BIZNOTE: Miss Kamei Japanese Restaurant? Here’s where to find it now

Two years after closing in the West Seattle Junction, the owners of Kamei Japanese Restaurant have justopened a new location in Tacoma. They contacted us today to ask us to share that news with their West Seattle fans. They sent a few photos, too.

You’ll find Kamei Sushi Restaurant at 10435 Pacific Avenue South in Tacoma, Tuesdays-Sundays 11 am-2:30 pm for lunch and 4:30-8:30 pm for dinner. It opened earlier this month. (The West Seattle building that replaced the former locations of Kamei and Lee’s Asian restaurants, at 4508 California SW, is nearing completion, but its commercial space will be taken by an urgent-care clinic, as we reported in December.)

I went last Friday a few days after they opened. Their new place is a HUGE upgrade over their last place, but still has the cozy family atmosphere with the same excellent family staff and awesome food at a reasonable price. It IS a 45+ minute drive so we won’t we going as often as we used to of course, but SOOO good to know we can get our Kamei fix in when really needed!!

We asked about that when they were closing and they didn’t give any indication that they would be coming back. However! One of their cooks went to New Leaf Bistro in the Admiral Junction and they have added a few Lee’s favorites like Seven Flavor Beef to their menu.

  Keith – Thank you for the info about the chef. I checked and New Leaf Bistro has Honey Glazed Walnut Prawns which I have so been missing. Now I know what we are having tomorrow night! Lots of other choices also. Yippee!!!!

I’m normally not sympathetic to the travails of car owners, but an urgent care clinic without dedicated parking? If you don’t know the Junction how will you find the pay lot in back when you need urgent care, and know that you need to be well enough to hobble down the stairs or ramp?

YES, they will have dedicated parking; they made a point of saying that for our original story.

An urgent care in the heart of the West Seattle shopping and restaurant district? What a colossal waste of space. I was hoping for another bank or realty office.

I happy they are able to open up a new restaurant 😄. But I checked the map (not that I didn’t believe Andrew) and they are on the outskirts of Tacoma 😩. I was hoping for something a little bit closer to West Seattle but I imagine this was a chance to reset where you choose to do business once you decide that a nearby location to the original restaurant might not be feasible. Hopefully the new location works out as the pictures show a fancy new place. I will have to make a trip out there just to wish them well.

Parkland is on the outskirts (ie, south) of Tacoma, and is mainly known for Pacific Lutheran University nearby and being on the way to Mount Rainier. (I grew up there, so I’m familiar with the area.) It may be a trek, but Kamei is worth it.

  I worked at PLU for close to two decades and would’ve loved to have Kamei nearby. (There is another sushi restaurant in the neighborhood but it’s not very good.)Incidentally if you’re ever down that way and in the mood for really good Italian food, Marzano on Garfield is spectacular.
