UPDATE: 2 OK after their car2go vehicle goes sideways in Seaview

7:26 AM: Seattle Fire is sending a big “heavy rescue” response to the 6000 block of 44th SW [map], where a car is reported to be on its side, with one person possibly trapped. More to come.

7:41 AM: Photo added. The vehicle that went sideways is a car2go Smart Fortwo car. Two people were inside, our crew has learned at the scene, and both got out OK, no injuries. At least one parked car is damaged.

7:52 AM: Another photo. Tow truck has already arrived and SFD has left so the street should be clear before long.

My worst fear driving one of these 😳😳

Glad everyone is ok, but I’m curious to know just how a car ends up like this on a residential street where speeds shouldn’t be in excess of 20MPH.

As noted in discussions of sideways/rolled cars, speed is NOT required. If you hit something else at just the correct angle … wham. That goes for these cars, according to a quick Google (no link is more authoritative than another so far as I have found, so if you’re interested, pull your own search and decide what to look at) … TR

I remember when “tipping” them was not uncommon.  These things scare me also and I ride a motorcycle.

How, exactly do you DO that?

There’s a stop sign on the S end of that block too.

There’s a special phenomenon that’s happened in West Seattle. Someday in our near future we may be in the Guinness World Records for the most cars being sideways. Such an honor to be in our little community.

I know.. right? Hasn’t even been 48 hrs. since the sideways Harbor Ave. roller! West Seattle wins again!

I’ll never understand why these accidents happen on residential streets where the speed limit is 20 or 30 MPH.

That’s what happens when you sneeze in a SmartCar.

I was just joking about how they could be lifted up and turned backwards in parking spaces.   :)

While in highschool (mid 70’s…Rock-on!!) there were two guys on our swim/waterpolo teams who had VW’s, one ‘Bug’ and one Karmann Ghia, which we would turn-around, turn-sideways (on all 4 tires, not onto a door) or move all together simply by lifting with enough people.

Not hard to do at all!

Maybe we just have a different interpretation of the movie title and are trying to emulate.

Just bring a can opener :)

I’m glad no one hurt but I’m telling you there is a huge magnet under the streets of WS and when they feel someone driving over the speed limit it pulls them onto their side to slow them down!

Look at the second picture where it show the turtle belly.  Old cars have a heavy frame.  That is what keeps their center of gravity low and less likely to flip.

Was it “spicey ” coffee maybe?

  • PantsOnFire March 25, 2017 (10:46 pm)

Silly Goose, what did you see? 👀

  • Quiz March 26, 2017 (7:51 am)

There was just one person trapped in the car. No passengers. I helped him out. He was fine, though a little embarrassed.

That’s what I heard via the scanner initially but at the scene, police/fire told Patrick two people…

Sorry, comment time is over.
