Hiawatha Playfield turf/lighting project: The fence is up

Thanks to Forest for the tip that fencing went up around Hiawatha Playfield in the past 24 hours or so. We’re checking with the Parks Department for an official status report, but this is likely to mean the long-awaited start of field improvements (detailed here in a story that also noted the previous project delays). The work will include new lighting (up to 90′ high) and synthetic turf, with the end result accommodating baseball, soccer and football; here’s the official project page. (Side note: The cost of this project came in at half a million less than estimated, according to Parks managers, and that’s the money now rechanneled to replace two-thirds of the funding pulled from the Delridge Skatepark at the last minute in last year’s budgeting process.) P.S. Here’s the overview rendering of the Hiawatha project from our coverage last year:

This is fantastic news for a well-used playfield that will be a further asset to our community. And it’s great to hear that the funds saved are being channeled into another much-anticipated project for our community that was nearly derailed.

Does anyone know what the distance around the track is going to be? It looks longer than the 400m (1/4 mile) standard in the picture.

I emailed with the project manager yesterday, and he said the contract with the chosen vendor started on 6/15, with a completion date in mid-November.

Speaking for the West Seattle Soccer Club, we are very excited to (finally) have another turf field besides Sealth to use for our 1400 players this fall. When Parks closes the fields in November, it is very hard to find good field space without putting the kids on the mud of our dirt fields.

    Yeehaw!

    Aaron,

That’s exactly what I was wondering. I’ve queried the project mgr. by email and will post what I discover. I just hope it isn’t some random length like 638 meters.

According to an early westseattleblog report, the track will be 400 meters. Hopefully that’s the case.

    – Gold said the track will be 400 meters with three marked lanes and a “short straightaway.”
