SDOT reminder about tonight’s West Seattle Bridge closures

In case you missed it in our morning preview – the Fauntleroy Expressway and eastbound Spokane Street Viaduct are both closed tonight (and other nights). SDOT has just sent media organizations another reminder (and published it on their blog-format On The Move site):

Nighttime closures of the Fauntleroy Expressway (at the west end of the West Seattle Bridge) and the eastbound lanes of the Spokane Street Viaduct (the structure that links east end of the West Seattle Bridge to I-5) continue as scheduled, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights.

During the closures, westbound traffic on the West Seattle Bridge is directed to use the Delridge Way Southwest off-ramp.

Eastbound drivers on Fauntleroy Way Southwest will be detoured at Southwest Avalon Way and will be directed to the Southwest Spokane Street entrance to the West Seattle Bridge under the Fauntleroy Expressway, east of Avalon Way.

Once on the West Seattle Bridge, eastbound traffic will use either the First Avenue S off-ramp or the Fourth Avenue Loop ramp—one or the other of these will remain open during each of these closures. On some nights the work will also require the closure of the lower eastbound roadway of surface Spokane Street. In such cases, motorists wishing to access the I-5 ramps or Columbian Way S will be detoured north to S Lander St, then east to Sixth Avenue S, south onto Sixth and proceed to S Spokane Street, where they can turn east onto the appropriate on-ramp.

The eastbound lanes of the Spokane Street Viaduct will be closed each weekday night through Friday, February 17. The Fauntleroy Expressway closures will occur regularly until the project’s completion in June 2012. No additional weekend closures are scheduled at this time for either project.

Additional project details about the Spokane Street Viaduct can be found at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/spokanestreet.htm, and for the Fauntleroy Expressway at

Are they going to repaint the lines on the bridge soon? The lines right now are super confusing and it’s hard to tell if there’s actually still two lanes there..

Jones, have you driven since last Friday? Supposedly the lines were repainted – at least on the westbound, east end of the bridge… TR

Ummmm…excuse my ignorance, but after almost 20 years living in West Seattle, I must confess–I have no idea what the “Fauntleroy Expressway” is. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks! :)

Hi, ILWS, new to WSB? We’ve been covering this project for some months now. Anyway, it’s the west end of the high bridge. If you follow the link to the Fauntleroy Expressway info, you’ll also find a link to our recent story going behind the scenes on the construction work. Thanks – TR

Northbound on I5 at 11pm tonight the sign stated ”Exit 163 ramp to WS Bridge closed. Use alternate routes.” From the SDOT info, this was never described. I took the Michigan exit rather than test the validity of the sign. What the hell? Was WSDOT up to something on the ramp alone? Was I faked out by poor signage? Looking at Google maps the traffic was moving just fine westbound.

That’s odd indeed. If you were going to get onto the bridge westbound, the only complication should have been the Fauntleroy Expressway cutting short the other end, with exits required no later than Delridge.

Thanks TR! I am only ” new” to the commenting part of WSB, have been a faithful reader for at least 3 years. You guys do a great job, we can always count on you for all sorts of info, be it traffic, civic events or helicopters hovering over our house on Gatewood Hill…keep up the good work! :)

Sorry, comment time is over.
