The second of two West Seattle scavenger hunts that start next week is also an encore – another search for hidden glass floats. It’s again a collaboration of the West Seattle Junction Association and West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. If you haven’t already seen it in our calendar, here’s their explanation of what kicks off August 5th:
Are you ready to go on a West Seattle scavenger hunt? Back by popular demand, the 2023 West Seattle Glass Float Hunt kicks off on Saturday, August 5, 2023. This year’s theme is “GO WEST.” inspired by the stunning sunsets of West Seattle, as well as the neighborhood’s geographical direction. Beginning Saturday, August 5th, the West Seattle Junction Association and West Seattle Chamber of Commerce invite everyone to search for glass floats hidden throughout West Seattle. 50 floats will be hidden on August 5th, with 50 more the morning of Saturday, August 12, 2023. A total of 100 floats will be hidden both indoors – in beloved local businesses – and outdoors.
Each 2023 glass float is individually hand blown by Avalon Glassworks in stunning red and yellow hues reminiscent of West Seattle sunsets. Each 4-inch sphere is stamped with a heart and “WS” on the sealing button. Float hunters should look high and low for colorful round balls peeking out through the mesh of a knotted net bag. Labels encourage the lucky finders to register the float, as well as tag the local business where it was discovered on social media.
Chris Mackay, Executive Director of the West Seattle Junction Association, shared, “We are thrilled to bring back our Glass Float Scavenger Hunt this August! This engaging event is for participants of all ages who want to discover new businesses and nature areas as they search for gorgeous glass floats. Come one, come all and have fun combing the area for yellow and orange glass balls!”

Two West Seattle-wide scavenger hunts start in early August. First, on August 3rd, Summer Scramble, brought to you in part by the creator of Winter Wander. Here’s the announcement:
Registrations are now open for a unique community oriented augmented reality pirate adventure that is coming to West Seattle from August 3rd – 6th this year. The Summer Scramble yARrrr Pirate Adventure is a mashup of Pokemon Go, Geocaching, and the prior Winter Wander events. Similar to prior years, team members will solve clues to discover the pirate locations. But this time, they must “capture” the pirates there using their phones to discover where the treasure chests are hidden.
This AR adventure is sponsored by over 20 West Seattle businesses, run by veteran community event organizer Alice Kuder, and developed by West Seattle mixed-reality designers Robert and Laura Peckyno.
Each treasure chest is directly sponsored by one of the local businesses and contains a unique discount or offer for participation. Teams that find all 20 treasure chests will be entered into a special drawing for one of three physical treasure chests filled with swag donated by local businesses.
Charge your phones, grab your pirate hats,
batten down the hatches, and hide the catnip!!

RAT CITY RUMBLE: Another block party in White Center! Lariat Bar is leading this one, 11 am-5 pm Saturday, with 16th SW closed between 98th and 100th, and wrestling matches – in keeping with Lariat’s theme – among the highlights. S2S FEST: Peace Peloton presents a festival of food/drink, music, and arts/crafts at Seacrest Park (1660 Harbor SW), 3-10 pm Saturday. You can RSVP for free by going here.

OPERA IN THE PARK: Sunday at 10 am, in Highland Park (1100 SW Cloverdale), Seattle Opera will present “our 2023 touring production, Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World, a 35-minute-long bilingual opera written for youth audiences. This interactive piece features an updated text that moves seamlessly between English and Spanish.” Read more here about the event (which will be repeated August 13th if you can’t go this Sunday).
Huge night ahead for three reasons – so we’ll start with them!
SUMMER FEST EVE: It’s the night before the big three-day festival in The Junction, and the streets will be closed in the festival zone by 4 pm – California between Oregon and Genesee and between Oregon and Edmunds (Oregon stays open to east-west traffic), Alaska between 42nd and 44th. All are welcome to come to The Junction tonight, walk in the streets, and enjoy the pre-festival evening, which coincides with the monthly West Seattle Art Walk (more on that below) and also features bonus events like DancePowered‘s flash mob at the Walk All Ways crossing around 7:15 pm, performers at KeyBank Plaza (including Aurora Ave.!), and “tons of colored chalk lying around” for sidewalk/pavement art. WEST SEATTLE ART WALK, WITH THE ART OF MUSIC: 5-9 pm, at venues all over the peninsula, it’s the night to celebrate art! Here’s the map/list for this month:

SUMMER CONCERTS AT HIAWATHA: The Admiral Neighborhood Association is reviving the free concerts on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center (along Walnut south of Lander) for three Thursday nights starting tonight, 6:30 pm, with the West Seattle Big Band. Bring your own chair/blanket (and picnic dinner if you feel like it) – everyone welcome. And as noted here – visit Admiral Art Walk participants first to get “passport stamps” and then enter a prize drawing at the concert!

Just two days away …
Thursday’s the night, the east side of Hiawatha Community Center (along Walnut south of Lander) is the place, 6:30 pm is the time, and West Seattle Big Band is who you will see and hear – it’s the first of three Summer Concerts at Hiawatha, presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association for the first time since 2019! That’s also West Seattle Art Walk night, so, the ANA tells us, “The Admiral Art Walk participating businesses have passports – those who get theirs stamped (6) and drop them at the ANA booth at the concert will be entered into a drawing for an Admiral Business Prize Pack.” Meantime, as shown on the poster above, the concert series will continue for three consecutive Thursdays – July 13th, 20th, and 27th. Bring a chair and/or blanket to sit on, picnic dinner if you want, and get ready to enjoy outdoor music.

West Seattle’s next big summer event will bring a crowd to Alki Beach on Saturday (July 8th) for the Seafair Pirates’ Landing. We’ve checked with a spokespirate to get details. Like last year – unlike pre-pandemic years – this will be “just” a landing, not a daylong festival. They’re aiming to arrive around 1 pm, but we’re warned it could be a little earlier, or later. As usual, you’ll hear offshore cannon fire as they approach. On the beach, look for the taped-off area by Alki Bathhouse for the path they’re expected to follow on arrival. On the street, you’ll see their legendary parade boat, the Moby Duck; their spokespirate says they’re also planning to visit Christo’s on Alki, El Chupacabra, and the Benbow Room while in West Seattle.

The peninsula’s biggest holiday event starts at 10 am tomorrow – the West Seattle Fourth of July Kids’ Parade! This afternoon we have some final words from organizer Megan Erb for everyone planning on participating or watching:
Tomorrow is the West Seattle 4th of July Kids Parade that heads through the North Admiral neighborhood and ends up at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. Here’s a few things to know if you’re planning on attending.
The kids are the parade! Dress up in your favorite 4th of July duds, decorate your bike, scooter, wagon, stroller, and yourself and join the fun! Or you can grab a chair and a flag and watch all the cuteness walk by. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 44th Ave. SW and Sunset Ave. [map] with a welcome speech by parade organizer Megan Erb, the singing of the National Anthem by Mode Music, and the parade countdown! There is a bunch of 4th of July swag that will also be handed out by Red Level sponsors of the parade: Neighborhood Naturopathic, Westside School, Holy Rosary School, and South Seattle Cooperative Preschool. Make your way to the start of the parade for pinwheels, flags, necklaces, and more!
If you’re heading to the fun at Hamilton Viewpoint Park, please note you will not be able to park at the parking lot. It’ll be blocked off for the safety of the paradegoers. SPD will be on hand to help keep everyone safe. Two food trucks, Lil’ J’s Super Dawgs and Homebites, will be there, and West Seattle Grounds will have a cold-brew coffee cart with pastries.
Several sponsors will have table activities for kiddos at the park, including Neighborhood Naturopathic, Holy Rosary School, South Seattle Cooperative Preschool, Outer Space Seattle, Sensa Play, Mathnasium, Mode Music, and the Admiral Neighborhood Association. The event isn’t possible without these sponsors and others, including West Seattle Blog, Potter Construction, Fit4Mom West Seattle, South Seattle Crossfit, West Seattle Food Bank, and Westside School.

Also note if you’re traveling in the area between 10 am and 11 am, the parade does cross California SW south of Hamilton Viewpoint, so there’ll be some traffic stoppages. The parade’s been a tradition for more than a quarter-century!

West Seattle Summer Fest is headed our way fast – weekend after next – starting with Summer Fest Eve fun in The Junction on Thursday night, July 13th, then continuing with the full festival Friday through Sunday, July 14-16. If you have a bicycle, you can join a fun way to get to Summer Fest on the final day – the annual “Little STP Ride” with West Seattle Bike Connections! If you haven’t already seen it in our Event Calendar, here are the specifics;
Have you ever wanted to do the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride, but forgot to sign up – or train? Here is your big chance! Do it in 2 hours! Same weekend as Cascade’s big STP, so you can brag and post pix like the other one-day riders. Join West Seattle Bike Connections on a Cascade Bicycle Club free group ride starting at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. We will be riding from SW Seattle Street to SW Portland Street, and back north to Summer Fest at the West Seattle Junction, for a fabulous finish-line party. After an hour or two there, participants can ride home independently, or ride with a leader back to the start. 10-mile, somewhat hilly route at a leisurely pace. We invite and welcome everyone, including people of all ages, languages, ethnicities, genders, races, and abilities.

Just in from the Admiral Neighborhood Association – the park east of Hiawatha Community Center will be available for their Summer Concerts series after all! ANA’s Dan Jacobs tells WSB they were able to get the park for three Thursday evenings in July, and the lineup is set:
July 13 – West Seattle Big Band
July 20 – School of Rock and Mid Pak
July 27 – Ranger and the Re-Arrangers
You’re probably familiar with WSBB and School of Rock; Ranger (et al) was part of the last Hiawatha slate in 2019 – they play “gypsy jazz.” These are free, all-ages, bring-your-own-chair-or-blanket concerts – ANA promises other details soon.
Just got late word of this, along with a texted photo – until 3 pm, you’re invited to the Genesee Hill Elementary lot for a car show organized by two fifth-graders. “Some cool cars,” we’re told – at least 14. The lot is off Genesee near 51st.
Before we get to the list of what’s up today/tonight, we have new details of one of Saturday’s coolest events – it’ll be like going to the mountains without leaving West Seattle! Camp Long (5200 35th SW) is presenting Mountain Fest all day, and shared this preview (with photos):
Join us this Saturday, June 24th for Mountain Fest at Camp Long! This is our annual celebration of all the things that make Camp Long the hidden gem it is and more!
We will have lots for you to do including old favorites like our rock climbing, naturalist programs and the high ropes course along with other organizations sponsoring events like bouldering on the north rock tower by Vertical World and rappelling down the Glacier by Mountain Madness, The Falconer, a smores station by the Girl Scouts, and even more!
We will have activities for all ages and everything is free! Some activities require waivers and registration at the main booth in the center of the field.
The event will run from 11 am to 5 pm with some activities starting/finishing at various times within that window but come out and enjoy our lovely park and all that it has to offer! We look forward to seeing you.
If you haven’t been to Camp Long, you might wonder, why Mountain Fest? Its famous Schurman Rock is one big reason.

We don’t want to let the day slip by without mentioning the big summer-fun doubleheader that is now exactly one month away. On Saturday, July 22nd, the West Seattle Grand Parade returns, preceded by the Float Dodger 5K. Both travel along California Avenue SW from The Admiral District to The Junction. The Float Dodger 5K, presented by West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) and benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank, will start the day at 9:30 am. Since Hiawatha Playfield will be closed for turf replacement, the race will start and end in the West Seattle High School parking lot (3000 California SW). After-party is across the street at WS Runner’s storefront (2743 California SW). You can register right now by going here! Then at 11 am on July 22nd, it’s parade time, starting at California/Lander and heading southbound to The Junction – marching bands, floats, performing groups, community organizations. (Applications to be in the parade are accepted through its website and postal mail.) Just choose a seat anywhere along the route – if you want to hear announcements of who you’re seeing, you’ll want to be near California/Charlestown or California/Alaska. For 24 hours this weekend, 11 am Saturday to 11 am Sunday, the north side of the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) campus will again become a ham-radio hub for the annual Field Day. And it’s all open to the public – you can stop by, observe, participate, and, as organizers explain, “learn more about emergency preparedness, community engagement and service through communication, and the wide world of ham radio!” This is an annual event known as “ham radio’s open house” – and it’s nationwide, as organizers explain:
Field Day is part show-and-tell, part preparedness exercise, and part nationwide contest, aimed at sharpening technical skills and growing the hobby of amateur radio generally. Members will join thousands of other stations set up in fields and remote locations across the country for a weekend of on-air operation. This event is meant to mimic operations in an emergency situation, like an earthquake, where power, internet and cellphone service might be interrupted.
Look for antennas, trailers, and tents in and around the SSC north parking lot and field (6000 16th SW). Field Day is organized locally by Puget Sound Repeater Group and West Seattle Amateur Radio Club. You can see the detailed schedule of events by going here.
Tomorrow’s forecast has improved from “rain” to “chance of showers” – but both of Morgan Junction’s big Sunday events are “rain or shine,” and we have extra info about both.
PRIDE MARCH: The first big event is at 11 am Sunday, the Pride March presented by Autumn and Monica, owners of Youngstown Coffee, HeartBeet Organic Superfoods Café, and Launchpad. Here’s their update:
Our 4th annual Pride March in Morgan Junction is happening rain or shine on Sunday, June 18th Meet up at the starting point Morgan Junction Park (next to Beveridge Place) at 11 am. Our first-ever grand marshals – Stacy and Jolie, founders/organizers of Alki Beach Pride – will lead the way on this easy 3-block walk up to Findlay and back down California, where we’ll end at Youngstown Coffee for a Pride celebration. We’ll be offering specials on our menu and special treats to raise funds for Alki Beach Pride.
We’ve partnered with Paper Boat Booksellers for a Pride Edition story time led by local nanny Ms. Lacey. Story time starts at 12:30 inside the bookstore. Bring your little ones for story time.
MORGAN JUNCTION COMMUNITY FESTIVAL: 1-4 pm Sunday, also at Morgan Junction Park, presented by the Morgan Community Association. We’ve previewed the entertainment lineup; here are three more things you should know about:
Seattle Parks continues to work on the adjacent new Morgan Junction Park plan. The design firm Board & Vellum along and Parks’ project manager are excited to be participating in the Morgan Junction Community Festival. Be sure to stop by their booth to reconfirm the park design and provide input on additional features. After the Festival, Seattle Parks will host an online survey to gather input from people unable to attend the event.
Also, Let the Kids Skate Morgan Junction will offer basic skateboard instruction during festival hours and will hold a Best Trick Contest starting at 4:00 pm. Look for the signs.

SWSHS’s Clay Eals explains, “The activity is for kids to paint decorated stones that promote the Save the Stone Cottage campaign. 10:57 AM: In the blue T-shirt, with a bright smile, that’s Lou Cutler, the retired PE teacher who celebrates his birthday every year by raising money to help kids’ dreams come true via Make-A-Wish – one lap around the Pathfinder K-8 track for every year of his life (72 so far).
This year for the first time, Laps With Lou is happening on a weekend, so it’s open to whoever shows up rather than an all-school Pathfinder turnout. Here’s the stalwart crew out on the field with him in the early going:
We have just headed back up to Pigeon Point to check on his progress. Meantime, you’re welcome to go join him for one or more laps – and to donate via his fundraising page; Lou’s also donated time by volunteering with the organization for many years.
NOON: When we returned, Lou had already finished three-fourths of his laps, so this isn’t likely to last until 2 pm as previously projected. We did catch his planned break to express appreciation to everyone:
The young man who was with Lou in the video, Jacob Marzynski, was the recipient of what we’re told are 275 wishes – so far – in which Lou has been involved over his years of involvement with Make-A-Wish.

Between news updates, we’re also checking in on big summer events – many of which are happening in July. Today, we’re noting that the Seafair Pirates Landing on Alki is exactly one month away. According to Seafair, the Pirates are expected to arrive on the beach around 1:30 pm Saturday, July 8th (which is two weeks before their expected visit by land during the West Seattle Grand Parade). Just be on the beach by the Bathhouse and listen for the cannon fire offshore that usually warns of the Pirates’ approach.
Thanks to Brandy for the photo! Another event happening right now, spotlighted in our daily list, the Gator Fair at Gatewood Elementary (4320 SW Myrtle). Brandy notes, “Lots of booths, music, prizes, and fun. Goes until 2:30 pm. All welcome!” Indoor science fair and art walk too.
This morning, the fishing action at Seacrest is on the pier instead of from the pier. Until 11 am, kids under 14 are welcome to try their luck – poles provided – at the portable pond the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club has set up and stocked with trout:
This is an annual tradition that the club offers as a chance for kids to learn about fishing, free. Seacrest is at 1660 Harbor SW (home of the Water Taxi, Alki Kayak Tours, and Marination ma kai).

With relatively few scheduled events this holiday weekend, we’ll be previewing some of what’s ahead in June. First up, Loop the ‘Lupe is just one week away, on Saturday, June 3rd. This fundraiser for Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s social-service community work is the one and only event of its kind – with your participation options including an obstacle course! This time, two options are offered: An “elite wave” for participants 16+, with two extra obstacles, and the “family wave.” Other options: 5K fun run, Senior Saunter, and Youth Dash. It’s one big party, also with live music, BBQ, and a beer garden, at Walt Hundley Playfield (34th/Myrtle, next door to OLG). Event starts are staggered between 11 am and 1 pm. Not registered yet? They’re a student car club calling themselves the Greasy Peeps, and they’re inviting you to be part of the second annual car show they’re organizing at West Seattle High School:
Student organizers say it’ll happen noon-3 pm on Saturday, June 17th. If you’re showing a vehicle, check-in is at 11 am. Entry fee is $10 if you’re participating in the show ($5 for students); spectators are free. They’re planning to give awards this year and expecting a food truck. Motorcycles, vans, and buses are welcome too. You’re asked to pre-register your vehicle by using this form.
Our weekend previews are starting early this week, because of multiple big events! First, just four days are left until the first West Seattle 5K since 2019. Sunday morning’s race is presented by the West Seattle High School PTSA as a fundraiser. As such, it’s volunteer-powered, and that’s the first update we have:

We’re now entering the three-month heart of major spring/summer event season. Right now, a quick reminder that Loop the ‘Lupe is now less than three weeks away, on Saturday, June 3rd. The centerpiece of this benefit for Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s social-service work in the community is an obstacle course – and this year, you have two options. An “elite wave” is for participants 16+ and will have two extra obstacles; then comes the “family wave.” The day is rounded out with a fun run, Senior Saunter, and Youth Dash. All the activities, plus live music, BBQ, and a beer garden, are happening on Walt Hundley Playfield (34th/Myrtle).
