We have been SO overdue for cute owl photos, ever since the charming saga of Wollet over the summer. And now, our unspoken wish is granted, courtesy of Jonathan French, who says his neighbor northwest of The Junction – proprietor of Better Coops and Gardens – has had this little visitor around all day in her carport workshop … watching her build chicken coops!

Yep, that’s a saw-whet owl. They are so awesome looking. I’ll never forget the first one I ever saw. I was in the UW arboretum and I pulled back the branches a bit on a leafy bush to see the label and hiding there was a saw-whet owl! It never even moved. Found out since that it is very typical for them to sit tight until the last moment.
Send him/her to Fauntleroy too!
The little owl moved off the saw to the top of one of the coops then slept the day away until 5:00 pm he/she then took off to hunt. I believe it is a Northern Saw-Whet owl. It is about 6″ tall and lives on a diet of rodents.
I have promised it a space heater and more privacy if it will agree to reside permanentely in my garage

Last week, my husband and I were inside and it was very dark. I thought I heard something hit the window. He jumped up and sure enough, an owl was sitting on one of my planters. He sat a long time, long enough to get a photo but it did not turn out very well, then he flew off.
We live near 100th over the Fauntleroy Ferry close to Lincoln Park so I think we must have seen the Barred Owl. It was an amazing experience.
