“Tentative” start date set for Fauntleroy Way repaving: May 26

That’s dashcam video we shot last fall showing some of the patches and bumps on just one side of the street not-so-affectionately dubbed by some “Fauntle-Rut Way.” As we’ve been reporting since the news first broke in mid-October, Fauntleroy Way is about to get repaved from the Triangle area to Morgan Junction (and as revealed in mid-March, a few extra blocks were added because the bid came in low enough to enable it). While the repaving is under way, the city also will be restriping and reconfiguring lanes (as finalized in January):

After SDOT’s paving expert Jessica Murphy told the Morgan Community Association earlier this month (WSB coverage here) that the contract had just been finalized (with Merlino Construction) and that the work would start “mid-May,” we kept checking back for word of a more specific date, as well as to ask what end of the project site would be tackled first, and here’s what we heard back:

We have tentatively set the start date for this project as May 26th, just after Memorial Day. We will begin in the north end at Alaska and work down the west side first and then work back up the east side. The schedule for the “added” area between California and Holly has not been determined (but it won’t be first!).

Even more details of the plan are expected later this week. The city’s website for the project is here (although it doesn’t yet reflect the fact the work will extend southwest to SW Holly).

This will be a great compliment to the reduced lane tunnel. Kinda like the old saying “Ya can’t get there from here”. Well, Ya can,it’s just gonna take a whole lot longer.

So from Alaska heading South, two lanes will be reduced to one? I don’t know, sounds like this will create serious back-ups in the triangle during rush hour to me…

Great on the reduced lanes, maybe people can now only travel at the actual speed limit.

Look at all those pinch points for cyclists. Can’t wait to hear about all the confrontations and accidents that will result from this project.

I doubt this reduction will result in huge back-ups. Even at peak rush hour times, when is traffic on Fauntleroy truly heavy? I’ve never seen it not flowing smoothly, and often people are simply going way too fast on this stretch.

I’m definitely looking forward to the new configuration, and even more so to the repaving. My poor scooter feels like it’s going to rattle apart when I ride down Fauntleroy :-( . Now if Alaskan Way (the surface street) could get the same treatment. It’s treacherously pocked with potholes and ruts.

Families in the Fairmount/Seaview neighborhoods — keep an eye on your kids playing outside during rush hour. Hundreds of angry commuters will be racing down your side streets to avoid the Fauntleroy congestion (just in time for Summer)!

Traffic isn’t heavy because its not ONE lane. But there are a lot of cars there during rush hour. The road is like a flowing river, dam it up and it just runs over into other areas. Aside from making room for bikes I think this is not a wise idea. Only the people who actually drive Fauntleroy often know that.

The 54 Express will be stuck in the same mess.

I live just SE of the Fauntleroy/Alaska intersection, drive it frequently and agree that reducing it to one lane each way will likely NOT create back-ups during even the heaviest of possible traffice on Fauntleroy. Even when the light is red, never is there a very large back-up of cars. As a biker I also appreciate the increased room for cyclists. The potholes and chopped up sections drive me crazy. Hooray!

    Beach Drive too please :)

I wonder if any consideration was given to putting in a few stop lights for residents coming off side-streets onto Fauntleroy?

If not, don’t rear-end me when I rush out in front of you after waiting 5 minutes for ferry and commute traffic to pass by.

Maybe if the 54X gets stuck in the same mess it will actually run on time heading back from downtown, instead of 10-15 min. early. Drives me nuts when I’m getting ready to leave work here in Belltown and I check the tracker and see that the 54X’s are all leaving way ahead of schedule. But that’s another rant for another time… ;)

This is truly the dumbest move by the city yet.

  • Brian April 27, 2009 (2:25 pm)

Keep Fauntleroy the way it is and use this plan on 35th!

  • HalT April 27, 2009 (8:46 pm)

Great idea Brian. I don’t even like to drive on 35th, let alone ride my bike on it.
Sidewalks south of Roxbury would be nice too.
    and some trees.
    …and a pony.

    Bike lane! Yay!

  • Dan\'a April 28, 2009 (3:33 pm)

    Krista,
But beach drive is already just one lane in each direction. I am not sure what else could be done to slow traffic on it.

  • Krista April 28, 2009 (3:45 pm)

    Dan\a, I meant re-pave Beach Drive

  • Krista April 28, 2009 (3:46 pm)

35th is WAY busier than Fauntleroy. I don’t see how we’re comparing apples to apples.

Sorry, comment time is over.
