Another West Seattle rescue: Injured gull on Alki

Second story of kindness that we’ve been privileged to receive and share this afternoon. This one’s from Zibby:

This morning I was walking on Alki around 11:30 when I noticed a large, adult glaucous -winged gull sitting in the middle of Alki Avenue, just in front of Pioneer Coffee. Traffic was crazy so I ran into the street and tried to shoo it out of the way – it was obviously injured, so I picked it up and took it down to the water where I watched it wobble and fall over quite a few times before deciding to get it away from the crowds.

I carried it over to Pioneer Coffee where a sweet employee found me a box and a neighbor gave me some material to cover the box with. …

I ended up taking the gull to PAWS wildlife rehabilitation center in Lynnwood. It made it through the long ride in traffic and they said it looked like he/she had likely been hit by a car or injured in some other manner. Anyhow, here’s to hoping the little one makes it and an update for everyone who helped out and was concerned.

From the PAWS website, here’s information on what to do if you encounter injured wildlife.

Thanks for helping an injured animal. Major props to you! PAWS is a wonderful organization. If anyone can bring this bird back to nature, they can.
    Good karma to you…

Thanks everyone for your kind comments but really, all the thanks goes to the folks at the PAWS wildlife center for teaching me when – and, more often, when not – to get involved. If I get any updates I’ll be sure to send them to WSB!

You are awesome!…and ‘yes’ so is PAWSs, but it takes people like you to get the ball rolling. Most people wouldn’t have gone through the trouble.

OH…and thanks for not calling the bird a Seagull. :-)

PAWS Wildlife is wonderful at educating, rescuing & rehabilitating. You too are critical to that effort. You took action, for many reasons, not all humans decide to make/take the time but you did. You are humble, even more to appreciate.

Zibby – thank you, thank you. It’s so wonderful to hear about someone taking the time to help an animal in need.

Thanks again to everyone for your concern and kind comments – one of the things I love best about West Seattle is how much everyone appreciates the nature and animals in it.

Sorry to say there is sad news to report on the gull…he did not make it. West Seattleite and PAWS naturalist Kevin reported back this morning “the intake information said that he was emaciated, so he had some sort of major, chronic problem going on. Sorry the news wasn’t better…”

At least the gull was in the best of hands if something could have been done. Oh well :(

Sorry, comment time is over.
