From the ‘in case you wondered too’: Why a major law-enforcement contingent was ferrying from Fauntleroy

5:41 PM: We got a question via Twitter about why a major law-enforcement contingent, reportedly including King County Sheriff’s Office SWAT, was headed for the Fauntleroy ferry. Also via Twitter, the answer: The man who was found dead after an incident at an immigration-detention center in Tacoma this morning was from Vashon. The Tacoma News-Tribune’s coverage is here.

10:31 PM: The Vashon Beachcomber has published this report mentioning the large law-enforcement response on the island.

He wasn’t found dead , police shot him dead. I was following this on Tacompton Files earlier today as swat was waiting at PT. Defiance dock to go to Vashon.

In the coverage I had seen by the time of writing this, it wasn’t clarified whether he was dead from the officers’ gunfire or perhaps his own. So I stuck to the basic fact – that he was dead. As with any developing-story coverage, this has evolved, and the TNT has since updated the story to say he was “shot and killed by Tacoma police.”

The dude had a rifle and incendiary devices trying to blow up a propane tank on the site. I can only guess what his motives were but it could have been deadly for the people inside. The police response is understandable since this could be considered a terrorist act.
