West Seattle neighborhood-plan meeting topline: Big turnout

It’ll take us a few hours to do the story justice in long form so for now, we’ll just publish a quick topline: More than 100 people filled the air-conditioned Youngstown Arts Center auditorium for tonight’s long-awaited Neighborhood Plan Status Check meeting. The photo above doesn’t even show them all – the floor of the auditorium held the groups for Admiral, Delridge, Highland Park/Westwood and Morgan Junction (as well as Georgetown), while the stage held the biggest group of all (not pictured here), for The Junction. One thing you can do RIGHT NOW, whether you attended or not – take an online survey. Meeting organizers say the neighborhood that’s turned in the most so far is Ballard with about 150 – certainly West Seattle can beat that! Go here; deadline is August 11. And watch for our full report (focused on The Junction – the heart of WS – with scenes from the other tables too) later.

I would have taken the survey but my neighborhood (Gatewood/Fauntleroy) wasn’t represented. Many weren’t. That leaves a lot of West Seattle out.

These are the 5 areas for which neighborhood plans were made in West Seattle 10 years ago – I’ve now heard varying explanations of why not all were included, so I’ve stopped summarizing. As for this section of Gatewood/Fauntleroy, I believe a largely residential stretch – like the big residential zone between The Junction and Morgan Junction wasn’t eligible, mostly SF zoning, not much business, etc. Nonetheless, I would suggest anyone whose WS neighborhood isn’t in a plan consider speaking out about The Junction in particular, in which we all have a stake. (And on this side of town, we all have a stake in Morgan Junction, too, as well as Westwood …) – TR

As TR mentioned, you don’t have to be a resident of the neighborhood to make comments. The survey has boxes to check to explain your relationship to the area: frequent visitor, work there, etc.

i would suggest defaulting to the neighborhood urban village area where you shop or dine the most. plans were done ten years ago for the areas in west seattle that were expected to experience the most growth (usually around business districts). however, if you feel that your area is lacking a plan and has experienced this (Fauntleroy may be one) i would add this in the comments of the survey!

These meetings are focused on places where there are offical neighborhood plans which were prepared a decade ago for areas designated as Urban Villages or Urban Centers. UV’s and UC’s are targeted to take the vast majority of jobs and housing growth for the City.

I agree with Kate that you can fill one out for the area where you shop, dine, play, etc. I live on Alki but spend a whole lot of time at both WS Junsction and Admiral.

GREAT meeting last night and a lot of great dialouge amoung West Seattlites. I know West Seattle can beat Ballard by doing more on-line questionnaires! Go WS!

Sorry, comment time is over.
