VIADUCT CLOSURE OVER: Both directions now open

As of a few minutes ago, the northbound Alaskan Way Viaduct [“live” camera above] has reopened, following the southbound side [“live” camera below] by about half an hour.

And that concludes the almost-ten-day closure, five hours after today’s surprise announcement of an early ending to what was expected to be a shutdown lasting about two weeks. Full backstory in our afternoon report published right after the news broke.

8:18 PM: Carol points out in a comment that the ramp from the EB bridge is still blocked off – the camera verifies – so crews haven’t gotten there yet.

8:51 PM: WSDOT says the ramp is open now. (Here’s the camera view.)

9:18 PM: Thanks again to everybody who helped out by sharing commute reports this past week and a half – and remember that we have long been reporting on the morning commute every weekday, so we’ll be back at it tomorrow (just not quite as early!). And remember, another major project is ahead – overnight closures of the west end of the bridge, starting in a week, for the Fauntleroy Expressway seismic-cushion re-replacements.

9:58 PM: Just in case you missed this earlier: Metro’s plan:

All Metro routes that normally serve the Alaskan Way Viaduct will return to their regular routes and stops at the start of service Monday morning, May 9. … With the start of service on Monday, the bus stop on westbound Columbia Street at Second Avenue will reopen to regular transit service, and Viaduct buses will no longer serve the temporary stops they made in the SODO area on or near S Lander Street during last week’s closure.

All riders should note that Viaduct service will remain on the current reroutes throughout Sunday night and until about 4:30 AM on Monday.

And the Water Taxi will continue its extra West Seattle parking and extra Vashon runs for one last day, tomorrow morning. Then everything is back to normal Tuesday.

That’s great news… I have no need to drive on it at the moment, but for all of those who need to go that way tonight and in the morning… YAY for them.. Nice job Bertha… you got it done right this time :)

    Woot woot

  • Frank May 8, 2016 (7:48 pm)

Wow.  As much as I am surprised to say this, well done WSDOT.  They under-promised and over-delivered.

They should be commended, and other local government agencies should take a PR and planning lesson here.  There was another aspect of this that I thought was smart – starting on a Friday. That way, if they had gotten behind, they could have bought themselves 3 more tunneling days with just one extra added weekday closure.

Thank you WSB for your viaduct coverage over the past 10 days.

  • Admiral Mom May 8, 2016 (8:05 pm)

    Bertha for President!

    • chemist May 9, 2016 (10:26 am)

“Build a giant tunnel” would make an interesting policy mandate.

  • seattletimebandit May 8, 2016 (8:07 pm)

I’ve never wanted Bertha to move so far and so fast since this all started. Our long (well actually shorter than expected) regional nightmare is over…

  • Carol May 8, 2016 (8:08 pm)

Eastbound on WS bridge at 8 pm … 99 n/b still blocked off.

    • WSB May 8, 2016 (8:17 pm)

Thanks! We will go check on that.

      • WSB May 8, 2016 (8:39 pm)

Update, the crew is on the ramp now so shouldn’t be too long. Lot of barrels to move, though.

  • carolei May 8, 2016 (8:55 pm)

Thank you WSDOT and thank you WSB!

  • Admiral Mom 2! May 8, 2016 (9:01 pm)

Admiral Mom–I second that nomination. Bertha 2016!!

  • Kristen May 8, 2016 (9:17 pm)

A few folks a little hesitant to be the first bak on it tomorrow morning – let us know how it goes ;)

I do hope West Seattleites appreciate and acknowledge the important role that the WSB played in this inconvience we experienced the last week and a half. If not for them, the retrofit  project under the bridge, the restricted parking  issue on Harbor Ave., etc. would have gone on, impacting us even more than the 99 project itself.  Because of their diligence in following through on readers questions and concerns, this neighborhood could have been even more severely impacted! THANK YOU WSB for being such a wonderful asset to this community!

Thank you for the kind words! The community contributions were vital. Always have been, always will be. 206-293-6302 text or voice 24/7, or editor@wsb.blackfin.biz if not urgent :)

Here Here. I agree, I don’t live in West Seattle but used to. I live in QA and have used the Blog to find most updates on 99 as Queen Anne does not have such a comprehensive website with real time information.

    • Blinkyjoe May 9, 2016 (8:57 am)

Hear, hear…in spades. WSB is so unique as a community info portal. TRACY RECORDS FOR CITY OF SEATTLE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR!

      • WSB May 9, 2016 (9:27 am)

Funny. No, I’ve no interest in going into PR, government or private sector, but I do have to say that WSDOT (state, not city) organized a pretty great communication plan for the past week and a half. Laura Newborn, who was in charge of it, organizing the conference calls and in-person briefings among many other things, is a former veteran journalist; we worked together for a while at a Seattle TV station in the ’90s. – TR

Better than the other two Admiral mom.

  • dan May 9, 2016 (12:04 am)

I don’t believe Bertha was born in the USA so she can’t be president.  Don’t try to nominate or you might people demanding to see her birth certificate.

    • Admiral Mom May 9, 2016 (7:40 am)

This made my day. I m ready to face the morning commute.

  • dsa May 9, 2016 (12:37 am)

So we are stuck with one of the other two.

  • Dana May 9, 2016 (5:19 am)

I agree with the others – thank you WSB for all of the coverage of the commute and viaduct closure (and all your work covering the rest of our community!) It is very much appreciated

  • BBB May 9, 2016 (8:08 am)

Bummer WSDOT or SDOT or whoever is responsible for repairing potholes couldn’t have used last week’s closure to repair roadway potholes and expansion joints.  Guess they’ll have to schedule another shutdown for that.  Nevertheless, grateful to have viaduct back in service, and grateful to WSB for all of their efforts these past few weeks..

  • Pat May 9, 2016 (8:51 am)

Time stamps on cameras had me confused, but I guess they’re wrong.  Ahead by 7 hours?  (At least they are at present….)

    • WSB May 9, 2016 (9:28 am)

Pat, thanks for pointing that out. I noticed it last night. Will call it to somebody’s attention if it’s not fixed. Or anybody who has the chance can call 206-684-ROAD and report it … TR

  • RayWest May 9, 2016 (7:12 pm)

I guess most people missed the memo, because there was hardly any traffic the bridge on-ramp and on 99 this morning, and it was very light on the viaduct for the evening commute. I am so relieved and excited by the early re-opening. By sheer luck, I was off work last week, and was dreading commuting this week, but all is back to normal. Okay, drilling a tunnel and endless delays and breakdowns is not “normal” but you know . . .

Sorry, comment time is over.
