TODAY: 2 School Board members host bus-cut meeting

Before we get back to snow coverage, one event to preview for today: We’ve been covering the Seattle Public Schools proposal to save three-quarters of a million dollars by cutting bus service to most “option schools,” including Louisa Boren STEM K-8 and Pathfinder K-8 in West Seattle. This afternoon at 3 pm, School Board directors Leslie Harris – who represents West Seattle and South Park – and Lisa Rivera-Smith will host an online meeting to discuss the proposal. register here ASAP for attendance info.

Thank you for posting this! As a SPS parent and SPS teacher, this does not seem like an appropriate place to make cuts. What would it cost if the students at Pathfinder and Stem chose to go to their ‘neighborhood’ schools? Students that are currently walking to their option school, would then need bus service if they chose not to stay at the option school. With social distancing on buses would it really save that amount of money? Not all families would choose to do that, but there will be an increase in busing for those who do & for those who would still need busing for their ‘neighborhood’ school. Does anyone know if the specific details of how this would save them money?

Thanks for posting WSB! wondering when the school board actually advertised this meeting. Seems like they just want to make this cut and give as little notice as possible to folks opposed.

I added it to the previous report some days back when the STEM PTA told me about it. Individual school board members have meetings like this at their own discretion – usually I get time/day announcements for our calendar from director Harris but did not for this one.

Last time director Harris had a community meeting was in July, so…
