, coordinates voter registration and racial justice education, holds an annual Day of Service benefitting various organizations in the region, and much more.” It all stretches across the morning and afternoon on August 29th, also including live music, food, drinks, and a beer garden.

The biggest Night Out party in West Seattle is tomorrow night (Tuesday, August 3rd) in The Junction. As previously reported, the West Seattle Junction Association put out a call for buskers to perform, and so far more than 20 are signed up, including fiddler Dawn Hepburn, a local regular (here she is playing at the Farmers’ Market in July):
Other performers range from world music to an Elvis tribute! WSJA invites you to come to The Junction 5:30-9 pm tomorrow – either instead of your own Night Out party or after yours winds up! One year ago, we covered the start of a “Peace Peloton” bicycle ride from Alki to the Northwest African-American Museum. Peace Peloton rides have continued, in support of Black-owned businesses and economic justice, and West Seattle neighbor Katelyn, a PP event organizer, wants to make sure you know about a ride this Saturday (July 31st) from Columbia City to White Center – so in case you haven’t seen it already in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, here’s the flyer! Riders will stage at The Patio in Columbia City between 3 and 5, then take off for White Center – a seven-mile ride – at about 5:15 pm, ending at Beer Star (16th/98th). The RSVP link is on this page.
One week from tonight, it’s the return of Night Out. If you won’t be busy with a block/building party. the West Seattle Junction Association invites you to come spend the evening in “downtown West Seattle.” 6 pm-9 pm next Tuesday (August 3rd), The Junction welcomes you to a special evening, with food and drink specials among other things. (Look for a list here when it gets closer.) You’re also welcome to add to the festivities: “We welcome performances with instruments and tools ranging from acoustic instruments, performance art, odd instruments, puppets, bubbles to magicians.” (Sign up here!) P.S. No street closure planned in The Junction – on Night Out, that’s reserved for non-arterials.
Call this a summer of transition – some annual events returning this year, some not. Among those that are – Loop the ‘Lupe! Sign up through this Friday night and you’ll get the lowest registration prices. Here’s the announcement:
Loop the ‘Lupe features seven exciting obstacles on a distance- certified 1K “loop” at Walt Hundley Playfield in West Seattle, which includes an agility course, a wall climb, a mud pit, and more. Participants finish five loops for the full 5K Obstacle Course race. A one-loop Youth Dash with obstacles is available for kids 8 and under (with adult supervision), and a no-obstacle 5K Run/Walk course has been provided for runners and walkers, too. For older participants (age 65+), Loop the ‘Lupe also features the “Senior Saunter,” a 100% flat, timed walk that is one of the most popular senior-focused races in Seattle. Loop the ‘Lupe will also have live music provided by the students of West Seattle School of Rock. Plus, participants can enjoy food, drinks, and a beer garden (age 21+) for additional purchase.
Proceeds raised from the event go toward the costs of social outreach work at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, which operates a safe parking lot for homeless neighbors, coordinates voter registration and racial justice education, holds an annual Day of Service benefitting various organizations in the region, and much more. Through their partnership with the St. Vincent de Paul Conference, OLG supports food distribution and assistance for rent and utilities for low-income families. “We’re reaching out to help everyone in our community, regardless of their faith background,” says Parish Administrator Michelle Scheving. “Payments for rent assistance funding alone have jumped 71% in the past year, so we’re grateful for all our participants coming to the Loop, having a good time, and supporting a good cause.”

Three big events ahead in the West Seattle Junction:
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: This one is not just in The Junction but also beyond, from Alki to Arbor Heights! Thursday, starting at 5 pm, it’s the next Second Thursday Art Walk. No closed streets again this year (usually this would be Summer Fest Eve), but lots of fun to be had. See this quarter’s venue list above – not only places where you’ll find art, but also venues offering food and drink specials to Art Walk-ers. SIDEWALK SALE: Long before there was Summer Fest (which WILL return next year!), there was the midsummer Sidewalk Sale – and this year it’s back, Friday and Saturday (July 9-10) – more than two dozen businesses are participating (and we’re told there’ll be some pop-ups too). MAYORAL CANDIDATES’ FORUM: As previewed last night – Saturday at noon, WSB and the Junction Association are co-sponsoring the only pre-primary forum devoted entirely to West Seattle issues. We invited all 15 candidates to the forum at the Senior Center of West Seattle; nine have RSVP’d. Best way to watch is online, as we’ll be streaming to YouTube and social-media channels as well as here on WSB; limited in-person seating will be available for a few vaccinated spectators, first-come first-served (doors open at 11:30 and will close at 11:50).

FREE PIZZA: There’s a line outside Pagliacci (4449 California SW) because they’re giving away free slices, chain-wide, until 3 pm, as a reopening celebration. Limit two slices per person. Full details are on the Pagliacci website.
