Let WSHS sophomore-class students watch your kids while you enjoy an evening out!
What: This event is for child care for kids ages 3 (potty trained) to 11 years old and includes pizza, drinks, snacks, games, movies, and crafts.
When: Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 5:30-10:30 pm.
Where: West Seattle High School, 3000 California Avenue SW. Check in at the historical entrance on the left side of the building.
Cost: $35 per child or $30 with 2 cans of food donations for the West Seattle Food Bank.

Haven’t finalized summer-camp plans yet? Seattle Audubon tells WSB there’s still room in its West Seattle day camps! They’re offering weeklong day camps in July and August, based at Explorer West Middle School (WSB sponsor) and with all of West Seattle’s natural wonder to explore.

That’s Darja, who’s teaching a new COMMIT Dance Fitness class for ages 16 and up on Tuesday evenings – an 8-week class starting tomorrow night; call Hiawatha tomorrow to sign up, 206-684-7441. And in a couple weeks, Hiawatha’s Andrea Sisco tells us, they start tumbling classes for toddlers and preschoolers:
Tumbling (Ages 2-3) – Tuesdays, 10:00-10:45 am (Session 1: 4/2-5/7, Session 2: 5/14-6/18)
Tumbling (Ages 4-5) – Tuesdays, 11:00-10:45 am (Session 1: 4/2-5/7, Session 2: 5/14-6/18)
Let’s tumble! Come join our experience and encouraging teachers and learn how to roll, tumble, balance, and explore movement. Your child will improve their self-confidence, body awareness, and learn a few gymnastics skills while having fun in a safe, positive environment.

TUESDAY UPDATE: As per comment discussion and our subsequent followup with the center, the dance-fitness class was canceled after the information was sent to us with a request for publication, but we weren’t notified about the subsequent cancellation. The kids’ tumbling classes, though, are on.

Ten weeks from today, runners and walkers will fill Alki Avenue for a few hours during the 2019 West Seattle 5K. If you’re planning to be among them, you can register now and get the early-bird discount. The WS5K (with community sponsors including WSB) starts just after 9 am on Sunday, May 19th, at 61st/Alki, and raises money for West Seattle High School students via the PTSA. You can register online right now by going here; don’t procrastinate, as the early-bird rate is this month only!

As Christopher Gilliam wrote when emailing us that photo on February 9th – it was “ironic” that the polar-bear-swim Big Plunge at Alki had to be postponed that day because the weather was just TOO “polar.” Now the new date is just three days away – this Saturday (February 23rd) – so we’re reminding you about the Special Olympics of Washington fundraiser. Even if you aren’t plunging (they’re hoping for enough participants to set a world record), you might want to check out the festivities anyway: Food trucks, beer, music – details are here (just keep scrolling down that page) as well as the schedule (before and after the 1 pm “plunge”). If you do want to plunge, here’s where to sign up.

You don’t have to wear a hat – it’ll still be a fun afternoon if you buy a ticket to enjoy tea and treats, plus inspiration, at this year’s CommuniTea, benefiting WestSide Baby and its work assisting thousands of local families. Again this year, the CommuniTea will be at the Sheraton in downtown Seattle. It’s set for Sunday, March 31st, doors opening at 1 pm with live jazz and mimosas, tea and program at 2 pm. Individual tickets are $75; a table for 10 is $600. You can RSVP here.
Love history? You have a chance this week to celebrate it as Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard return to West Seattle with an illustrated talk about their recently published book “Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred.” West Seattle historian and writer Clay Eals, who edited the book, will be part of the presentation, 6 pm Thursday (January 24th) at Aegis Living (4700 SW Admiral Way). Everyone’s welcome to what will be, Eals notes, “the 25th event on behalf of the book since its launch on Paul’s 80th birthday last October 28.” Find out about the previous presentations – including videos – on the book’s website. Better yet, just go! It’s free, and Aegis will treat you to appetizers and beverages.

First event is a Women’s Self-Defense and Empowerment Workshop for ages 13+, 11 am-1 pm Saturday at CAA’s North Delridge location (5050 Delridge Way SW), by donation ($30 or 30 non-perishable food items)- preregister here ASAP! The heart of winter is time for many families to get ready for summer, by signing up for camp. Mode Music Studios (WSB sponsor) and Boom Studios LLC have just opened registration and are also offering a camp fair this weekend if you want to sign up in person:
Mode Music Studios and Boom Studios LLC are collaborating to bring you half day and full day summer camps in a variety of ways. Choose from music, theater, or dance camps alone or pair them with another half day to make it a full day of the arts! Enrollment is open starting January 7th at noon to the public. We are hosting a Boom and Mode Studios Summer Camp Fair Sunday, January 13th from 3-6:00 pm. Spin our prize wheel for the chance to win discounts on our full day camps! With Halloween on a Wednesday this year, there’s a full Hallo-week leading up to it, and the fun started ramping up tonight – first big event out of the gate was the Delridge Community Center‘s Glow-in-the-Dark Party.
Most of this event is, well, in the dark – enhancing the truly spooky spirit:

Get your Halloween season going this Saturday by being part of a first-ever West Seattle event – the first Monster Bash fundraiser for nonprofit Mode Music and Performing Arts!
It’s MMPA’s first year of providing music and performing-arts education at Title I schools including Highland Park and Roxhill Elementaries, along with partial and full scholarships for families in need, all intended “to create equity in arts programming within our educational system.” And they’re raising money by offering you a night of food, drinks, music, theater, and fun! KEXP DJ Troy Nelson is hosting. Tickets are only $20 in advance ($25 at the door); the party’s happening at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW), 7:30-10 pm Saturday (October 13th). Things are going to get disastrous during the next Trivia Night at Talarico’s in The Junction. The announcement explains:
Wednesday, October 10th is “Disaster Trivia Night” at Talarico’s Pizzeria, 4718 California Ave SW. Starting at 8:30 pm and going until about 10:15, you and your friends can test your knowledge about disaster preparedness and disaster movies.
In addition to the prizes awarded to the top finishers, West Seattle Be Prepared, our local preparedness group, will hold a raffle of disaster supplies as a fundraiser. See how much you know and at the same time you will help out a great organization. $2 to play, which becomes the prize money.

Got your ticket(s) for Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the West Seattle Helpline fundraising dinner that’s now eight days away? Ticket sales end tomorrow (Friday). Helping the Helpline means you’re helping prevent homelessness; providing emergency assistance to help people stay in their homes is a big part of what the nonprofit does. Your ticket gets you a seat at the 6 pm October 12th event at The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW), which starts with music, a cocktail hour, and silent auction, continuing through dinner, a live auction, and dessert dash. Wanted to let you know that on Tuesday, October 2nd, we will be opening our Play Space (the church nursery area) to the community. We will be open from 9 am – 12 pm, and will continue to be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays during those times. It will be a place for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to bring kids to play while they connect with others or work while their kids play. (Note this is not child care – parents, grandparents, and caregivers must be on campus while their kiddos play.)
This is free to the community. Wi-Fi, coffee, hot chocolate, and tea will be provided. Would love for it to be used as a resource to the community.

Short week, so we might as well look ahead to the weekend already. It’ll start with a beer-and-bowling benefit at West Seattle Bowl, on behalf of the families helped by the Seattle Ronald McDonald House, which tells WSB that lanes remain for Bob’s Bowl-A-Rama, 7-10 pm Friday (September 7th):

Who was Bob? Bob was a child fighting cancer at the House who came to us all the way from Alaska. During his stay, he went to a local camp for seriously ill children where he met his camp counselor, Manny Chao, the brewmaster of Georgetown Brewing.
The two hit it off and an instant friendship was formed. When Bob passed away, Manny decided to brew a beer in his honor every year on May 14th, Bob’s birthday. Georgetown Brewing donates 100% of the proceeds of Bob’s Brown Ale to RMHC.

Less than a week until ticket prices go up for “A Grand Affair,” the annual cocktail-and-casino-style-games benefit for the West Seattle Food Bank. This year, it’s back in West Seattle – at The Sanctuary at Admiral, 6:30 pm Friday, September 14th. It’s a Roaring ’20s-themed cocktail party with casino-style games, hosted wine and beer, heavy appetizers, plus local favorites such as Husky Deli ice cream (served by Jack Miller himself) and specialty cocktails from Peel & Press and The Bridge. It’s one of those things you can only do around here in the summer – and you only have two more chances! So Debra Alderman of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is reminding you it’s not too late to tour historic Alki Point Lighthouse before summer’s end:
US Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers will be giving tours at the Alki Point Lighthouse just two more Sundays for this season: Sunday, August 26th, and Sunday, September 2nd. Tours begin at 1 p.m. and the last visitors enter the site at 3:45 p.m.
We’d love to have lots of West Seattleites come for a visit! Learn about local history and how people and technology have been teaming up to keep people safe on Puget Sound for over a century. Entrance to the site is at 3201 Alki Avenue SW.
