Beautiful photo of a very young great blue heron.  I’m wondering when it was taken? This bird is likely only a few months out of the nest, so the timing should be late summer/early autumn.  If the photo was taken recently, I’d sure like to know.

According to the note in which Jerry sent us the pic, “Above Alki Ave 1-16-2023”

Yes, Gerry – striking photo of a Great Blue Heron and a different perspective from what we usually see.  Regarding comment on immature plumage / ageing the bird:  GBHs reach breeding age and maturity at about two years old (sometimes three).  Since they take multiple years to mature, they may display several plumages during adolescence – which will gradually change to more closely resemble adults.  In this photo, the bird does appear to lack the coloration that would indicate a full adult, so likely a young GBH sporting “subadult” plumage.

Sorry, comment time is over.
