West Seattle coyotes: First-time sighting shared

Latest coyote-sighting report is from Val:

Thanks to your great coverage, I do know we have coyotes in WSeattle, but this is the first time I’ve seen one here myself. I live at the end of Webster off of Delridge and I got to my patio this morning just in time to see a coyote departing, loping along the property line. Makes me glad my cat’s always been an indoor cat! Just thought I’d pass the sighting along.

Previous sightings shared with us are archived here, newest to oldest (many with photos, even a little video here and there). Along with the usual “coexisting with coyotes” info, we decided to check online to see the latest coyote-related news from, well, anywhere, to see how the rest of the country is dealing with them. Not coexisting-mindedly, it seems; in Texas, there’s legislation for aerial hunting; in Rhode Island, a town is hiring a hunter to kill “rogue” coyotes.

I just posted a sighting 3 hours ago as a comment on the March 21st posting but I will put it here also. Saw a large, healthy looking coyote today at 8 am and yesterday at 1 pm on 27th and Webster.
It was walking along the front yards, looking in between houses and approached my neighbor’s front door twice. I’m sure this is the same ‘family’ as Val mentioned, same wooded area.

After many years in West Seattle, my dog and I finally had the pleasure of a staring contest with a coyote – from a safe distance. Spotted this morning on SW Seattle Street between California and 42nd at about 8:30am. We watched each other for a good long pause before the coyote took off running. Beautiful animal.

I live in Highpoint on 30th ave sw and he was behind our back fence last week trying to catch a squirrel by jumping up in a tree. It was so funny. He is a very beautiful, healthy looking creature. Not like the scrawny coyotes I remember from growing up in Eastern Wa. Keep your cats indoors!!

My husband saw the coyote on Webster yesterday morning also while walking our dog about 7:30 am -came out of the alley between 31st and 30th SW, headed east down the hill on Webster – said the coyote looked at our terrier for awhile like he was coyote bait!

Our coyotes are well-fed, and our songbird population is increasing. Wonder if there’s a connection.

saw one this evening 4/7 at about 8:45 on Avalon Way where I live. sat at the top of the stairs from the road to my apartment. wasn’t phased by my dog, which is probably bigger than it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
