  I’m so glad someone caught this dog. I’ve seen him/her three days this week from Lincoln park to up near ladro over the hill. I tried to get him but he wouldn’t cooperate and kept running off. Seemed hungry. I’m so grateful for the person who rescued him!

  Nice work and thank you Jim. Please let the West Seattle community what this now lucky dog needs. Thank you to the WSB for keeping on top of this story. It is always nice to see how West Seattle comes together to help.

  Please be careful to not let the dog go to just anyone who says they are the owner. I have heard so many horrible stories about dogs that are rescued but they end up claimed by a false owner and put the dog in a dog fighting ring.

  Thank you to the rescuers as I attempted several times & was going to take food for the dog today as have been concerned about the dog. Another example of how well our WSB works. Thank you to everyone. Hopefully owner can be found!

  Poor sweetheart probably got freaked out by all the fireworks. I hope she finds her people soon. And if they don’t come forward, I hope this dog gets a wonderful new home to live out her days.

  We will search for the owner for 30 days. After that, she will be adopted by a family that we have screened and checked their home. If anyone is possibly interested in adopting her at the end of the 30 days, they can contact us through our web page, http://www.uselessbaysanctuary.org

  I strongly suspect the dog was dumped. One of the comments on the lost pets page, indicates that the dog has been in the Lincoln Park area for several weeks before the 4th of July. The dog is in good hands with Jim. He mentioned getting it scanned for a chip and then over to the Seattle Animal Shelter. He knows what he is doing and will keep the dog safe. I am sure he will post an update too. I am just so sorry that people have been noticing the dog for weeks and nothing was done until now. At least she is now safe, fed, watered, and sheltered.

    Thanks, Bree – All we do is keep the website going and try to make connections. Even in this era in which more people have ways to reach the public directly, many of those ways are still somewhat fragmented/silo’ized – like Facebook pages for groups or businesses, or neighborhood-only mailing lists – and there remains value in having a place with wider reach, like WSB … and then once the info’s out, others pick up the ball and run with it, as happened here; while I’m just sitting here at the table writing and publishing and researching, etc., animal advocates actually went out and found and trapped the dog and I hope that either its home or a new home will be found. Re: the mention of weeks, only one person said that – we only heard about it a few days ago, and as I wrote, while a one-off report of “I saw a dog on the run” is generally just taken under advisement, once we got a couple reports (and thanks to the people who sent them!), it was clear this wasn’t just a case of a dog out for a stroll.

    P.S. Please note that what can be seen on our pages does not represent all our communication re: lost/found pets … we also wind up in e-mail, phone, text conversations, even tweets, offering advice (take in for a chip check, canvass the neighborhood, etc.) that we’ve learned from animal advocates over the years. – and at least once a week, “lost” and “found” notes about the same pet arrive simultaneously, so we point them to each other without anything ever needing to be posted on the site. And while some people try to post lost pets on the WSB Facebook page, for example, Facebook is not searchable and not a good clearinghouse, so we very specifically emphasize one webpage, and over the years word about it has gotten around.

  Some of the full time traveling community pick up animals to aid in getting cup and bowl donations. Some of the animals might have owners somewhere who just do not know where they are. I’m not sure how one would do it but some kind of proof should be required to retrieve a lost pet.

  I wish I was in a position to adopt that dog, my GSD would love to have a playmate, but due to a new baby I dont think it’s in the cards

  That’s great that they found the dog but in all likelihood this dog will be put down. That’s the sad reality of what happens to adult dogs like this. Sad, but true.

  Ripper you will be glad to know about the Seattle Animal Shelter. One of its functions is to ‘Care for the city’s lost and unwanted animals’

      Addendum – I have sent the heeler’s owner a note. She also noted that the heeler had a chip – Jim had said he didn’t find one at first but was going to look again. I can’t try to contact him right now (maybe he will come back and look here) as I have just a few minutes to finish the next (unrelated) story before rushing off to an appointment.   I saw this dog twice in LP and tried to catch her but there was absolutely no way she would let us even get close! Good job Jim & WSB for rescuing her. I hated to see how afraid she looked as she was running thru the park with her tale between her legs. 😢 Please keep us posted on her status.

  I saw this dog on Marshall Ave SW in the Seaview neighborhood headed towards LP on either July 5th or 6th. Glad to see there’s an effort to find the owner.

  AU: Wrong. That pertains to “adoptable” animals. This dog probably won’t get that status and will be killed. Even Seattle shelters have a high kill rate for animals they deem unadoptable. We can post all the feel good stuff we want on blogs, but reality is far starker.

  This is a big reason why many animal welfare orgs recommend that puppies for sale, lost dogs etc aren’t posted to Craigslist.

  ripper, what makes you believe this dog isn’t adoptable? The local animal shelters have a large foster program and a relatively low kill rate. Not to mention, the publicity this dog has received on this site increases the liklihood that this dog will be placed in a foster environment and/or adopted out. In addition, the dog was captured by Useless Bay Sanctuary, a dog rescue organization. Organizations like this typcially have a large network of animal rescues and foster resources. M.L

  Total euthanasia 136
  shelter animal kills =136. So out of 1213 stray dogs taken in 136 were put to death.
  Ripper are you here just to argue?
  I was merely letting you know that in Seattle the animal shelter puts much effort and resources into NOT killing animals. Read about the shelter instead of thinking your assumptions are facts.
