Morgan Community Association meeting and what else is ahead for your Wednesday

Alki’s Statue of Liberty has been draped in a flag since the day the election was called for President Biden and Vice President Harris, back on November 7th. So Joel Wood sent us that photo as a suggestion for Inauguration Day. We realize your attention may be on what’s happening nationally, but we remain locally focused as ever, so here’s what we have for the hours ahead:

LIBRARY CURBSIDE SERVICE: Both the Southwest and High Point branches offer it today, noon-6 pm.

STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS’ BRIEFING: The weekly pandemic briefing from state health leaders is set for noon, viewable here. UPDATE: Since we published this, the briefing has been rescheduled to 9 am Thursday – same stream link.

CITY COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE: 2 pm meeting includes discussion of the city’s surveillance ordinance and a review of the license-plate-reading tech used for traffic comeras. Here’s the agenda, which includes viewing/commenting info.

You got it wrong. The American flag has represented an absolute embarrassment the past four years. Patriotism is taking a stand against the wannabe fascism trump and his base have tried to foist on us the past four years. Today is the first day in four years to wave the flag and be proud of what it represents, because democracy prevailed.

It is odd that long-standing complaints about the flawed American democratic system, one that is beholden to special interests and favoritism, have suddenly magically disappeared now that Biden has been elected.

Completely bizarre that sensible people weren’t cheering and celebrating when the country was heading in the wrong direction. How fickle of them to now cheer and celebrate when the country is changing and now starting to to head in the right direction.

But anyway, let me give you an analogy, Heartless: A flag is like a marriage ring, you don’t take it off ashamedly when you are squabbling with your partner, and put it back on when you have gotten your way. You know, for better or worse, richer or poorer, that sort of thing.

      You continue to attack an argument that I am not making, and with annoying dogmatism. This has nothing to do with Trump, or any other president for that matter. A flag symbolizes a country in it’s entirety; you don’t get to pick and choose the bits you want the flag to represent – it’s childish.

      A president does not equal a flag. A policy does not equal a flag. A ring does not equal a “partner.” When you divorce a partner, you divorce that person – not the institution of marriage in it’s entirety. Do you see the difference? I didn’t take my flag down when Bush initiated a war in Iraq (with Biden eagerly signing on as a senator), nor did I when Obama was dropping bombs on Libya. Why? Because the flag was more than either of them.

      Your snark fails to understand that people are quite capable of differentiating between the country as a whole and the current direction that the country is taking.
      
      You seem to think it’s fickle to be ashamed and make noises when your country is going in a terrible direction. That’s weird of you.
      
      You seem to think it’s sycophantic when people cheer that their country is turning around, and going in the right direction again. That’s also weird of you.
      
      If you don’t understand why your take is so odd, let me try once more to explain. I’ll make it real simple:
      
      Say you really love a car. It’s your favorite, you’re a big fan. Someone gets into that car and immediately crashes it onto the sidewalk. Then drives into a bunch of pedestrians. By your logic you oughta be cheering–after all, you love that car, don’t you? If you don’t cheer for it you’re just fickle and partisan. That’s ridiculous, and that’s the narrative you want to go with? Huh.
      
      Now here is an important part–the CAR is our COUNTRY. And can you guess who the first driver is? I bet you can.

      Sneaky try, but sorry you don’t get to do that.You diverted the discussion away to an analogy that doesn’t remotely capture the relationship between a marriage ring and a flag. A car is just a car, it doesn’t represent a pact between people, or in the case of a country, peoples. A flag represents a country in it’s totality, all of it good and bad with a variety of different opinions, and there is an implied understanding that the “driver” of the country shouldn’t dictate whether or not we hoist a flag, or whether we love our country. You’ve wandered afield with irrelevant ad hominens and circular arguments (not unexpected given where I now live) which leads me to believe this conversation is “going nowhere,” to borrow a line from Lector in “Silence of the Lambs.

      Heartless:Do you hide “that” car in the garage in shame because the driver, for example, has had his/her licence suspended, or even as you say, driven the car into a crowd? Do you refuse to acknowledge that components of the car still work perfectly fine, or that it still serves many important functions, or the work of many skilled mechanics, simply because you think the driver is impaired?
