West Seattle Christmas 2008: Finding coffee

**NOTE – AS OF 1 PM MOST OF THIS IS LIKELY A MOOT POINT, SINCE MOST THAT WERE OPEN JUST OPENED FOR THE MORNING**

johnny_automatic_christmas_wreath.jpgThe past two Christmases, we’ve compiled this list in advance, both by phone and by driving around to check what’s posted. This year – forgive our lameness; we’ve been a little busy, AND the weather has rendered advance plans subject to change, anyway. So here’s the next best thing: We’re listing the ones that just MIGHT be open, based on past holidays, and we looked up their numbers. We’ll make calls when we’re up and update with whatever we discover; if you call anyone to check before that, please post what you found out.

CONFIRMED AS OPEN (updated 10:44 am with WSB’er reports – thank you!)
Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor), 8 am to (approximately) 1 pm
Morgan Junction Starbucks
Morgan Junction Tully’s

CALL AND CHECK (10:51 am note – we have dropped some off the list after calling and getting no answer)

Alki Starbucks 206-933-6974
Alki Tully’s 206-938-0732
Bird on a Wire 206-932-1143

Lame? Not so! You are the clearly the best and most up-to-date, vibrant source of information for anyone living in or close to West Seattle. You have enriched our lives and drawn us closer together as a community. Many thanks for all your hard work.

  • Darren December 25, 2008 (6:53 am)

Merry Christmas! We are returning from the East Coast tonight and will be coming home from the airport via taxi with our toddler…could someone please let us know if it’s possible to get up to Pigeon Point either via Andover or Genesee? Thanks, and we hope everyone has managed to keep up good spririts through a snowy mess!

I want to make a motion that the above sentiments express the will and gratitude of the entire West Seattle community. Hearing no objection, the motion passes, unanimously!

Lame is the last thing I would call your incredible coverage for the past week plus. Thank you so much for making this community a better place.

  • dc December 25, 2008 (8:21 am)

Morgan Junction Starbucks and Tully’s are open.
    C&P Coffee – not open

  • Linda H December 25, 2008 (8:29 am)

  • miws December 25, 2008 (8:30 am)

Eric B pretty much expresses my feelings. (Which I had expressed in my own post, and submitted, and then my browser wacked out on me!)

    .

Anyhow, Merry Christmas to the WSB Staff!

    .

Merry Christmas to everybody at WSB HQ.

We truly appreciate all that you do.

  • flowerpetal December 25, 2008 (9:39 am)

Starbucks in Westwood seems to be closed… there is no answer on the phone.

  • Jo December 25, 2008 (9:42 am)

And, folks, let’s show our appreciation for TR, Patrick and JMoT, but tipping something into the tip jar (shown on right hand side, beneath sponsor logos, blue box with SUPPORT WSB).
We need to make sure they NEVER go away!
    Happy holidays to all!

Merry Christmas TR, Patrick, and Jr Member – here’s hoping you don’t read these until noon – back a-way from the computer ;)

    You’re the best!

  • P December 25, 2008 (10:17 am)

and lets not forget the wonderful maps Alice did for us while she was stuck and couldn’t make it in to work! Those rocked!

  • KJBC December 25, 2008 (10:18 am)

Merry Christmas WSB – you guys deserve a quiet and happy holiday. Take some time and enjoy!

  • Mary December 25, 2008 (10:28 am)

Merry Christmas to WSB! You were the shining star that helped keep us together as a community while we all battled the snow and road conditions.

And a special thanks to Alice for her maps!

WSB is the “best practices” model of what community-based journalism can be.

  • Celeste17 December 25, 2008 (10:29 am)

Merry Christmas to all three of you. May all your wishes for 2009 come true.

  • TWAR December 25, 2008 (10:37 am)

Merry Christmas and thank you to WSB for all the info. Thought you may like to know that the large road grader style snowplows are on California ave. and they do not have rubber blades. They are scraping down to the concrete. Best Christmas gift ever. Clear roads

  • WSB December 25, 2008 (10:47 am)

Thanks very much for the kind wishes, and for the coffee reports (and other reports) – we really are serious about 24/7/365 (this year, 366) so while we will be a little less intense about it today (and did slack off somewhat last night), if something major happens, it’ll be here. We’re probably going out on a coffee run ourselves shortly! Hope you’re having a merry Christmas Day – TR

  • Babs December 25, 2008 (10:54 am)

I raise my glass to WSB for their blog – it unites Seattle largest neighborhood (and best one in my eyes) via a “backyard across the fence” tech dialog covering the big to small events and everything in between! Cheers to all! :)

  • FabulousEm December 25, 2008 (10:57 am)

The Safeway on Roxbury is open until 3 today. There is a Starbucks kiosk inside. Say hello to Melissa, she’s about the sweetest person I’ve met working at a Safeway.

  • Sue December 25, 2008 (11:06 am)

Thanks to Hotwire for being open today, and for my lovely husband who braved the 1 mile round trip walk to bring me a bacon mocha!
    .
And thanks to all in WSB land for all their contributions, and most importantly to TR & Patrick for making all of this possible.

  • m December 25, 2008 (11:17 am)

I stayed in Bellevue last night and expected SBUX to be open over here this morning- no luck!! I drove to three of them in search of strong brew (my mothers coffee is as light as tea).

  • P December 25, 2008 (11:30 am)

Sue, what is a Bacon Mocha????

  • 22blades December 25, 2008 (12:01 pm)

Thank You to WSB! I’m just sorry I didn’t find you guys earlier…

  • Brandon December 25, 2008 (12:02 pm)

Lame is having these people open and working on Christmas. Some days are just sacred. Whether you celebrate the holiday or not, having one day off with friends and family should be mandatory for just one day. I think we can live without convenience just once.

    Happy Holidays to all,

  • JH December 25, 2008 (12:13 pm)

P, I was just about to post that!

  • JH December 25, 2008 (12:14 pm)

Oh, and Merry Christmas to WSB! You have kept me greatly entertained when I’ve been snowbound, enjoying federal snow days, with two broken TVs due to a power surge and not much to do. Thank you!

  • MAS December 25, 2008 (12:15 pm)

A bacon mocha is where they substitute bacon fat for milk. Mmmmmmm

  • Sue December 25, 2008 (12:16 pm)

P, I’m not quite sure *what* they put in the bacon mocha – I saw it listed on the holiday drink list at Hotwire and had my husband pick it up. Smells very strongly of bacon. Tastes like it too. Just finished it and still trying to decide if I liked it or not. LOL! I think the technical name was “bacon wrapped mocha”

  • epl December 25, 2008 (12:21 pm)

    howie in seattle. Ditto! :O)

  • Orin December 25, 2008 (12:25 pm)

    Alki Tully’s is open.

  • FabulousEm December 25, 2008 (12:26 pm)

I’m not trying to be the Safeway spokes person here, but all the Safeways are open until 3, including the ones in Bellevue. So “M”, not sure which part of Bellevue you are in, but I know the new downtown Safeway has a Starbucks as does the one on 140th and Bell-Red. Good luck. I hate crappy coffee.

  • Preggo December 25, 2008 (12:30 pm)

Many thanks, WSB, for providing a place to help keep my sanity and see what’s doing in the ‘hood during Whiteout ’08. Don’t know what I would have done without the road condition info, the helpful tips, and the news…you blew away all the competition.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

  • zero-to-life in West Seattle December 25, 2008 (12:35 pm)

I’ll bet they use that “bacon salt”…It is made locally! It really is good, but I think I prefer it in my clam chowder! Their website is (you guessed it!) http://www.baconsalt.com

  • Sue December 25, 2008 (1:09 pm)

Brandon, in the case of Hotwire, it’s the actual owner who’s working today – she does not require her employees to work that day. If every coffee shop was closed for Christmas (and/or any other holiday), I would not be upset in the least. But if one goes out the way to open, I don’t mind patronizing it, especially when Hotwire is a WSB sponsor (and the first one, I believe).

  • Antknee December 25, 2008 (1:27 pm)

Just as a heads up, nothing in Westwood Village is open today. I don’t know about 24 hour Fitness though. I attempted to find something in terms of coffee or food to no avail. Fortunately Safeway is open and bustling with people.

  • WSB December 25, 2008 (1:27 pm)

Owner Lora and her daughter, in fact. Probably the merriest place in town today. Few other places open that we could tell on our late-morning drive so I’m hoping they did good business – steady stream while we were there.

  • MargL December 25, 2008 (1:48 pm)

Yeah – Safeway is open until 3 but of you want sweet and sour chicken with fried rice from their deli you’re out of luck! Only 1/2 the deli is open – some fried chicken/burritos and all the cold salad section. :-/
Oh and only the middle section of the Safeway parking lot is cleared – so take it slow around the edges.

  • littlebrowndog December 25, 2008 (1:55 pm)

Took the dogs for a walk at Alki—very large patches of green grass visible!

  • add December 25, 2008 (1:55 pm)

I echo all the sentiments above (except for the ones about bacon-flavored mochas, yuck!) – WSB, you’re the BEST. I’ve enjoyed your coverage and community-building for two years now! All the best for continued success. Happy Christmas!

  • add December 25, 2008 (1:56 pm)

Oh – and it’s snowing pretty hard on Gatewood Hill – big chunky flakes.

  • Sarah December 25, 2008 (2:13 pm)

Brandon – I agree with you re: stores being open today if the employees don’t want to work. Some, though, only schedule for Christmas on a volunteer basis. I worked at Starbucks a few years back, and they would not schedule employees unless they specifically had said they wanted to work on Christmas. Some people would, because the tips from that day were amazing. Crowds, however, were horrible!

  • Diane December 25, 2008 (5:35 pm)

Brandon, many many many folks do not have friends/family to spend xmas with; so having any place to go to not be alone, to meet up with others who have no place to go, or to at least see, perhaps connect with others who do not celebrate this particular holiday, is an absolute refuge
    ~
I would have been thrilled to work on xmas, to greet/welcome all those who also have no place to go on this day
    ~
I was bold/desperate enough to post “xmas orphan” on the forum, asking for invite to dinner with anyone; one very kind woman responded and invited me to her home; then today the “metro gets you no where” canceled the only bus that could have taken me to her house; and my car has now been buried for 12 days, so I had no way to get there

  • jeannie December 25, 2008 (6:14 pm)

Diane, I thought it was cool that you reached out with your “Xmas orphan” post, and very kind of the other West Seattle-ite to invite you over. I am sorry to hear that the buses weren’t working. Hopefully, you’ll be able to get out and about in the next few days.

Sorry, comment time is over.
