It’s MMPA’s first year of providing music and performing-arts education at Title I schools including Highland Park and Roxhill Elementaries, along with partial and full scholarships for families in need, all intended “to create equity in arts programming within our educational system.” And they’re raising money by offering you a night of food, drinks, music, theater, and fun! 6:55 AM: Good morning and welcome to the new week! No official alert so far but a tipster says a stalled semitruck is blocking a lane near the NB I-5 entrance at the east end of the eastbound bridge.

99 CLOSURE THIS WEEKEND: Southbound 99 is scheduled to close between the West Seattle Bridge and Battery Street Tunnel late Friday night through early Monday (October 12th-15th).

Voting for the general election starts in less than 2 weeks. The most hotly contested race on local ballots is for 34th District State Senator, with Joe Nguyen and Shannon Braddock emerging from an 11-candidate primary. The latest major appearance by both was at this past Thursday night’s North Highline Unincorporated Area Council meeting in White Center; we recorded it on video and you can watch the unedited hour-and-a-half-long forum above. We’ve also noted key points in text below (after the jump if you are reading from the front page) – not full transcriptions, just excerpted points, but perhaps of interest if you don’t have time to watch the video or go see one of their upcoming appearances (listed below):

Though city-sanctioned Camp Second Chance is on the west side of Myers Way, illegal camping on the east side has long been a concern of the C2C Community Advisory Committee, whose meeting today included new info about the recent cleanup in that area.
On hand in the community room at Arrowhead Gardens were committee chair Willow Fulton and members Judi Carr, Grace Stiller, Cinda Stenger, and Aaron Garcia. Camp operator LIHI was represented by Josh Castle and on-site case manager Richard Horne as well as C2C co-founder and camp manager Eric Davis. The city had extra representatives at the meeting to talk about the cleanup and what’s next for the area – August Drake-Ericson, manager of the Navigation Team; Lisa Gustaveson of the Human Services Department; Patrick Merriam and Jon Jainga of Seattle Parks. Also there to talk about the city’s efforts to get more affordable housing built was Dan Foley of the Seattle Office of Housing.
CAMP REPORT: Davis started with a short, emotional tribute to a founding C2C member who he said died recently of cancer. Then the current numbers:
Memories, stories, and songs filled The Hall at Fauntleroy this afternoon, as family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Jackie Dupras. Her longtime activism and advocacy included singing with the Seattle Labor Chorus; some of those who had sung with her led songs in her honor:
Jackie’s husband of almost four decades, Ed Dupras, offered a toast to his wife’s “spirit”:

Microphones were available for anyone moved to get up and talk about Jackie; tributes included memories of her dedication to people as well as to causes. She was long active with the 34th District Democrats, who honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award seven years ago. That group’s highest-profile members were there today too:
Along with County Executive Dow Constantine and County Councilmember Joe McDermott, other local leaders there to remember Jackie included School Board President Leslie Harris and City Councilmember Lisa Herbold. Jackie was 74.
ADDED MONDAY NIGHT: Steve Butts has written a detailed tribute to Jackie for the just-posted monthly 34th District Democrats’ newsletter. The agenda for the group’s monthly meeting Wednesday (7 pm October 11th, Hall at Fauntleroy) includes a time to share memories.
South-end coffee fans might have noticed drive-up espresso outlet Mocha Mojo in a new spot today. It was moved by crane Saturday afternoon from its longtime spot on the east side of the Roxbury Auto Parts lot, and now it’s a short distance west, at the 30th/Roxbury 76 station. We’re working on a separate story about the shutdown of the auto-parts store – red-tagged by King County for structural trouble involving its back wall, according to the county website – but in the short run, we’re mentioning the MM move, which in turn has put the Thai-U-Up food truck on the other side of the 76 lot:

12:45 PM: Seattle Fire is sending a “rescue extrication” response to a one-car crash reported at 35th and Roxbury. The driver is reported to be trapped in the vehicle.
12:52 PM: Avoid the area – the emergency response is blocking at least part of the intersection.
12:59 PM: The driver has been cut out of the car. A passenger is injured too. The crash is on the southwest corner by Summit Atlas. Photo added.
1:12 PM: The wooden pole hit by the driver is still standing, not in our photo – slightly to the south.
The driver and passenger, meantime, are both being taken to the hospital.
2:09 PM: Just passed through 35th/Roxbury on the way to another (non-breaking) story. The intersection is open; the car was about to be towed.

9:20 PM: Thanks for the tips. Big police response right now at Delridge/Juneau as police investigate gunfire. No injuries; officers have more than a dozen evidence markers in the street (Juneau east of Delridge) and some damage is reported at Longfellow Creek Apartments on the other side of the intersection.

One more local football game report – Seattle Lutheran hosted Evergreen Lutheran at West Seattle Stadium this afternoon. The visitors went home with the win, 50-18, but the Saints scored three TDs – two by #7 Zach Carver:

5:09 PM: Thanks to Betsy for the photo and report: Beach Drive by Constellation Park south of Alki Point is blocked by a crew working on a water break. We don’t know yet how many customers are affected.
6:03 PM: Just went by to check (photo added). The Seattle Public Utilities crew tells us they haven’t yet reached the actual break, so this is going to take a while longer.
After about a week, a dead California sea lion that had been on the beach at Jack Block Park is gone. David Hutchinson of Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network shares the photo and explains its disposition:
Friday, a team from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (Marine Mammal Investigations) and SR3 (Sealife Response, Rehabilitation & Research), in cooperation with the Port of Seattle, removed an 8-foot long California sea lion carcass from the public beach at Jack Block Park. Seal Sitters coordinated this response, monitoring the carcass’s condition and location until a permit to tow and sink could be obtained through NOAA from the Environmental Protection Agency. Before removal, a necropsy was performed and samples were taken for further analysis. The remains were then towed and sunk at the designated location.
Seal Sitters is a member of NOAA’s West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network. We respond to reports of live or dead marine mammals on the beaches of West Seattle from Brace point through the Duwamish River including Harbor Island. If you spot a marine mammal on our local beaches, please call Seal Sitters’ Hotline at 206-905-7325.
Look what’s back – mountain snow! Lynn Hall photographed the morning glow on The Brothers early today. The National Weather Service notes that Friday was relatively cold down here at sea level, too – in more than 120 years of recordkeeping, Friday’s high of 53 degrees was the lowest October 5th high ever recorded. (The old record was 54 degrees on October 5, 2007.)

West Seattle High School #80 Tom Nguyen‘s opening performances represented one of two highlights from the Wildcats’ home game against Ingraham last night. He got WSHS out to a 14-0 start over the Rams with two touchdowns in the first few minutes of the game – first a massive run shortly after the opening kickoff, second on a pass from #2 Cyrus Storlie with 7:15 to go in the first quarter. Unfortunately, that’s all the scoring the Wildcats mustered, and though the defense held Ingraham scoreless until 3:59 remained in the first half, the Rams made up for that and went home with a 28-14 win. However, the other bright spot: Festivities for WSHS Senior Night! Players, cheer squad members, and band musicians in the Class of 2019 were honored at halftime, since this was the last regular-season home game:

It was the fourth win in a row last night for the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks: 48-31 over Lakeside at Northwest Athletic Complex. Sealth is now 4-2 and wraps up the regular season with two home games at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), starting at 7 pm next Friday (October 12th) vs. Sammamish.

As recommended in connection with the plea bargain we reported here a week and a half ago, Gregory L. Thompson of Puget Ridge has received a prison-based DOSA (Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative). According to the online hearing record, King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer sentenced Thompson to 20 months in prison – minus credit for time served – including the prison-based drug treatment that’s a component of DOSA. Thompson’s plea bargain covered several cases in which he had been charged; the theft of fish that had just been delivered to Seattle Fish Company in The Junction last June was the highest-profile case involved. Other cases involved drugs, a stolen vehicle, and witness tampering.

7:57 PM: If you have to head eastbound on the West Seattle Bridge, you won’t be able to do it from the Fauntleroy entrance for a while – a crash is blocking all eastbound lanes close to where the bridge goes over Avalon/Spokane. SFD and SPD are on scene.
8:16 PM: Police are blocking the 35th/Fauntleroy entrance to the bridge. Your nearest alternative is the ramp from Avalon/Spokane. No word on injuries in the crash, meantime, but all three dispatched SFD units are still on the call.
8:31 PM: One eastbound lane just reopened. Per commenters, multiple vehicles were involved. We’ll be checking with SFD re: injuries.
9:01 PM: SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley tells us one person had to be taken to the hospital.
