REMINDER: Southwest Library to close for two weeks starting Monday

As announced a month ago, the Southwest Library closes for two weeks starting tomorrow, so Seattle Public Library can install a new electric HVAC system. Once that’s in place, the branch will be fully air-conditioned and more-efficiently heated, according to SPL. The branch is expected to reopen Monday, November 20th. Its book return will be closed until then, too. If you’ve put something on hold and haven’t arranged to get it rerouted, it’ll be held until the closure’s over. And a reminder that our area has four other SPL branches – High Point, Delridge, West Seattle (Admiral), and South Park; the King County Library System’s White Center branch isn’t far, either.

I can’t access other locations, so this means items due during the closure time will have to wait until re-opening to be returned. This seems inefficient, causing other patrons to have to wait additional time before their hold items are available.

Having a pre-planned, publicized temporary closure is better than having to randomly close throughout the summer for high indoor temperatures. Your slightly overdue items (and anyone who might possibly be waiting for them, though likely, other copies in the system also exist) will be fine.

When is the best time then? Never? This is much needed work that will prevent the library from having to close in extreme heat -perhaps even being able to use it as a cooling shelter? HVAC also will be more efficient. All will be fine – there has been ample notice given & folks can adjust their holds & returns accordingly.

If you are concerned that your returns will be held from others due to this temporary closure, please connect with a family member, friend, neighbor, Facebook group, etc. – I’m sure that someone would be happy to assist in returning them for you. They could gather your returns and drop off at the closet Seattle library that’s near where they are doing their errands.

I work in the HVAC commercial industry, and I will tell you that HVAC equipment has long lead times right now and it does not appear that will change anytime soon. Commerical is very different than residential. Many residential contractors have equipment readily available. Commerical units for a building this size is not just sitting around. They are ordered based on the needs of the building. And units that operate with refrigerant needs to be installed as soon as they can, they are not designed to just sit. Just my two cents.
