WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen silver Veloster; package theft

Two West Seattle Crime Watch reader reports this morning:

STOLEN CAR: Jennifer sent word of her stolen car: “2017 silver Hyundai Veloster, license BOT1064, stolen off 34 Ave SW across from West Seattle Elementary School. Police report # 23-326342.”

STOLEN PACKAGE: Annie says this happened this morning on Barton between 30th and 31st:

We were sitting at our dining room table directly in front of our front door. A forest green (with gray bottom) 2000 Dodge truck with a lot of large items in the back (looked like a lawn mower and random appliances) pulled up; a white man, shaved head, over 6’2″, in a faded black T-shirt, jogged up, grabbed a package off our porch and ran to the truck.

The driver pulled away as he was getting in.

Most of the time delivery people do not knock or ring the bell to let us know they’ve dropped a package there. It might help eliminate some theft if we could get our packages right away. That’s my two cents!

Hi Joan, as someone who delivers a lot of packages for Amazon, many people get upset if you ring the doorbell or knock. As well, Amazon has a policy where if I am delivering outside of 8am-8pm I am not to knock or ring the doorbell. You should get a notification from Amazon when your package is delivered and go out and check when you see it has been done.

While I would love to shop locally, I personally don’t feel comfortable due to brazen criminals stealing purses in broad daylight. It just doesn’t feel safe to walk around any of the junctions or Westwood Village.

  It’s plenty safe to go out and shop. You are only afraid because of the instantly available reporting (that’s a compliment to the Blog), which tends to make it SEEM like it’s unsafe to go out and walk around. The reality is that you are very unlikely to be a victim. Thousands of people every day… every week… every month, shop without being accosted. If you do go out, have situational awareness, walk with confidence and an eye and ear for what’s going around you. Acting afraid calls attention to yourself. Walk with purpose and carry mace just in case and you will be just fine. Don’t live your life in fear. You only get to live once.

Always request delivery to a secure lock box – such as at Safeway and many other locations within 3 blocks (!) of your home. Inconvenient to go get them, I know, and may be a little delay, too, but worth it to get your orders.

Annie, I have a picture of that truck. It was cruising down our alley very slowly and looked very suspicious I could see him pointing to stuff in other people’s backyards. I took a picture just in case. When I went back to look at it after reading your post I see that the license plate has been obscured. So my photo is of no help to you but he’s definitely cruising around West Seattle and I will watch for him again

Post a pic of the truck. It could be stolen so don’t worry about the plate. A pic of the truck is important.

We have opted in to most every delivery service USPS, UPS,FEDEX, AMAZON , to be notified of deliveries – including tracking. It’s free & it works- we know when something is out for delivery- for UPS we can even see where truck is & all send notification of delivery. We can change specifics of deliveries as well. These services are especially helpful during the holidays.

I believe this same “gang” was cruising around stealing packages along Alki Ave a couple of Christmases ago……the bald guy and the truck full of other odds and ends (probably stolen) was in our neighborhood repeatedly during that time period. If I recall correctly it was the guy in the picture plus a woman of about the same age.

Hmmm. Doing their Christmas “shopping”? So stupid! Probably 95% of the things they steal are absolutely useless to them. My last package was 2 pairs of shoelaces for kid shoes and a box of foam earplugs.

Yep have seen that same duo — they are very recognizable — on 21st Ave SW and our neighborhood reported them on 18 Ave SW a few weeks ago. Would love to set a booby trap for them.

Here’s picture of truck that matches Annie’s description. Nov 4th 2023 cruising the alley at Morgan St between 37th and 38th Ave SW. Middle of the day. You can see all the junk sticking out, and in the back was a portable generator.

Amazon has an option for ….delivery instructions. You can type in for them to: ring the bell. Or you could leave a sign at your door that says. All deliveries, please ring the bell multiple times.
