After school was out for the day, it was time for memories at Alki Elementary, soon to be rebuilt after 111 years. People with connections to the school past and present, and other interested community members, were welcomed inside for a two-hour open house to say farewell.
Visitors were invited to write messages on the lunch-room wall:
The last day of school in the old building is Friday, June 30th; during two years of construction, Alki will hold classes at the former Schmitz Park Elementary.
Wow. That’s a great run, Alki Elementary. I really hope we can come together as a community to build a neighborhood friendly to young families. One that is affordable and safe and welcoming. A neighborhood where we know each other. And we have pride in our parks and our schools and each other.
Thank you for the opportunity to say a “fond farewell” to Alki “Grade” School, as I called it from 1957-1964!! My Alki classmates and I often comment on what a great place it was to grow up!! Some of us from the WSHS class of 1970 still gather for breakfasts at the Chelan Cafe to catch up on where life has taken us – Alki remains a special place to all of us!!
