Seattle recycling/trash transition snags: Pickup companies warned

Lots of discussion here following the city’s update on the recycling/trash transition Thursday, now there’s a sequel: The city is cracking down on the apartment/condo pickup problems – read on:

News release from Seattle Public Utilities:

Today Seattle Public Utilities told its waste hauler contractors that they have to show improvement in the pickup rate of dumpsters for apartment and condo locations next week or face the possibility of fines of up to $500 per day per dumpster.

Under the contract agreement between SPU and its contractors, the City can impose performance fees if the pickup goals rate is not being met.

After two weeks, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) new recycling and garbage services are exceeding pickup goals for residential collection services *currently 99.5 percent. However, SPU*s business and apartment/condo customers who have dumpster pick-up services are experiencing a five percent miss rate.

*This performance rate is unacceptable to both us and our customers so we are telling our contractors that they need to show steady improvement next week,* said Lael Hoppler, Customer Service Director for Seattle Public Utilities.

In an effort to deal with missed pick ups, SPU has: Expanded SPU*s customer service 206-684-3000 call center hours so people can contact a service representative Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. * 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. * 1 p.m.

Placed inspectors on the ground shadowing contractor services to help catch and deal with issues as they arise, such as missed pickup locations, computer glitches, and access to dumpsters that have locked gates.

*I urge our customers to call our 206-684-3000 customer service line so we can make sure their service expectations are being met,* added Hoppler.

On March 30, SPU changed solid waste collection services for its 165,000 business and residential accounts. These changes included new garbage, recycling, food and yard waste collection routes, collection days and new recycling services.

Rates went up, too.

We have two dumpsters at a North Admiral apartment that were missed last Friday and finally picked up Wednesday after a Monday morning phone call to SPU. My manager will check this evening to see if we got picked up today…I’m sure your eager to find out if we got missed again this week…I’ll fill you in as soon as I find out ;)Also 2 1/2 weeks ago I reported to SPU a hole in one of the dumpsters. Some of the garbage falls through the bottom. I was told they are busy and will replace the dumpster…as of yet we are still waiting for the new dumpster.

Our condo in N Admiral was missed last week – I will check and report if we were missed again. And its not just the new system – the contractors that serve this area are awful about missing pickups for the condos/apartments.

So we DID get picked up today! Alas, though we still have a dumpster with a ever growing hole.

BTW-At my house we still have NOT received our food/yard waste container. I called SPU about that last week too and was told to expect it by the end of this week. I was also told that SPU won’t start billing for food/yard waste till next month. I should have thought to ask though, if next month bill is for this months service?

At One Community Commons, 35th and Morgan St., garbage was not picked up for 15 days. This is a 36-unit project; people were forced to leave there garbage whereever they could, including at the entryway to the elevator. This quickly becomes a serious health hazard, not to mention an intolerable mess. I almost called the city’s Department of Health to email them pictures of the decadant conditions.

I am also still waiting for my food/yard waste container and have been billed for the service. I called on 3/20 and was told a cart should have been delivered, they would order one for me. Called again two weeks later, and was told that I was under exempt status so the order for the can did not go through. That person would place another order for the cart to be delivered in 5 -10 business days. If I were exempt, then why was I billed? It has been a week and a half since the last call and still have not seen the food/waste cart. Also it looks like today the garbage on my side of the street has not been picked up, but it been picked up across the street.

Sorry, comment time is over.
