Concerned about next year’s school start times? Meeting TODAY

Late notice on this one but if it’s an issue that concerns you, the Sanislo Elementary PTA tells us all are welcome: At 5:30 pm at Sanislo (1812 SW Myrtle), there’s a meeting with local School Board rep (and board president) Steve Sundquist about next year’s start times, which, as reported here earlier this month, are changing for some schools – in Sanislo’s case, they’ll wind up starting after 9:30 am.

9:30am? Wow. I guess the parents of Sanislo students don’t have to work for a living, or the Seattle Public Schools doesn’t think they do. What the heck?!

I think that is a great start time!

Yes 9:30am is not ideal. However, public school is NOT daycare. If both parents are working then shouldn’t they be able to afford some sort of care?

Kind of off topic but does anyone know when the last day of high school is this year? Those of us down in Alki need to start getting ready. This year I plan on calling 911 the day before.

Last day for middle and high schools is Thursday June 23rd. For elementary and K-8, it’s Tuesday 6/21.

No, public school isn’t daycare. But not all working parents have jobs that allow them to access adequate and affordable daycare, or to flex their schedules to accomodate this strange start time. Many of our parents both work and still qualify for free/reduced lunch. As those of you paying for it know, childcare you’d feel safe leaving your children in is not cheap. Before and after school care can easily run more than $500 a month.

….Bell times at 9:35 also mean our kids aren’t in a classroom and learning until nearly 9:50. Parents have to drop their kids and run to work, and therefore have no time to check in with teachers, do a quick volunteer job, or even just talk with the parents of their children’s peers.

….This strange start time undermines the educational environment, erodes parent engagement, and yes, for those families who can’t afford it, burdens them with the difficult decision to either treat the school grounds like an unsupervised daycare and drop their kids early, or pay $$ many don’t have much of to begin with to place their children in daycare.

9:30 is a great start time..for saturday soccer games, an early brunch on Sunday or if you live on a planet where the work day starts at 10.

Working parents aside many kids get up early and to wait hours for school to start is a waste of time. I have friends whose kids get up at 6am. (mine don’t) If they don’t start until 9:30am there is a few hours there. I guess homework could be done in the morning.

@PreschoolFather — Nice display of total ignorance of the world around you. There’s a family at our school whose kids were sleeping on the floor because they didn’t own a mattress. Go back to your world of TV families and leave the comments to those who heads aren’t up their…

We had to put up with a 9:25a start time during the past year. I, for one, am happy to hear that start times at Whittier will be earlier next year.

Sorry, comment time is over.
