Another crash toward southwest end of West Seattle Bridge

Another one-car crash tonight toward the southwest (Fauntleroy) end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge, near the remaining Walking On Logs sculptures. No injuries reported. SDOT was called to reset the pushed-out-of-position barrier(s) into which the driver crashed.

    Hmmm. Not noticing a pattern…

It was a small pickup truck, they must’ve spun, they hit the barrier head on and airbags deployed.  Glad they’re ok. To the idiot in the Audi that zoomed around me even though I had my hazards on as the rest of us all slowed down to not plow into the perpendicular truck that crashed already, you get a Darwin award for the day.

I and the driver in front of me were lucky to avoid it. The truck veered right and then took an extremely hard left at a right angle straight into the Jersey barrier at speed. 100% driver error

    Shocking.

WSB. Can you get a statement from SDOT with their response to this area. Would like to see them on record as to if there are pavement condition issues that could-and should be addressed or do they believe these accidents are always 100% driver fault.

Is the city evaluating how to make that turn safer? It seems like at least once per week the barrier has been hit. Just last week, there were cones setup because the barrier was in the road.

The way to make it safer is to slow the heck down !!!

      • Seattlite October 22, 2023 (3:30 pm)

Thank you for your common sense comment, Anne.  The speed limit in the section reduces from 45 to 40 to 30 mph.  I follow the speed limit while other drivers are speeding my on those curves between 45 and 50mph.  No common sense drivers don’t understand that the higher the speed the less control over the vehicle.

Anne. If indeed it is the condition of the pavement a responsible, and right thing to do would be for SDOT to fix it. Don’t you agree?

Maybe they could put in some rumble strips like at the airport?

  • Sam October 22, 2023 (12:52 pm)

Maybe if people would actually slow down and not drive like it is a racetrack then we would see less crashes

    • CarDriver October 22, 2023 (3:55 pm)

Sam. So, has exceeding the posted speed limit been the sole cause of all these crashes?

      • Josh October 23, 2023 (9:06 pm)

I bet it’s at least speed related in >95% of them. Let us know what you find out.

I never ever even come close to slipping or having any instability while coming around that bend. I am always going 40 to 45, even if it’s raining.

It is NOT about SPEED—  its the tires and contact of the curve or no angle of pavement slope on that curve that makes it dangerous something was lost when they attempted their fix of a bridge. Prior to closure it did not matter what speed you took there even in the rain and there were not accidents but on rare occasions of hydroplaning or inexperience. This is a problem area now that was not a problem prior.

I remember how straight and pristine the jersey barriers were after the bridge opening and thought to myself…some person will spin out and un-pristine them. It’s certainly the road surface. Especially the transition from new to old. High grip, low grip. They have the new surface meeting the old in the worse possible spot at mid turn.

Sorry, comment time is over.
