West Seattle, Washington
21 Sunday
(SDOT MAP with travel times/ Is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE/ West Seattle-relevant traffic cams HERE)
7:11 AM: Good morning! No incidents reported in/from West Seattle so far.
Right now, Harbor Avenue SW is a street without a stop sign or stoplight, from its south end at the bridge, all the way until its end where the street becomes Alki SW (which continues stop-less until 63rd).
The Alki Community Council wonders if a three-way stop might enhance safety at the intersection with California Way. That was one topic at the ACC’s November meeting.
Gatherings are planned next Saturday (November 24) in memory of Martin Anthony Picinich. Here’s the remembrance his family is sharing with the community:
On the afternoon of November 10th, 2018, at the age of 87, Martin left to join his Lord and Savior, due to several medical complications. He was surrounded by loving family and friends.
Martin was born on the Island of Sansego, Italy, on October 27th, 1931. He was the 2nd child and only son of Dominick and Giovanna.
Martin came to America as a young man from Sansego and soon met his future wife, Bernita, at a local dance. They were drawn to each other from that moment and were happily married and the best of friends for 64 years.
Martin was an avid, lifelong golfer. At one point, he accomplished an astonishing 5 holes-in-one during a 16-month period. Martin was also a beloved barber and hair stylist who owned his own shop in West Seattle for 40 years, and for whom his loyal clientele traveled far and wide.
As a member of Holy Rosary Parish in West Seattle and Our Lady of the Lake in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, he served the Lord, his community, family, and friends, and lived a life of faith alongside his wife and best friend, Bernita.
Martin is survived by his wife Bernita of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; daughters Theresa Samek of West Seattle and Barbara Ramey of Fairfax, Virginia; four granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Rina Tarabochia of West Seattle and Antoinette Mattessich and Faye Bruno of New York, as well as a large extended family.

By request, we call West Seattle restaurants every year to find out who will be open Thanksgiving, for those who just don’t want to cook. Here’s the first take of our list. As always, some caveats – an establishment might change its plan; also, some didn’t pick up the phone and/or return our message. So we expect updates, and we appreciate tips if you find omissions or changes – 206-293-6302 text or voice, or editor@wsb.blackfin.biz. (This is linked on our Event Calendar and in our Holiday Guide, too, for quick ways to find it later. Our guide also includes info on non-restaurant venues with free community dinners on the holiday.)
Big topics tomorrow at one of the last community-group meetings before many go on hiatus for the holidays. The official announcement from Junction Neighborhood Organization director Amanda Sawyer:

In other exciting transit news, Sound Transit will present the latest level 3 Light Rail recommendations that have moved forward in the process! Please join us for JuNO’s next meeting on Monday, November 19th in Hatten Hall at the West Seattle Senior Center (4217 SW Oregon St) from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. We hope you can spare some time before the holidays to learn about these very important issues!

The photo and report are from David Hutchinson of Seal Sitters:
This morning, Seal Sitters responded to a report of a sea-lion carcass floating near the shore in Cove #1 (just north of Salty’s). On examination, it has been determined that this is the same dead animal that was reported to our Hotline back on November 8th. At that time, it floated away before we were able to arrange for retrieval. Due to the current state of decomposition, a necropsy is not planned at this time. The green “W.S.” marking is placed with biodegradable paint so that the carcass can be identified if it happens to float to a different location.
To report any marine mammal, alive or dead, on West Seattle beaches, please call the Seal Sitters’ Hotline at 206-905-7325.
This is one of five dead California sea lions found on area beaches this fall. As reported here, the previous two were necropsied at Don Armeni Boat Ramp on Thursday and both were found to have gunshot wounds. Federal authorities are investigating.
More handmade holiday shopping right now, from our West Seattle Holiday Guide – we just visited the Ethical Trade Sale at Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s Walmesley Center for a few photos. From the sale announcement:
Ethical Trade seeks to change the ways in which conventional trade often leaves behind the most vulnerable people. By buying Ethical Trade, you support the efforts of skilled farmers and artisans working to break the cycle of poverty and to build stronger communities. Employers also assure that workers are treated with dignity and that forced labor is not part of the supply chain.
While you’re there, check out the bake sale with treats made by OLG students to benefit Wa href=”http://westsidebaby.org” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>WestSide Baby. The Walmesley Center is on the northeast corner of 35th/Myrtle and the sale continues until 1 pm.

Again this year, you can get the post-Thanksgiving holidays going with some moving and giving, during the second West Seattle Track Friday! If you haven’t already seen it in our calendar, here’s the announcement from Michele Pettinger of P3 Running:
P3 Running and West Seattle Runner are excited to bring Track Friday back to West Seattle! Track Friday is a community-based movement to mobilize people to support charitable giving. Participants run laps on a nearby track to raise awareness and funds for causes that they care about. Track Friday is held the day after Thanksgiving [November 23] to encourage people to reunite with old and new friends, burn off some Thanksgiving Day calories, and put a little love and giving spirit back into a day that has become synonymous with commercialism.
Michele Pettinger, the founder of P3 Running, is raising money for the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation as her mom is living with the disease. Her friend, Fes Naqvi, who learned of Track Friday last year, became involved and is raising money for The Butterfly Fund, a non-profit that helps families who have children (0-18) who have a catastrophic life-altering medical condition or event.
We understand that you may have a charity that you feel strongly about, so you are able to fundraise for your chosen charity on Track Friday as well! You can do so by simply joining the West Seattle Track Friday 2018 Team.
We will be at Hiawatha Track and Playfield the morning after Thanksgiving from 9 to 11. Invite your friends and family to join – walk 1 mile, 10 minutes, 10 miles, 2 hours, whatever you feel driven to do! Check in with our table to log your miles! We will have hot chocolate, coffee, and some treats, too.
For anyone who participates in the event, 10% of your purchases at West Seattle Runner that day will be donated to the funds. Simply pick up a token from our table at the park to present at the store when purchasing.
You can go here to donate and/or join the team. Hiawatha is at 2700 California SW, and West Seattle Runner (a longtime WSB sponsor) is right across the street at 2743 California SW.

West Seattleites Kendall Jones and Kim Sharpe Jones founded the Beer Church with the idea they could do good deeds while having a good time. Twenty years ago, they organized the first beer-and-bowling event they called the Turkey Bowl. Though Kendall at first wasn’t sure there’d be a second Turkey Bowl, it rolled on and gathered momentum year by year, and around the 10th one, he says (that’s the first one we covered), they realized they had a good thing going. How good?
That photo from tonight’s 20th annual Turkey Bowl gives you an idea of how good – every year, hundreds of pounds of food donated for the West Seattle Food Bank. (They promise to send us an update on tonight’s tally – including donated dollars – later.) The fun also includes an ever-more-impressive raffle, which was happening when we looked in on the Turkey Bowl tonight:
Tonight’s Turkey Bowl also launched this year’s Beer Church IPA, a partnership with three breweries, with sales benefiting the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. You can “look for it at better beer bars and bottleshops around the Seattle area” even if you didn’t make it to tonight’s Turkey Bowl.
P.S. Kendall and Kim also bring you the Washington Beer Blog year-round.
8:30 PM: We’ve confirmed with our original contact that the missing boy has been found safe.
Earlier:
Thanks to the reader who messaged us to note that there’s a brief – though altered – West Seattle scene in the video of the newly released song “When Bad Does Good,” by the late Chris Cornell, a former WS resident. The song is part of a new career-retrospective collection including his solo and group work. The video stars his 12-year-old son Christopher as a bicycle-riding newspaper-delivery boy; the Admiral Theater, with an altered marquee, appears 2:18 into the video. Christopher Cornell Jr. is quoted by Consequence of Sound as explaining:
For me, this video represents my dad and all the art he created throughout his life and what his music meant then and what it means now, not just to me and my family but the city of Seattle and all of his fans.
It’s been a year and a half since Chris Cornell died at age 52.
P.S. Our tipster says the words shown on the altered Admiral marquee are from the Soundgarden song “Fell on Black Days.”
(WSB photo from 2013, the last year the tree was lit)
The city’s highest-elevation Christmas tree is making a comeback this season. Our Lady of Guadalupe is bringing back its tree of lights, after 5 years of a tree-less “Light Up the Night.” Here’s the announcement:
Hundreds will gather on November 30th outside Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and School in West Seattle for an experience like no other: the lighting of the “tallest” Christmas tree in the Emerald City. With its base at roughly 500 feet above sea level, in Seattle’s aptly named High Point neighborhood, the “OLG Tree” makes a triumphant return for the 2018 holiday season in a fun, family centered “Light Up the Night” celebration. All are welcome to “Light Up the Night,” at the corner of 35th Avenue SW and SW Myrtle Street, at 7 p.m. on November 30, 2018.
For the past decade, OLG has hosted a “Light Up the Night” gathering, complete with Christmas carols; cocoa, coffee and snacks provided by the Knights of Columbus; and plenty of holiday cheer. This year, more than 9,000 lights will adorn the evergreen tree (visible from the West Seattle Bridge!) just outside the entrance to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, rekindling a holiday tradition for the ages.
“We’re glad to bring the tree lighting back once again to West Seattle,” said Daren Monroe, Athletic Director of OLG’s Catholic Youth Organization sports program, who has helped organize the event. “We’re making sure this tradition of lighting Seattle’s ‘tallest’ tree continues now and into the future. Everyone is welcome to join us!”
In addition to the lighting of the tree, carols, and holiday snacks, “Light Up the Night” asks for your help in “filling the sleigh” for those less fortunate in our community. Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted at Walmesley Center gymnasium.

A celebration at West Seattle High School tonight as another of its senior basketball stars signed a letter of intent for college – Abdullahi Mohamed is going to Eastern Washington University. Teammates and other schoolmates watched and applauded the brief ceremony, as did the player’s family.
Abdullahi thanked everyone for their support:
His mom Burhan Farah also expressed gratitude, and pride:
Abdullahi and his teammates, with head coach Keffrey Fazio (below left with Abdullahi and his mom), will hit the court next weekend in a preseason jamboree at Chief Sealth International High School.
The Wildcats’ first home game is Saturday, November 30th, vs. Ballard.
Platters by Husky Deli were among the attractions as Menashe and Sons Jewelers (WSB sponsor) hosted its open-house Holiday Party tonight in The Junction. We stopped in to talk with proprietor Jack Menashe about his family’s other famous enterprise – their Christmas lights on Beach Drive.
The ABC show “The Great Christmas Light Fight“ came to the Menashes’ home on opening night last season to film for this fall. Jack Menashe says they’ll be featured on the show’s first 2018 night Monday, November 26th (the second hour, 9 pm, as confirmed by the online schedule). As for this year’s display – work will start after Thanksgiving, and the Menashes expect to illuminate West Seattle’s brightest display starting on Friday, November 30th. Meantime, other family sightings at tonight’s party in the shop included Josh Menashe and wife Michele, and Linda Menashe:

Police are looking for help in solving a series of robberies targeting pizza-shop employees, including a street robbery in which the victim was an employee leaving the South Admiral Domino’s. Just posted to SPD Blotter:
Robbery detectives with the Seattle Police Department and King County Sheriff’s Office robbery are seeking the public’s help in identifying two suspects in a series of pizza shop robberies.
Officers began investigating these robberies July 27th when a pair of men approached a pizza shop employee attempting to complete a nighttime deposit at a bank in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Jr Way South. The men assaulted the victim, stole the money, and fled the area. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.
Weeks later, on August 17th, an employee of a pizza shop in the 4400 block of Rainier Avenue South was closing up for the night when two people approached the door but were unable to enter the locked business. The employee exited the business a half-hour later and was immediately knocked to the ground by the same two men who had tried to enter the business earlier in the evening. The suspects then stole a money bag and fled the scene.
Four days later King County Deputies were called to the 16600 block of International Boulevard in Seatac when the same suspects [above] attacked a pizza shop employee as they attempted to deposit money at a bank.
There have been two additional robberies in Seattle, one in the 9000 block of Rainier Avenue South another in the 3200 block of California Avenue SW.
After poring through the evidence, detectives are now releasing surveillance photos of the suspects and what they believe is the suspects’ vehicle, a gray 2005 Ford Escape SUV.
If you have any information in this case please call the Seattle Police Department Robbery Unit at 206-684-5535.
The Domino’s robbery in West Seattle happened in the early morning hours of October 9th. The incident report says a delivery driver was attacked by a robber who pushed her to the ground as she walked to her car nearby and took her $35 in tip money
