West Seattleites behind the scenes at NW Folklife Festival

Going to Seattle Center for the Northwest Folklife Festival next weekend? Though it’s not happening in West Seattle, three West Seattleites are involved in making it happen, as we recently found out. One of them – Deputy Director Debbie Fant – explains:

West Seattle is really well represented at the 2013 Northwest Folklife Festival! First of all, the programming team — Kelli Faryar, Michelle Demers Shaevitz, and Debbie Fant — all live in West Seattle! And second, there are 34 groups from West Seattle performing throughout the weekend!! (Not that we’re biased — there’s just so much talent in West Seattle!)

If you’re among those Folklife performers from West Seattle (or White Center/South Park, since we cover those communities with our other two sites), please let us know (comment, or e-mail editor@wsb.blackfin.biz) so we can include that in weekend mentions. Here’s the schedule – even if you’re not the performer, let us know if you recognize locals who are listed.

West Seattle based Singer/Songwriter Carl Tosten will be playing on the Fisher Green stage Saturday at 3:40. He’s been a regular at Folklife since 2007, and was featured on Folklife’s Roots and Branches CD in 2011. carltosten.com or facebook.com/CarlTosten.

It’s great that the WSB is covering residents’ contribution to this major Seattle event, as well as all the other helpful news you gather. We also really appreciate all the work that Kelli, Michelle and Debbie do to pull Folklife together each year. We are big fans of Folklife.

Choro Tocando – a flute and guitar duo – plays Brazilian choro. Flutist KTzinha aka Karen Tsao resides in Fauntleroy. Since 2011, our group has played monthly for the C&P Coffee at the second Thursday wine tasting and art event. We have also played for the Alki Summer Streets and Alki Street Fair the past two years.

At Folklife, we will be presenting, along with a fellow musician from PDX, a demonstration of Brazilian choro music. The workshop is called Choro: Brazil’s Oldest New Beat and will be in the Olympic Room on Monday, May 27 from 2 to 2:50 pm.
