Lady Washington now Alki-bound for Seafair Pirates’ Landing

Our state’s official ship is headed this way for the Seafair Pirates’ Landing on Alki this Saturday — Joe Follansbee is communications director for the Lady Washington, and sends word that it’s left its seacoast homeport:

The brig Lady Washington has made sail for Seattle and the annual Seafair Pirates’ invasion of Alki Beach in Seattle, a traditional highlight of the annual city-wide celebration. The Lady Washington departed Grays Harbor today, setting a course north along the Washington coast, then through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and then south into Puget Sound. The ship is scheduled to arrive at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle on Thursday. The stop at Shilshole Bay will include public tours. On Saturday, the vessel will move to Lake Union Park for a five-day stay, which will also feature public tours and a three-hour sailing.

This year, the Seafair Pirates’ takeover of Alki Beach is scheduled for noon on Saturday, July 11. The ship will stand by as a Seafair landing craft disgorges its piratical passengers on the beach.

Read on for the rest of the announcement about the Lady Washington’s forthcoming Seattle visit:

During its stop at Shilshole Bay Marina, the Lady Washington will open for
walk-on tours 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, July 10. The marina is located at
7001 Seaview Avenue Northwest in Seattle. At Lake Union Park, located at 860
Terry Avenue North in Seattle, the vessel will open for walk-on tours at
these days and times: 7/12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 7/13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.;
7/14-15, 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.

On Sunday, July 12, the Lady Washington will take guests on a
family-oriented Adventure Sail, which features demonstrations of tall ship
handling, sea shanty singing, and a chance to help sail the ship. Tickets
for the Adventure Sail are $55 for adults, $45 for students, seniors, and
active military, and $35 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at
www.historicalseaport.org, or by calling 800-200-5239.

WHAT AN AWESOME PICTURE. Please tell me there is no photoshop hanky panky manipulation here. Beautiful!

You know, I’ve taken photos with the sky that blue and not only am I incapable of photo manipulation, our camera itself is pretty lame (but about to be upgraded) … it does just look like that sometimes … Anyway, the photo comes from a gallery of “media images” offered by the Lady Washington organization, fwiw – TR

What part of Alki Beach does the ship land at?

Usually just west of the bathhouse – see our pix from last year:

    It IS a stunning image.

Vanessa C: It looks to me as though the image is not a composite. The ship, water and sky were all shot together on a particularly pretty day with those wispy cirrus clouds. However it looks as though they have digitally “burned” the corners to add a bit of vignetting and draw the eye towards the middle of the picture.

Breath of FRESH air looking at that pic!

Probably shot with a polarizing filter. The dark edges were created with a ‘vignette filter’ in PS (note the dark corners – it’s all the rage now – look for it in tv ads).

there is a trick to getting skies this blue, and its common knowledge among pros – research it, I can’t tell a secret – the photo capn will send me to scurvyville – YAAARRR. I’ll be videotaping this event in HD, though, sound very picturesque.

Sorry, comment time is over.
